Utopian, to my knowledge, unfortunately changes in regulations that took place earlier this year NO longer permit conversion of a tourist visa to a student visa in the US. You must return to your country and apply for a student visa. This is what happened to a friend of mine. However, as long as you do not overstay with the tourist visa (not that you have to clear immigration when leaving the US), it is supposedly easier to obtain another visa compared to those who have never been to the US, since you have demonstrated proof that you have exited the USA within the legally alloted period. I hope this helps.

If you arrived in the US on or after April 15, 2002 on a tourist visa, you will NOT be granted the change of status from tourist to student. If you arrived before April 15th, 2002, and you applied for an extension (on your B-1/2)AFTER April 15th, you will also NOT be able to change your status to F-1. Else, you should be alright, provided that you can produce sufficient documents to cover your expenses as a student in the US.
