Today -- Tuesday is a Bandh in Nepal. So is tomorrow -- Wednesday. So was yesterday, Monday. It's pretty depressing, really -- sort of like being in a surreal house-arrest in one's own country. Except for a few motorcycles a few sarkari vehicles on the road, streets are empty. Shops are closed, by and large. All appoinments are cancelled. Youngsters play cricket/football on streets. Others roller-skate. Sheer boredom rules. In the last 12 years, the one and the only thing that has been institutionalized in Nepal is this depressing "chalan" of Bandhs. oohi "wondering what shall I do today . . . now that all my appointments are cancelled . . . maybe I'll read a book and enjoy the warm, November post-Tihar sunshine up on the kaushi" ashu ktm, nepal

Jayahos, Ke garne, yaar? Khattam cha jindagi. I guess I'll simply walk to the office at some point today and . . . then walk home early. These days, it gets dark by 5 pm in Kathmandu, and there are too many checkings by the Police and the Army. Re: your wishing there being a BANDHA TOO, here's an extract from an email from a friend [in the US], expressing similar sentiments: "My sympathies for the bandhs (actually, when I am feeling so overworked, I wish there were some strikes here too. I would love to just sleep, read my books and laze about. Ke garne, grass is always greener on the other side as they say." oohi "trying to enjoy the Bandhs, but I feel odd having a relatively blank day ahead of me." ashu ktm, nepal

On serious note: It was UML and other communist folks who institutionalized and turned BANDH into an essential part of democracy. Be it a decision - that does not favor them - from court or be it death of their leader, they resorted on BANDH as effective medium of advocating their voice. Although NC was upfront in opposing the BANDHS, when it was forced in opposition - it too resorted to BANDH. Keeping aside the economic consequences, are they effective medium of protest in a country like Nepal where more than 70 percent people are engaged in traditional agriculture? Does the concerned party take BANDHs as pressure? The effect, I suppose, is more on tourism, which is already in a decline, and its related business rather than other production and service related businesses (Though I donot remember the exact figure, there was some acounting done about the losses from one day BANDH!). Does the government take BANDHs as pressure on them?

There is this American woman -- a graduate student at the University of Chicago (I believe) , who's writing her PhD dissertaion on -- believe it or not -- Nepal Bandhs. She is/ will be the world's number-one authority on Nepal Bandhs. Maybe I will request her to visit sajha, and give us critical insights ito this increasingly bizarre practice called Nepal Bandhs. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Yes, Hahoo Guru, as you well know (after seeing those pictures last year), I enjoy throwing those lusciously amilo and tongue-slurping "bhogatay-parties" up on the Kaushi every November and December. The idea is: We get about 15 or so bhogatays, fresh from the baari. Lots of organges, "dahi", noon, khursani, and all other masala -- and then -- communally -- "knead' the bhogatays and suntalas in a large "baata" and serve the stuff on leaf-plates . . . with beer, Coke and so on. It's that time of the year, folks -- to enjoy "bhogatay san.dhey.ko", while enjoying the warm November sunshine of Kathmandu. AnepaliKT, when are we going to meet? Do I know Isolated Freak? I am not sure. oohi ashu ktm, nepal

The bandh sure must be effecting journalism, too. This is the second day I've scrolled the papers to see if anyone has reported that the VDC office in the village where my husband is has been destroyed by Maoists--that happened two days ago, apparently with all its stock of TB medicine and neo-natal supplies, and the neighboring VDC office was destroyed too--but instead I read that "all is peaceful" and people are happily going to market. A wave of 24 VDC destructions was reported the night BEFORE the bandh started, so let us assume there will be some "bandh roundup" after the journalists actually get to the office and file their stories. In the meantime ... instead of "all is peaceful," how about just admitting "we don't know"???

Sally, As good old Radio Nepal never tires of announcing: "All fair throughout the Kingdom." Would you expect reports on Bandh to be any better? The only consolation is that there were lots more vehicles on the street (Kamaladi, Durbar Marg, Kantipath, Naxal) area this afternoon than there were yesterday, though shops were still closed. The Bandh ends tomorrow (Wed) evening. oohi "all peaceful throughout the Kingdom :-(" ashu ktm, nepal

between my last posting and your posting, i was reading a book. I found there an interesting analogy. it used 3 or 4 new words. "RENT", "Business Profit", "economic profit", ... I struck with a line: "A firm earning zero economic profit is making as much as it could if its resources were devoted to their alternative uses". Ashu and Paschim moved to Nepal, because for them the economic profit (lets sum up the equivalent economic profit of their fame in Nepal plus their monetary profits), but, those who have better monetary profit in USA, and equivalent economic profit in Nepal is not comparable will keep on getting better RENT in USA, so they can not leave America. Bujhne lai yo analysis gahiro chha, nabujhne lai ghar pari pahiro chha. If you know entropy that we discussed long time back here, probably, entropy can explain the mechanism better. If you or any one who is in USA understands these lines, they know they can not return to Nepal. Have you ever noticed Dr. Alok Bohara, who publishes a lot of article in TKP, on turning nepal to federal system, was trying to create his rent equal in USA and Nepal, so that he can switch to Nepal. So, if you really want to return to Nepal, you should be finding ways to increase your "rent" in Nepal not less than in USA. If you can not get atleast equal rent, then, you can not return to Nepal. Well, our heart is always in Nepal, that is understandable, but, that is not creating any RENT for daily living expenses. So, we keep on dreaming returning to nepal, but, the RENT issue never let you return to nepal, because you don'T zero or +ve economic profits. ....... Well, there are vetran economists, and they must be laughing at me. I explained what I understood. Little knowledge is dangerous thing, I know it. HG

Well, Ashu is right, technology had advance so much. DHL is there to help me. The question is of who pays/sponsors the bill? Can I afford it? As an economist, Ashu knows it very well, and I understand Dream ma matrai hun sakdaina, sachikai pani huna sakcha. But, only to those who can afford the cost. Ashu, do we have any sponsors in our HFC? Let me know if any. I wish I can have the sadh.ke.bhogate prepared by you. Anyway, I am coming to Nepal by 2004 for forever till I die, so I don't have to eat only in dream. Then, I think we should make a formal request in CDO office for formal registration of HFC, so that we can serve our club members. I am serious. HG

Guru-ji, I am thrilled that a die-hard PhD engineer like yourself are FINALLY turning to the queen of social sciences (aka economics -- and I sense that all the sociologists out there are ready to pounce on me for saying that!) for insights into why we do what we do. As someone famous has remarked somewhere: "Sacrifices" made early in one's career in any form can only help one's career later, even though, in all fairness, most of us are NOT Trikal, and thus have no idea as to what we would be doing in two to four years down the line . . . oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Ashu, Thank you very much for appreciations. I am just trying to find ways to increase my RENTal values, you know what I mean. There are 4 options, that I am heading to choose one of out of three: 1. Probability and Statistics: can switch to anywhere. Gradually, I am mastering it. In Korea, it was my first paper on statistics. Well, it was completely a different mass, quite away from mother discipline. 2. Economics: I have to get an university degree. Thinking where to go? Certificate is not my aim, aim is to learn real economics and link to my current profession. Hope my knowledge in statistics will help me. 3. Management : -ditto- 4. Law: become engineered lawyer. If I don't do something in one of these 4 topics, I am not going to get good rent when I return to Nepal, so that, I can dream like Biswo ji: kunai din ma jhile Hahoo!Guru pani public figure humla. Bhogate will remain in my heart and the fotographs you sent to me last year. I had the great priviledge to know your photographs and the sadhe.ko.bhogate in the picture, rarely a fellow Sajhatis have chances to feel. HG

LOL Ashu, "All fair throughout the kingdom" is exactly what I've been thinking as I've been reading the news these past days. Seems like news reporting pretty much follows the same philosophy as craft shops in Thamel, eh? If a style works for Shop A, why not have the same exact thing in shops B, C, D, and so ad infinitum? The Thamel Philosophy transposed to news: if one style works for the weather report, why not have the same style for ALL the news? On a serious note ... one more VDC office gone, in a few minutes. It's so much easier to destroy than to build, isn't it? Ditto the bandhs. So much easier to shut down a country than build it up. Ditto democracy. So much easier to do parades and protests until "democracy" comes than to make real democracy happen. Well, eventually the destruction will stop, as it always does, and the building-up will begin. Then I guess more people will want to "rent" in the neighborhood, and those who stuck it out and saw some value in the old 'hood will see their "investment" quadruple in value. Or at least we can hope.

Went for a walk today... actually ended up riding on a rickshaw shamelessly all the way to New Road. There were a ton of folks on the roads and quite a few vehicles too. Noticed that all the private cars and even motorcycles were going around with their plates blacked off. Went to Basantapur and it was nice to see that at least the vendors there still had their fake curious for sale. Even had that lata artist with do a little sketch for me and my companions for thirty rupees.. of course the pictures looked nothing like us:) Kasthamandap, Ganesh than, Hanuman Dhoka, Taleju, Makhan... we went to Tip top samosas ko chowk, but the shop was closed! this was my second try to get some of those samosas on this trip and both times I returned empty handed and hungry!! Oh well... Anyhow, folks Nepal Bandh sucks big time... but I have enjoyed going out walking and exploring these familiar places. If it were not for the real fear of bombs and the threat of attacks in the middle of the night for those who dare break the Bandh by driving, days without cars here in the valley is not only tolerable, but quite nice. Tara the reality remains that Bandhs are forced on the people... and it is damn inconvenient for those who have to work and make a living. As for Bhogate sadhne kura, khai kosaile pani recipie ma hing ko ra bire nun ko ta kurai garena ni! what is bhogate sadheko without those two. hoina ra?! Ani speaking of bhogates.. ani keti haru timi haru pani baccha bela ma bhogate khada tyo individual cells squish garera poi kun thau bata aucha bhanne predict garthyau? :) Ashu, bholi ke gardai chau... bhetne bhaye bhana. Sitara... so nice of you... thik thak. Ani did you know that Ratna Park ko tyo titaura pasal has been demolished along with the basbari jutta bhayeko building and the chole pasal bhayeko building. They have cleared that site along Rani Pokhari. Actually it looks pretty good. Though of course I was disappointed about the titaura joint. But tyo WEAN ko titaura is not too bad… of course it can’t stand up to that killer Ratna Park ko titaura! Arko thau they have cleared is Maitighar.. they have destroyed that yellow building in the middle of the road where there used to be that motorcycle shop and travel agency and have instead installed a nice dhunge dhara, a fountain in the shape of a mandala (that is a bit weird as you can’t see the whole thing unless you are flying overhead or somehow hovering over it), and converted the rest of the space to a sort of park where kids can play with even a little knoll with a buddha math on top of it. All in all, I quite like it. Hahoo Guru ji... tapai lai dherai pachi dhekera khusi lagyo.
