Does anyone know for SURE whether you need a visa even to transit (less than 12 hours) in Bangkok if you are flying through fromt he us to Nepal?

I know the following for sure (as of about 2 months ago, and I doubt it would have changed so rapidly): If your transit time is less than 12 hours, and you are staying inside the airport (not exiting through immigration) then you do NOT need a transit visa. If it is an overnight transit, such as connecting from the NW or UA night arrival to the Thai flight to Kathmandu the next morning, you can even find a transit hotel that rents you an okay room for about $30ish per 4 hour stretch (slighlty less if you are willing to go to the bank nextdoor to exchange $$ for Thai baht). Expensive in Nepali terms, as well as compared to hotels outside the airport, but sure helpful to sleep flat even for 4 hours after the long travels. Gets you into KTM and through immigration there in a much better mood to have slept deeply for a moment and showered... The transit hotel is called "Louis Tavern Day Rooms" there is one in Terminal 1 lower level, near the Thai Airways transfer desk, and one in Terminal 2 top level, up the escalator, next to the Northwest lounge. If you need confirmation, try calling Thai Airways in Los Angeles, or a Thai embassy or consulate. If you wish to go stay at a hotel outside, then you do need a visa. The cost for the transit visa is about $ 15 per entry (if you get it in the US, Rs. 450 in Nepal), plus the cost of sending your passport to the embassy or consulate and back, plus price of taxi (unless you stay at the Amari across the street from the airport for $150 a night!).... so you end up no cheaper than at the transit hotel.... A transit visa allows you to stay upto 30 days. A tourist visa allows you to stay 60 days. They are both fairly simple to get from Thai consulates around the US... at least simple compared to getting European visas, or to getting a US visa in Nepal... Happy travels!

Nepalis don't need even passport, that country is India. Nepalis can get visa at arrival, that country is Singapore. No where else. Don't think of getting visa at arrival in any other country, if you are genuinely interested to get visa and exit the country. Trying is different thing, but, rules are getting stricter. Immigration officer won't risk themselves, giving a visa to you, unless you make them rich enough, and leave the job next day. When ministers involve in sending Nepalis by getting visas preplanned for illegal purpose, what can we do. Do you remember the 25 "sportsman" smuggling stuffs by Jhale male amale party when they had government last time. Because of their misuse, we are suffering.

Nepalis need visa for India if you are not entering from Nepal. Philippines also provides on-arrival visa for Nepali passport holder. I have entered Philippines couple of times without a visa. But I am a little bit confused becasue Nepalis usually apply for Philippines visa if they are coming from Nepal.

Well, Arnico pretty much covered all the facts but let me add a few more "related" things. As of June, Nepalis did require visas for Thailand which needed to be obtained prior to arrival. You DO NOT need a visa to stay inside the airport. You can book rooms at the transit hotel for 4,6, or 8 hour blocks and I think it cost me around $33 for 4 hours, pretty expensive but a nice way to kill some of the exhaustion if you are flying from the US. You can call the Thai Airways office to book a room, or ask someone in Kathmandu to call the Thai office there to do so. Be advised that if you want to stay in Amari you DO need a visa, and it is pretty expensive anyway. You can get much cheaper hotels outside the airport and some even provide free transportation and/or breakfast but remember the time you spend clearing entry and exit formalities as well as traveling to and from the hotel. Also you need to pay a departure tax of 500 Bahts (about $12) as you come back to the airport. On another note, if you are coming back from Kathmandu and have a long transit, you can take a guided tour of Bangkok. Once again you do need a visa for that and it (the tour) is quite expensive. Several different tours with lengths of 4-6 hours are available depending on your time of arrival and cost around $40-50 per person (slightly less if you have more than one person). You travel with a guide in an AC (or rather an ice box) van. A good way to kill some time if you have a long transit though not a pocket friendly option. Also, may not be a good option if your carry-on is heavy. You don't need to pay the departure tax if you are taking the tour. You can book the tour at the desk near the Thai Airways transfer desk. Bon voyage.

Thank you guys, especially Arnico and Chipledhunga for the excellent information. I hope you all are right. My transit time, I realize is just over 12 hours, I hope that will not change things too much. It is a long story, folks!! Thank you and please wish me luck!! Looks like I will need it! :)
