The John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation has awarded a grant to a small group of Nepali health and medical professionals to produce a documentary in HDTV format which will be aired across the US on PBS stations as part of the NOVA/Frontline special in the year 2003.

"Living with the Stigma of AIDS without AIDS" is the title of the documentary that was filmed in six districts of Nepal: Bellauri, Kanchanpur; Malakheti, Kailali; Magar Besi, Nawal Parasi; Letang, Morang; Chuan Danda, Tehra Thum and Lo Manthang area, Upper Mustang.

More details and other pertiment information will be available shortly at:

This documentary is being produced entirely by Nepali professionals (only the editing part is being done at the studios of WGBH in Boston) and hopefully will provide insights from the Nepali perspective. This is a collaborative effort between Nepali health and medical professionals, Center for Alternative Media at Harvard AIDS Institute and the Center for Gender Equity at University of California at San Francisco.

Harvard Dropout, thanks for sharing this information with us.

It is great to see Nepali Professionals being able to utilize their skills to produce a documentary of this nature. Kudos, to them and we should try to support such initiatives.

It would, hopefully, shed light into the whole HIV issue in Nepal. Once, I attended a talk program, where there was some statistical evidence which went on to show that, if the disease spread was uncurtailed, could grow exponentially.

Actually, the presenter, a doctor from UCSF,drew some similarities between the conditions [prevalent] in South Asia today to that of Africa 20 years ago, and how if unchecked ,this epidemic could reach serious magnitudes -as is the case in Africa today. It however, didin't potray any views from the Nepali side.

The documentary should be insightful! By the way, are some of the Nepali professionals based here ?
