How to tell the difference between strong opinions and personal vitriol? One question to ask is, "Does the comment relate to opinions, or to a person?" Some posters are highly skilled in the use of English, and do walk into debates with both guns blazing. But if they're shooting at ideas, and not other posters, then it's hard to call it rude or mean. The language might just be unintentionally harsh, and if you call them on it, they'll probably be reasonable. Which brings up another kind of question to ask: "What happens when you express your feelings about a post that seemed to be directed at you?" If the poster seems to be dissing you or another person, and you react to something they DIDN'T intend—for instance, if you perceive it as rude and they didn't mean it that way--they'll have some kind of civil response. They'll say "I didn't mean it quite that way" or they'll be shocked and say "what the heck are you talking about" or something like that. And you can work it out. But if they keep on with the demeaning insults or catty comments, you have a pretty good read on their character. When we encounter a person like that, online or off, just think of it this way: would you rather have to deal with them, or would you rather BE them???

Sally, Good observation and a logical presentation, I would like to cite your saying, you permit me to do so: “One question to ask is, "Does the comment relate to opinions, or to a person?" This line reminded me one incident that was happened in Medford, MA. I was walking alone looking for the apartment building (I was new for the city), where one of my friend used to live there. I had Street # and Apt #, for the first time, I did not have doubt about finding the apartment, but I got hard time to find that out. Finally, I decided to ask to a gentleman about how far this apartment building or Apt is. He just gave me short-cut way and he told me to follow the same path and you will get the Apt. right after 5 blocks walking. I followed the direction and crossed the 5th block. I was still not getting the house (apt=apartment). Then, I was kind of worry and I asked another gentleman standing over the cross road. He said “I do not know who the hell is standing here to show the apartment.” I apologized and went to the other side; unfortunately, I did not have even 35 cents either to make a call to my friend. I said that world was beautiful. I have no idea how to categorize these two gentlemen. Amen………………

Amen……………… I do not think that someone can find any opinion rather than personally asking for help or for some idea to get into the house in this case. Now, tell me what the meaning of Rude is?
