Nepalis in US call King democracy protector Himalayan News Service, Kathmandu, October 24, The Foundation of Nepalese in America (FNA) has expressed "serious concern" about the "irresponsible and baseless" claim of some political parties that King Gyanendra's decision to dispose of the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government was unconstitutional. "The constitution has clearly authorised the King to dismiss an ineffective and inept government once Article 127 is invoked," the FNA said. "Moreover, Article 128 has no meaning in the present situation as it was meant to validate the government formed immediately after the implementation of the constitution." The King has full authority to take any necessary step to protect and preserve the constitution, multi-party democracy, and the interests of the Nepali people, the New York-based organisation said. "The executive powers that the King is empowered are there to be used at a moment of national crisis, external or internal threats to the nation and the people," it said. "FNA is disappointed that at a time when the country and people are embracing the decision of the King that ensures national unity, trust in the country, certain groups with vested interests are trying to create confusion and derail the nation's developmental efforts." "There never was and never will be a threat to democracy from the institution of monarchy in Nepal," said the organisation. It also referred to the tradition of the Shah dynasty to side with people's wishes and aspirations, and noted King Gyanendra's commitment to uphold constitutional monarchy and multi-party democracy. "The threat to democracy is from the rampant corruption by the political parties who took turns to come to power," said the organisation. "The musical chair played out by the so-called people's leaders was disgusting. Politics was reduced to winning elections to grab power." After the jana andolan of 1990, Nepal has witnessed many political upheavals created by various political parties with the sole intention of grabbing power, it said. "Now it is the Maoists' turn to attempt to mislead people with false promises. Our leaders have wasted valuable time and resources of a developing nation that has a lot of catching up to do, to join the developed nations' ranks. Political bickering, differences, and petty self interest will only hurt us all in the long run," it said.
