Talking about Mahendra Shakya receving a GoDaWa, I started thinking about the good ole days at Godavari. Remember Limbu Sir telling Hobbit stories Shelf-Miss and her Bible stories Murali trying to act cool ala Dirty Harry " Clint Eastwood" Wry Humor of Lama Sir Dowing and his "Do what you are Doing".....living in the Bungalow Trying to get double-stripe in swimming Stealing food from Father's Dining Hall as well as Plums at Midnight Kim and Midnight....the Tibetan Mastiffs Master and his.."Chilllo Rotis"...at breakfast Bro. Karpinski.."Adda Boy"....making periscope and stuff in woodworking, giving out stamps and christmas cards Fr. Moran.."Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mouse"..HAM radio Bro. Subod.....morals class with Kanchi Maya and Pookche Prasad stories...his emmaculate gardens Pulchowki Day....racing to the top Tense Rivalry between Godavari Boys and Jawalakhel boys when they came for spelling contest and football match. Fr. Coyne and his strict military disciplining style..." Hathi" Finally getting to use the solar heaters to take a shower when you get to 5th standard Phew, those were the days!!!!

And whatever happened to evergreen Jhamke...he sometimes acted like he was vice-principal. But, he had a good heart, though. I used to be so glad when my folks came to visit me, which meant some goodies to relish for a few days. After the finals in early December, couldn't wait to get out of there for about 2 months or so. Waiting by the handball courts for your folks to pick you up was something else.

dirk, thanx for reviving platinum years of my life.......like kkm said, i am ready to trade anything to go back to those years in that serene mileu! brings back long faded memories.. one of the funniest things bout godavari was no doubt the DONKEY STICK!! eheh going around finding ppl talking in nepali..and seeing donkey stick we used to start our own versions.........dipesh, By nepali paragraph ok ( he nods the head)..eheh we could do that and get around donkey stick! once in bungalow, one of my friend was so tired of getting his number in there, he flushed the stick down the loo..........ooo......what a mystery episode we had.. godavari rocks..........there's nothing even close to those years ! thanx to dirk once again! oys

kkm, no problem, you can use them in your website! That crazy Sahadev was always trying sell some orchid to the parents or guardians when they came to visit their loved ones on Saturdays. How about Tuck Shop that little enclosement by the Teacher's Dining Room where Bro. Karpinski used to see us some sweets and stuff.....which got deducted from the balance we kept with him. One of my best teachers, Gurung Miss, 2nd STD teacher, passed away a few years ago due to cancer. She was a gem of a person. Going on a walk on Saturdays was fun, mostly. I once when I was in the 3rd STD slipped and fell into the Panch-dhara.

Oys bro, 'dante akar'? hmmm interesting hijje. other memories include: - Me and a friend had not received double stripes and Thursdays were extremely hard since Murali or Sudhir would throw us in the pool. So every thursday we got signed into the Sick Room - best part was at dinner when they served us the delicious Beans tarkari... - Pencils Dropped: Fr Downing really didn't like the sound of pencils being dropped. He used to count the number of pencils being dropped - getting redder at each increment of that number. One fine day, as he turned around in slow motion, he saw in slow motion this unlucky fellow who was dropping his pencil intentionally with a big smile on his face. Suddenly, his smile disappeared as his eyes met with Fr. Downings. There was a loud yell "TEN PENCILS DROPPED" - his parents were called and he was sent home for good...

I couldn't hold back from contributing a few lines on this thread...it really did drive me back to those good old days. Dirk, Jhamke has retired from service around five years back and now runs a shop near his house at Godavari itself. I still remember how he helped guys cut their nails while waiting for their parents near the main entrance on visiting days. Do any of you still recall the "Panchayat Work" on Tuesdays where classes 5 and 6 got the chance to go out of the school premises in groups to help the villagers...Then we were supposed to hold Panchayat Meetings and present a report during the school assembly. I wonder wot they started terming that social work after the restoration of democracy... The old Saarki Dai also retired from service and was honored for his work during the 50 Years Celebrations. BTW, teachers who have recently died, as far as I can recall, are Monika Miss (Shelf Miss & Amar Sir's wife), Subba Sir (the school accountant & husband of another shelf miss). I met Limbu sir around five months back and he still has those wonderful butterfly collection.

Well, do you guys know that the Godavari School now has: a) been made a co-ed high school. b) been made a 'local' school - in that a majority of its present students come -- NOT from the middle- to upper-class echelons of Kathmandu society but -- from areas surrounding Godavari, thus making the school the only one in Nepal which started out a as a relatively exclusive school in 1951 and is now accessible to all. Talk about democratization. Though I remained a Jawalakhel boy, I too taught, very briefly, at Godavari for a couple of months in the late '80s. Struck up friendships with people like Gyan Lal, Jiwan Singh, Bijay Rai et al. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Which reminds me, guys: Please UPDATE your contact addressses by sening an email to Sangita Mahat at GAA at info@gaa.com.np. You won't get junk emails from her, just regular updates on what's happening at the schools (Godavari and Jawalakhel), at the GAA and who's doing what (just routine alumni gossip). For better or worse - as I have been finding out -- an STX network IS an amazingly powerful network to have in Kathmandu, if you want to get anything done in/for Nepal's nascent private sector (trading firms, computers travel and tourism etc), the thriving development or bikasay sector and even the media sector (TV, radio and newspapers). Sadly, there's no one in politics yet, though Achyut Gautam had had his run when his kaka Bamdev was a bigwig. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Danny was already in the British Army and came to St. Xavier's on his breaks where as Thaila (Prasad Thapa) came to Godavari for a year after his Sr.Cambridge (in 1975) and went to join the British Army.... Talking about Danny sir and boxing: we started a boxing club in Jawlakhel at one time when he was visiting. One day after I gave Dhanendra Shah (Dhane) a bloody nose, he wanted to box with me. There wan't much of a boxing between us; I remember clearly getting a bloody nose in about 5 seconds.

KKM, I wus in Class 4 before graduating to Fr. Downing's Bungalow at Godavari...Unfortunately, he died before he became my class teacher. Later, we did hold "The Greatest Show on Earth" and so did the batch junior to us but then the "Hansel & Gretal" era was over from our time. In fact, as Fr. Downing had started initial practices of Hansel & Gretal for the class he was class teacher of before he died. Hence, the boys later did hold the show in their Parent's Day as a tribute to him. I still remember, the last Hansel: Sampurna Tuladhar, Gretal: Sazen Shrestha, and the witch: Ashutosh Kedia (heheh!). Hey, u guys still remember the disturbances caused by that marble quarry? I miss those hot buns during Schout Mela that used to be run by Class 6. Maan, I still wonder how come we had the guts then to skate, jumping the stairs of Gonzaga Hall and then all the way downhill from the swimming pool to the passages of classes 1,2/classes 3,4... Ditto skating all the way downhill from right below table tennis courts to the basketball court near the Bungalow. THAT WUS COURAGE!
