I think Ranas are still considered "Chettris" although there has been a long tradition of marriage between the Ranas and Thakuris and vice-versa.

Yeah, Ranas are technically "Chettris" by caste, but their subcaste is higher. They are Thakuris, or course. They are of Rajput origin, supposedly. What's Padey and Kunwar?

Caste system certainly shouldn't matter in this modern world. But to set the record straight(for anthropologist?) I am adding few more words. Poonte's list is correct except for Hamals. I think they are more chhetris than Thakuri. A little Brahmin influence should also be mentioned. Ranas are not thakuri, although Rana-Thakuri marriage is common. If you retrace back to the History, Ranas, the descendents of Jung Bahadur were first Kunwar who are Chhettris. The marriage became common after Jung Bahadur's effort to mingle into mainstream royal family. I think Mallas are thakuri, but these are the Thakuris subcastes that I can guarantee: Shah, Khand, Singh, Chand, Sen thakuri.

I agree with DWI on the anthropological note on Ranas. Hamals are both chhetris and bahuns. Mallas are also Newars. Shahs come from the Parsee. Rana of mongolian and chhetri mix. NONE of the above are of Rajput origin. Only Singhs, Kunwars. Don't know of Chands and Khands. :)

Right on Sakshi. I heard few Shahs belonged to Rajput royal familly origin.

When a Bhaun marries a)Thakuri or b) Chettri girl, his son's caste becomes Hamal. Rana are Chettris but they do marry Thakuris. ANd thakuris also do not hesitate to give thir daughter's to when it comes to Rana's, especially when it comes to JBR(Jang Bhdr. Rana) Rana's but they do hesitate to give thier daughter to other Chettris. Things might have changed now though.
