This thread is targetted at Nepalis within easy travel distance of Boston: The GREATER BOSTON NEPALI COMMUNITY. (To all others, please accept our apologies and skip to fun reading elsewhere...unless of course, you are interested in what we do here...). The new GBNC council had its first meeting today. As usual, we discussed what kinds of events we would like to organize over the coming year, from the usual New Year's and Dassain party to momo parties, a ski trip, carrom competition, perhaps a picnic in the summer... and we brainstormed about other possibilities. However, we really need community input. WHAT KINDS OF EVENTS WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE GBNC HOST? And, WHAT KINDS OF EVENTS WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO HELP ORGANIZE? We have in the past been criticized for catering too much to the needs of students and professionals, and not enough to families, kids, restaurant workers, and other groups. We need your input as well as your help to be able to organize effective events. We would like to hear both about events that you think would appeal to a wide range of the Boston community, as well as events targetted at smaller groups of 40-50 people... We also brainstormed briefly about the wider mission of GBNC, both in rendering services to the Nepali community here, and in contributing to public service work in Nepal. Here again, we would like to hear your input. Let this thread be a lively discussion of what you would like to see over the coming year... keeping in mind of course that not everything discussed here is likely to take place, that there are limits to what council members can do (but we can support efforts by non-council members to organize events as well!), and that there are limits to how many events we can organize that involve upfront outlay of gbnc funds, or that are not expected to generate net income. That said, let's hear from the community. If you attend GBNC events, please join and write in this thread even if you are not used to writing in kurakani on a regular basis. If you only read, but don't write, now's the time to register. We need to hear what you would like to attend. Arnico (on behalf of President Pradeep Paudyal and the rest of the new GBNC council).

Good morning Boston! We'd like your feedback, or even better, a discussion here. (The thread seems to have gotten pushed onto the second page overnight)

There is a small but very creative group of young people here in Nepal that are making extraordinarily powerful documentaries on social and cultural issues within the Nepali context and beyond. I noticed while I was in Cambridge, MA and after returning to my work station away from Boston, GBNC does make a great effort to promote Nepali movies. However, why do we not also try to provide exposure to young Nepali documentary producers that do extraordinary work for very little money and a lot of, often times, undeserved criticism. These are my personal views and I am hopeful that there will be interest among Boston's Nepali community to enjoy Nepal's digital art and at the same time help build/promote/develop indigenous Nepali talent.

How about having more gatherings ? Instead of this 2-3 times a year make it 5-6 times a year. We can have momo parties, or just social events for people to do things. That way we would have more of a communal feeling. Unlike this 2-3 times a year where everyone feels like a stranger. The more you get people involved in the community, the more help you will get as well.

Some Suggestions for Events: 1. Decrease the entrance fee for parties (Dashain, New Year, momo etc.) Try to offset the costs from other means such as Bingo, Cash Bar(might be a problem in School's hall), Juke Box (charge for songs dedication: target young girls/boys/singleslooking) etc.. Sales of nepali achaars(maasu ko achaar, teel ko achaar, moola ko achaar ummmmmmmm). Home-made pickles will surely taste better than those Indian pasal ko. Our didi's can make some side money and so will GBNC. 2. Try for less of stage events (dance, songs). Have an impromptu musical sessions, like Nepali songs' antakshari, lok geets on just maadal and damfu, let the guests participate on these. 3. Karaoke sessions.
