I am surprised to see the polls at the right hand side of this message board.
A majority of people (81%) voted for "Nepalese embassy at DC is doing nothing". Well, I never had to deal with the embassy, so I voted for "I don't know."
Do you guys agree with the majority? Any good/bad experience with the embassy?
thapap Posted on 05-Nov-02 02:52 PM

never had to deal with them.

Consulate In NY is pretty good. Only time I needed to contact them was when I had to renew my Passport. My personal opinion, turn over time was pretty good. Got application form in like 2 days and received new passport in a week.

Most Nepalis don't need to deal with the Embassy unless to renew their passport and stuff like that. I don't know why the majority are saying it is not doing enough. THe main purpose of the Embassy is to laise as the representative of HMG of Nepal with US Gov't ( Dept. Of State) with regards to the bilateral ties between the two nations.

I don't know what they are looking to be done? File their DV, H-I or green-card or what?

The question itself in the Poll is flawed in my opinion. Of course they are doing work for Nepalese in US for what they are established.

But, whether they are doing a satisfactory job, an efficient job should be questioned.

So, a poll like this might be better:

How do you rate the performance of Nepalese embassey at DC?

Excellent:
Very good
good
Fair
Needs improvements
Poor

Perhaps the poll reflects the extreme negative impression given by the embassy officials to the Nepalese expatriots, even when whatever work that needed to be done were few and far between. Besides my own experience, I have heard of too many accounts of how people have been treated very unkindly and in very unprofessional manner by the clerk(s) in our Washington office.

Besides these consular duties for expats, there are many other responsibilities that an embassy should fulfill. Improving trade relations, making visa service more efficient, holding Nepal awareness programs, providing various support for the Nepalese to expand their business into North American market, etc. Our embassy has to learn from other embassies - Japanese, British, Singaporean, etc. - and do a better job, by being creative and taking initiatives to cover for where the monetary budget falls short.

In a nutshell, I have to agree with the 82% of voters who say Nepalese Embassy in Washington is doing nothing or very little, that too quite amateurishly. It boggles my mind to wonder how an institution that has been operating for so long is still so ineffective and incapable - to borrow our King's word, "assakchyam."

Careless, inefficient or What?
My only experience interacting with the embassy has been to renew my passport in the past and it has been quite an experience.First of all, calling them and trying to get a definitive answer to one's passport update is so difficult.
Secondly, I've had to deal with careless spelling mistakes in my passport. It has happended to me twice. Why can't they just print the names?.After all, lets not forget that we are being charged $ 50.00 for this service.

ARE, GYANENDRA'S CHAMCHA IS THE AMBASSADOR AND HE IS VERY VERY ARROGANT.THE REST OF THE STAFFS FAWN AND CRINGE IN FRONT OF HIM AND LICK HIS FEUDAL ARSE, BUT IN OUR PRESENCE THEY APPEAR AS LIONS.

EMBASSY AT DC !! They really have to replace that dirty flag with a new one...
SIWALIK Posted on 06-Nov-02 07:31 PM

Twice now I have had to mail them my old passport to get a new one issued. They have done a good job. Of course, the penmanship in the passport could have been better. Aagree that the embassy should be serving the needs of not only the expats, but also help promote trade and bilateral relations in a big way. I have no idea how well they are doing the job. Also heard that they do not have many staff. Anyone knows better?
