Kyaa topic chanya Hamjaayega le.
As far as I know, When I was "bharabhure", there was one tibetian Momo pashal in kalimati. Kya khatara. I still have a picture of that place in my mind. And, I still know exactly where it was located. They had Best 10 pieces with punch-in-a-nose "golveda ko achar" and Van-Damme-hammar-kick soup. They had Killer MOMO, For me thats where the word momo came from when my Mama (mummy ko bhai) ordered, "dedh plate MOMO".
But there WAS no momo like kathmandu ko momo. Almost 15(couple of years give and take) years ago, Dashain ko brand new over-sized "shorts" naito samma tandai, mama sanga cycle ma gayera kunni kaha ho (almost 5(???) talle ghar, i think, and there were ankhijhyalz), Til ko achar sanga kha ko peero peero Kathmandu ko killer momo... Where is that taste gone???
Kalimati ko kalcha ko ek-dhoke momo, when kalcha, an innocent Kirtipurian who didn't even know how to make a profit from momo, opened a small momo store. Khali ek dhoka kholya hunthyo, dhoka bhitra kalcha ra kalcha ko partner momo mujja mujja parthyo. Khaali raati matrai paaune, dinbhari napaaune. Ek plate haanyo pachi tiri-miri-jhyai. Where did kalcha's innocence go? There is no way one can find the same taste from kalchas momo these days. Kalcha learned business.
Anybody remember that small galli near Ranjana hall, right next to "SODA" store??? (yes the one Deep jyu mentioned in one of his great postings). "Koopaan momo". You had to buy coupon and wait for the next momo for almost half and hour. (thuk nildai). That was the place even brahman couldn't resist. >>> corner ma puret baaje, anuhar lukaayera ek plate bhatta bhat handai, I remember my mama spotted him... "baaje, tyo ta thulo khashi ho ni."... "Huna ta ho tara ashaaadhyai mitho cha, kahile kaahi khaye kehi hunna...., ghar gayera swasti santi garaula....(baaje is always right)"
And that TIL KO ACHAR... shhhhhhhhh!!!!!! I don't think that place is there anymore.
And what about KATHMANDU GANESHTHAN, kastamandap ko muntira, Dabali ko mastira, paat ma dine guchche momo? Raati raati matrai bechthyo, guchcha jatro momo... momo khayo pachi tin bhuvan chaudha lok dekhine. Jaw breaker. After you got the momo in "salla ko paat", you were supposed to say " sauji, ghiu khoi ta", and sauji would pour "ghyu" on the top of momo... Another killer momo.
There is no momo like kathmandu ko newari momo (no i am not newar). I don't know where the word momo came from, but I know, those classic kathmandu momo adhdha, taught me about the word momo. "MOMOCHA" to be precise. Sauji le haat ma churot lidai 10 wota ganera haleko momo. To me, thats where the word momo came from. And why would i care anything before that?
I used to think, momocha is non-veg, and samosa is veg. so momocha-samocha got it?
NO?

Kalankisthan: I think its up to each person to like or not like masala bhareyko ma:mas OR plain adhuwa haley ko momos. I have eaten GREAT ma:mas in ktm and momos in Darjeeling and I have eaten the worst in both places! I think it all boils down to what one has been used to! SO, there is no BEST momos here and BEST ma:mas there.
But to give credit to your posting, I will have to say that IF a person knows how to make ma:mas, those are just great! ghiu haleyko chai, no thanks. That sounds like momos for kaiyas :).

I also know that Ghiu MOMO . I never tried it but my frens enjoyed it a lot and talked highly about it.. They used to tell me that the source of the GHIU was no other than the Sauji's Ghiu.
The reason the MOMO was not available during the day was because the Sauji had to work hard to collect his Ghiu for the EVENING business in the morning, when he was fresh. There was a rumor that his wife had left him, for him not wanting to waste his GHIU on her each night.
He often went to his sons and nephews , when he was not able to get the amount he needed. Many a times he even went down to Paropakar and got ghiu from the Thelagada Vendors too. SO no wonder people enjoyed the MOMO .

sorry to hear that you have no place to eat such items..here in london, me and friends have located a bhhati..yes just like the ones from nepal selling most things. mom, chhoila, bhutuwa etc. but the shame thing is i have stopped eating meat but i have no worries, for they have great chiwura, bhatmas, aloo ko achar, dal and bhat etc.
as for the word mom, well it will have to be from indrachok near asan. there used to be a couple, old in terms of nepali life expentancy, ten momocha in paat served in the freshest and greatest sauce. shame those thins are rare to locate in nepal these..

Ye paapi doosta hamjayega, kasto thread suru gareko hau? Alikati manavta bhanne ta hunu parcha ni. Like DWI said, yaha momo ta ke rango samet barsau samma nadekhne dherai chan. Yesai ta chatpat bhaeko bela yesto thread suru gare pachi mukh ma paani ayo, keyboard hanna aula chatpatae. Sarai torture garyo baa yo manche le ta.
Gangri ko momo bhaneko kaha nira ho? Sounds like somewhere in the Kalimati or Kalanki area. Teku ko Suimai chahi khub man parthyo, char wota pwaal ma char thari achaar halera.
Sabai le tyo Everest, Everest momo bhanthay, tyo thau ma chahi jyaan gae janna. US kai ek jana sathi le bhanthyo, tyaha ta gainas bhane talai paap lagcha bhanera. La jaa ta gaidiu bhanera gaeko. They had an interesting token system. Problem paryo paani ko. Nothing to drink othern than tyo kaalo na kaalo and greasy looking jug ko paani,ajha paani kasto thiyo kunni. After a few momos, had to rush to a cold store.
Dharan ko momo ko swaadai arko pheri. Ek plate ma jamma 4 wota but thulo thulo. It was supposedly a pretty famous place. Forgot whether it was Chata Chowk or Bhanu Chowk but it was right across the street from the famous Keshar Pustak Pasal.
The most interesting momo was the cheese and tuna momo I had at the Machapuchchre Base Camp.
Yaha chahi once in a few months turkey ra sungur ko masu misaera wonton wrapper ma halera momo banaincha. Ke garne yestia cha birano thau ko jindagi.

momo pani wrapper ma?...that is aati.. momo ko dough banaya kati ramro hunchha.. it takes you about five mins to transform the flour..usually plain with water, added slowly(from what i am used to) to a lovely pastry.. take a chunk of this and roll it out.. take a circular shape usually a cup or glass and you have about 15 to 20 momos..steam and make achar.. usually process takes about 20 mins..but if you have people the better as all can chuck in....can be a great night with a guiter and some drinks to give it that professional touch...

Tyahi bhanya Chipledhunga. Tara Everest ko momo used to be best 5 years back, even with that dirty water. Here is my list of best places to eat in Kathmandu Ghetto (excluding those namebrand restaurants), these were existent 5 years back. Some are gone by now:
1. Everest Momo
2. Airport Shekuwa
3. New Road Samosa
4. New Road 'Baath', meat item..I still don't know what they are.
5. Dilli Bazaar Momo.
Any other that u guys/girls think of? From past and present? This is the best way to take the revenge from those people who got Visa to come to america, instead of 'You.' Don't include Nirulas, Wimpy, Nanglo, T-house etc.

Kathmandu/Patan ko:
Famous Momo, New Road, Pipalbot. Good buff chilly and momos.
CP, New Road Pipalbot (adjacent to Famous Momo) Good kothays.
Sekuwa pasals of Putalisadak
Mirage,Jamal. Buff chilly ra spring rolls
Valley Sweets, Ratnapark. This may not exactly fit in the momo thread but I used to love the mixed chat. Huna ta Ranipokhari ko paani sidhai taanera chalaucha bhanne halla thiyo, taipani khana gainthyo. Ahile ta Ratnapark ma sabai bhatkaeko cha. Does anyone know where this place has been relocated?
Taleju Restaurant, Mangalbazaar. Nice place to hangout in the Japanese Room (tyo Japanese style ko hocho table haru bhaeko kotha)
Diva's Delight, Dharmapath. Good C-momos if you like twaakka piro.
Aroma ko rooftop, Jamal.
A Newari restaurant (forgot the name) at Jhochchen, the same building houses a cyber cafe. Excellent gidi pakoda, jibro fry, pitho bhareko fokso, duck choela, etc.
Gangri,Teku ko suimai momo :)
Pokhara:
Lemon Tree. sekuwa ra momo ko laagi
Elegant View. chicken chilly. Not sure if this still exists.
Maya's Restaurant. yaha ko pani mitho cha chicken chilly. A great place for "after the trek dinner."

when i was kid i had lots of Hamburger(??) from CP. It was so tasty (better than whimpy and what not). That burger used to come with some fried aalu. that aaalu was "kasam paida karne waleki" best aalu ive ever had in my life. Famous restaurant was so so. But there was one tibetian restaurant somewhere on the way from kalimati to kshetrapati(yes) ... they had the best thukpa. Ani kastamandap wari pari (i forgot the name of the place), newari restaurant, dari ma basyo, carlsberg ra bhatas, chiura ani chwela kachila haanyo... kyaa sexy

Yeah. Cheddup even took the band on a trip to Australia to attend a Jazz Festival somewhere near Melbourne, I think and got rave reviews. FYI, he's from Darj ni ho. He's got some paintings and posters there as well as board games like Scrabble, Clue, Chess..etc to keep yourself entertained while waiting for your food. :)

Cheddup? Chedup ko ta pura family nai chinchu ni tara what about the band. Cheddup ko parents are probably from Mirik but he is an out and out kathmanduite :).

I don't the name of the ppl in the Band. Yeah, Cheddup spent most of his life in Kathmandu....he used to attend St.Xavier's at one time. BUt, I think they ( band members) also have some connection or the other with Darj.

chipledhunga, no i am in the uk and have been for very long time, since primary school. all family still in nepal..if you love momo so much then alchhi bhayo bhanay momo ko pyass kasari bhaaranay. by the way to all thank you for the places you are mentioning, i will go and try next time i am in nepal.. locals will be perferred
