Hi all, A friend of mine graduated last summer majoring in Computer Science from a reputed University in US. She is looking for some sort of help to have a job. She is a really good student and I know her very much. She does programming extremely good. Could anyone place her at a job as a programmer in any company in US? Will there be possible to get sponsored for H1-B from any company nowadays? Is there any Nepali who has got H1-B from IT or other engineering company? I really appreciate your help. She is still in much stress. Spare some words, Please. Thanks

Hi, Its good to know about a good NEPALI programmer. I know many Nepalese working in H1 visa these days -- I'm being one of them. There are many companies which will sponsor H1 for a good programmer. It would be helpful if you had mentioned about her expertism area like Java, .NET, VB .... I can help her to get a job---at least show her a way to get it. let me know if you need any help. --THUNDER--

Hold on a minute---Don't Panic--- I have had both bitter and sweet experience with visa and also work. Yes the time is bad these days especially after Sept 11th. But I would suggest her and anyone who is looking for a job the following-- 1)Search for jobs several times on internet. Check out sites such as ---I know we all have done this) i) http://www.dice.com ii) http://www.computerjobs.com iii) http://www.monster.com iv) http://www.hotjobs.com and many more... Also if you have any specific experience or talent then you should also look into such sites--Post your resumes also. 2) Yes there are Nepalese working with H1-b in IT field. Its hard to find companies who would sponsor but you can check sites like computerjobs.com where you can select different categories such as H1-b jobs... 3) There are some IT firm/companies operated or run in partnership by Nepalese. I can not just give the names because I don't know what are you good in ? I mean the which programming language are you good at? 4)If you are good in JAVA, VB, then please let me know I can tell you one place to send your resume, but I can not gaurentee it. -----If none of the above works then try to enroll for master if you haven't done so... Good Luck---- 3)

Gnbc, please post here the computer skills of your friend, that way, we have an idea what would be a suitable fit. Also, don't underestimate or overlook the importance of creating a first rate resume. This is the first contace a company has with you, and unless you can stand out on this, your chances are slim to none thereafter. Good luck, and go lets have a loot at the skill set please. You never know what the combined resources of sajhapur can dig up.

Tough time to be looking for a job+H1B visa in the US righ now. I can feel her pain, as I have been there in the H1B land, albeit in much happier times. I probably can't tell her about any specific job opportunity, but here are some suggestions from an ex-H1B. (BTW, if she is looking for IT job, why's she shy of posting on-line herself?) If she really wants to land a job and H1B in this environment, she needs to go all out and run a one-man (make that woman, sorry) campaign of updating her skills and looking for a job. If she has limited time before her status expires, it's a race against time. Skills: Most Computer Science curriculums in the US are out of touch with realities of the industry, so she probably needs to update her skills and add a few buzzwords in her resume--read books, take free trainings/tutorials on-line, take classroom courses, get certified. See job listings to find out what the buzzwords are. Sajhabasis, please help her in this regard. Job Search: Make sure her resume has a good chance of being picked up. There are sites that tell you about writing a good resume. Need a separate one in text only format. Have it reviewed professionally, or at least by people who have been working in the field and have landed jobs successfully a few times. I have helped a number of people in this regard. Without an eye-catching resume, your are far behind in the game. If you have any relevant part-time experience, position that prominently, even before your education. Most people opt for some exaggeration in describing their experience, without lying outright. Be flexible about the nature and location of the job. If you are willing to relocate anywhere, you are fishing in a larger pool. Even if you don't really mean "anywhere", you are better off saying "anywhere", you can always refuse to go to Alaska ;). Programming job is nice, but what if you get an entry level tech support job? Learn the rules of the interviewing game. Once an employer contacts you make sure you know how to deal with them. I would probably not tell them in the first or second contact that I need H1B, unless they ask me. Give them a chance to like you, then drop the bomb. Picking Targets: A key will be how she targets companies to send her resume to. My opinion is that where everybody else is fishing, she will probably go home emptyhanded. Sites like hotjobs.com, monster.com etc are fine, but everybody's there. Try to find local newspapers, or not-so-well-known companies that are still hiring, and go to their web site and submit your resume. For example most regional banks in the south are doing well despite the economy. (examples: http://www.upb.com, http://www.compassweb.com/index.cfm). One way to select your targets is to find companies that have grown revenues in 2002 despite the economy. Howdoyoudothat? Start with the Russell 3000 list of companies (try http://www.kiplinger.com/russell/2002/r3k-search.php3#customForm), On this page, specify some criteria to narrow the list (such as this year's increase in earnings > 20% AND market capitalization > 10 MM). After you click "Search" you will end up with a list of companies matching your criteria. This is your target group of companies. Pick a stock symbol and go to this company's web site. One way to find a company's web site when you know the stock symbol--go to: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dsrce%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8&q=stocks:SRCE+ type the stock symbol next to "Enter Symbol" box and click Get Profile. You will get detailed info about this company. On the left column, look for link to this company's web site and probably "Employment" page as well. On the company's site, look for job listings, or send your resume to the HR. You can bet that not a lot of people stumble upon the comapny's web site, see the job listings and apply. You need a thick skin and be able to take a lot of rejections. Good luck. And don't forget that you can always weather this gloomy storm through another stint with F1...and that economic downturns in the US are parts of regular economic cycles. Bottomline--keep trying, hang tight, and things will change sooner or later. Finally, I do have access to internal listing of jobs in a very large company. The reason I put this all the way down here is that, I am not sure I can help her much because, almost all of the jobs require some experience and would not consider H1B. If she is hoping that somebody will point her to a specific opportunity, she needs to post her, say, top 5 skills+experience on Sajha.
