Sajhapur Telegraph Entertainment News Sajhapur Nov 08 - The movie "8 miles" has been released. Controversial rap star Eminem makes his acting debut in thus hard-edged urban drama, inspired in part by incidents from the musician's own life. Jimmy Smith (Eminem), known to his friends as Rabbit, is a young man trying to make his way out of the burned-out shell of inner-city Detroit. Rabbit's entire life has been a hard climb, and it certainly hasn't gotten any easier lately; Rabbit has just been dumped by his girlfriend, forcing him to move back in with his emotionally unstable mother, Stephanie (Kim Bassinger), and he's getting along especially poorly with Stephanie's new boyfriend. Rabbit has a factory job that's tough, demeaning, and doesn't pay especially well, and he's convinced his skills as a rapper are his only real hope at a better life. Rabbit makes music with a crew of DJ's and MC's who call themselves Three One Third, among them his close friend Future (Mekhi Phifer), but his status as a white kid making music in a predominantly African-American community and culture is extremely intimidating, and after Rabbit freezes up in the midst of an MC battle, he's convinced he's missed his chance and that he's doomed to lead a marginal life as a factory rat for the rest of his days. With the help of his friends, and his new girlfriend Alex (Brittany Murphy), Rabbit struggles to work up the courage and the confidence to take one more shot at making his dream a reality. 8 Mile was shot on location in Detroit; the name refers to 8 Mile Road, a thoroughfare along the city's perimeter which effectively separates the middle-class suburban neighborhoods from the lower-class inner-city.

Watched 8 miles yesterday. I liked the movie. The best part of the movie is ofcourse the rap competition. Its almost like our "dohari". Its really good. The story is nothing new... its like Karate kid. But the movie is good. Eminem acts pretty well. He is better than any other singer turned actor --(yes better than jonbonjovi). Good movie... watch it -- listen carefully when they rap in the movie.. its so funny. by the way, look at the critics review of the movie "femme fatal". Ive never seen two critics writer have such a opposite view about the same movie. Roger Ebert, a veteran critics gave A to the movie, and the other movie critics gave F to it. A to F??? http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&id=1808411865&cf=critic

Haven't read the review but the Ebert guy gives an A to anything under the moon. Don't believe him. I don't. Yes, 8 miles is getting rave reviews from NYTimes to our own soulfree.

There was this old movie, NavaRang. I think 8 mile's rap is more like that, war of 'chhanda' kavita, than our dohori. I am hearing oscar buzz for Eminem. Don't they give that award for 'acting'? I've heard Eminem is just presenting the real him, no acting. I think the director (& the script writer) should get the biggest credit for realizing the essence of Hip-Hop in Ghetto hoods. He is the same director who has movies like 'LA Confidential' to his credits.

Hi Friends, As expected Eminem’s acting debut in the film “8 Mile” was an instant hit with moviegoers. But few thought that the film would do as well as it actually did, bringing in $54.5 million its opening weekend, making it the fifth highest November opening weekend gross for any film in history. I thought they did an excellent job by choosing the name "8 miles", instead of mentioning EMINEM within the title. This way the movie can magnetize customers --who’re not fond of Eminem -- by its successful director’s name, or by its title. Only sad thing --I was expecting loads of music (Raps) in the movie, but it didn't come out true. However, I thought Eminem did marvelous and authentic acting in the movie, considering what his original line of work is – raping/rhyming with proof!! I greatly appriciate his talents in writing lyrics and rapping. The film has received rave reviews from critics and even skeptics have given Eminem a big “thumbs up” for his performance!! NP
