Exiles are a punishment – Josef Stalin deported half a million Chechens to Siberia in the 1940s. But self-imposed exiles are worse…Milan Kundera has just finished a new novel (“Ignorance” – on émigré life of Czechs—I read a review, not the book), but across the English Channel, Naipaul mocked the very notion of exile. Exile, what exile? In the age of “cheap air fares” everybody can go home!!! I self-exiled myself from Sajhapur for 5 days (work and travel) – and boy, was that painful? I started by doing an “ego-search” – typed Paschim, and wanted to see what threads come up. You never know these days -- which pretty ladies I am being hooked up with today (private interest!), and which gentlemen are looking for what they want to see as their “truths” (public interest!)…Batauli said earlier: “bheed ma jiu jogaunu, anikaal ma biu jogaunu”…Sajha is a bheed…and it can be awkward when you are lonely in a crowd…anyway, would I even want to bother with the retorts…naahhh. I come here for fun (learning is bonus). My real life is led, and my worth earned, elsewhere. So, Hahooguru wants to know how I look like…for the only publicly disclosed photograph of the “underground” moi, check out http://www.suskera.com/sept2002/bhurtel.html; if you want other versions, email me! But Guru-ji, I give you 7/12, or B plus for your projection; and you were quite wrong about the teeth – Melbourne ki Joanna le mero chiundo ma haat rakhera, “timro je chha, ti gajjab daant baata niskane muskaan chha” bhaneki kahilai birsinna. Probably the second best compliment that a woman has ever given me. The first one was: Oi, YOU, don’t you hear me, I want to mother your child! This happened at a bar in Washington not many months ago…I seldom lie…although you do know that clever quip on fishermen, don’t you? One fisherman is telling the truth about the other when he calls him a liar! The Great Paramendra threads!!! As someone who has probably known PKB the longest here (20 years), much of this (not everything) is amusing. While I have my own views and strategies on dealing with thugs (both with low and high IQs), my general position, expressed on at least two occasions here in the past is along the lines of…personal offense, and hate, etc. against anyone, under any pretext is wrong, and just not worth it. Let us all condemn, and refrain from malice and slander…some civility and respect of the other being is always nice…but we should also accept that the perpetrator or the victims ought not over-estimate or misinterpret the “silence” of face-less, unbound, non-committal posters here. Names, real or otherwise, mean little to me on this virtual board. Who cares who is Ghanashyam and who is Suntali ko poi? And perhaps except for PKB, other folks taking and firing cheap shots may not even be noticed (I for one don't patronize more than two or three "pet" threads at a time -- or may just be on exile). But what I write, I write under Paschim (except on rare occasions when I resort to an English translation of a beautiful Maithili word. Guess what that is? I do that just for a change when I see my name plastered all over. Not exactly a fan of Narcissus, and never had the talent for devious creativity.) Do people remember their firsts? First day in Amrika, first time on an aeroplane? First day at college? First time you saw a face of a Japanese tourist and his fancy camera? First meal you took using knife and fork, first time a woman was sensuously touched? First time you read Czar's musings, Deep's story, NK's poem, and Nepe's Ghazal on Sajha? First time you swam on fresh-water, or the first letter you ever received in your life? Okay, a Sajha trivia: The first letter I, Paschim, received in my life was from a friend from the Plains. It was some 20 years ago. It was a post-card, don’t remember what the picture on the front was (not a Bollywood actress, I know for sure, possibly Janaki Mandir)…but I -- to this day -- remember the address it came from: Paramendra Kumar Bhagat C/o Shri Muni Bhagat Natraj Sound Service Station Road, Janakpurdham. PKB switched to his address in Mahottari soon after -- too complicated to memorize. The Ward numbers keep changing these days. My station in Chitwan just became no. chaar from no. teen. No gerrymandering or Pahade conspiracy though. PKB showed me that letters are written, sent, delivered, and received; and they are one of those “small” things that brings immense joy in life. I was almost 9; he might have been over 12. Wisdom is the daughter of experience. Phebe, wife of the geographer John Tyson used to be a great fan of the monthly letters I sent them when a student in London. With the invasion of emails and glorification of two-liner communications, I’ve lost that real gift of good letter writing now. Simplegal ko killer kabita. Sitara ko tulutulu Najar ra kesh jastai. Khai, ke bhanam? As Slipknot put it so accurately: whoever that lucky bastard is?! Awesome. Dr. girl ka simple feelings are awesome. Hajur kai sabdama: khai aru ke bhanun? :) And you don’t direct cardinal directions…a direction can come pointed and looking! But life is windy, and directions can also mislead. That song by Yam Baral: “Badalu ko ghumto le Illam bazaar chhopinda, maile sablai birsechhu, timilai samjhinda”…reminds me of a real day when I just took off for Purba, the real town of Illam, one foggy day in 1998, when ek jana (to borrow another Yam Baral song: nisthuri le chhadera gai haali) chose to fly Paschim on a bankrupt RNAC jahaaj! "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" was released a few months later at Goon Cinema near Gwarko, Chakrapath. I went to see it with a feminist named Charulata (real name withheld). I haven’t returned her call since. Anyway, good to be back! Let me now go on to do some serious bhaasan in “Democracy in China" thread. And has Arnico begun some policy stuff somewhere? Or is it poltis bhitra ko rajniti -- must visit that too. p.s. akhum lalumai lalayauri bilyauri (anyone recall this great folk song?). Thank you for putting up with my atma-kendrit ganthan. I do this for selfish therapy. I disavow any side-effects.

Now that I am reading the piece: "..I was almost 9; he might have been over 12..." You might have been 9, and I was not 9. But 12!? Hare! Slightly over 10 ho kee ....... In some cultures they don't celebrate birthdays, only festivals....... You could not have been less than 9 -- that woud have been "illegal!" But oh, 20 ke baad geeno mut, ho ki 25 ke baad ho ...... Natraj Sound Service collapsed (financially) during the late-mid 80s! But at its height it was the numero uno in town ........ Kattel "sir" lai thaha chha ... To travel and to write can be an intoxicating cocktail ........

HFC President Paschim ko daat ko barema I predicted as follows: Daat chai ramro ta ramrai ho tara sarlakka pareko chai hoina, cinema ko hero haru ko jasto satta chai hoina, tara pani not bad. Well, my prediction was statistical. It is like Jyotish do. The prediction has very wide applicability, i.e. big standard deviation. I am still hopeful that my prediction is right, because Paramendra said, what Paschim say and what he does don't match, most of the time. It is too early for me to correct my self. I want to make maximum 3 time laughs. First laugh/smile is already there in my first prediction. Second time, I will laugh/smile when I see your teeth, and third time will occure immediately after I see them and compare with my predicted teeth, whether match or not I will be laughing (both cases). Paschim, please, wait till I meet you. It can be a due for long time. Others who know paschim must have laughed/smiled maximum two times. One after reading my guess and other one while comparing my guess their memory on Paschim's teeth. Aru sab besh chha. HG

I was influenced by Bhurtel-Gauthali "love story"; that gave rise to the Sinking Nepal. Aba yo "Raam Kahaani" baata prabhabit bhayera k suru garne ho...just wondering! If I spoil my grades, Paschim, you should take the responsibility :) "..I was almost 9; he might have been over 12..." >>> "12" must have been a typo; isn't it "21". I heard Paramendra hid for 9 years collecting those "links" :) . Being a big fan of Paramendra, except of course, when he comes out and says, "gadaa, ta pahaadi baahun hosh", I have been reading many of his articles, including the letter war between his high school mate and him. One of his articles has more than 50 references! Paramendra, I tell you, YOU ROCK, especially with all those "links". I bet you are not 29 now; noone can read so many articles/books in 29 years even if reading is one's full time job. Liar :) And 9 would have been "illegal" but you could easily make it "legal" by changing the date. [That's why I have 3 birthdays: one real, which only I know, another fake, the official one in Nepali and a third in English which when converted back to Nepali comes out to be different from the first two. I do not celebrate my birthday and I get pissed off when I receive greetings on all three of them :) ]. So much for the age thing.... Daat ko expert ta HahooGuru bhai haalyo!!

Did you know that "friends" ma yo yo bhayo and stunts of "jackass" etc etc. Afu tah blank :-0 and very busy trying to cut pizza with forks. Rt. Hon'ble HFC Prez Paschim, I have understood all the suggestions and full GRAHAN gare. I should really stop on that topic, because M.P. is our respected Transparent Sajha ko President, so whatever he will publish in TSN, will spread all over 1000 unique visitor's brain, and then to real world. It will be like the atom bomb's shock (shear) wave spreading all over the world. I am retreating from that particular topic. Oohi HG "Oohi " is patented word of Oohi Ashu, someone warned me not to use it. Hahoo-ji, As someone who is influenced by reading way too much of that law professor Lawrence Lessig's stuff on Internet law, I hereby declare that my inclination is that intellectual properties need to be shared as freely and as often as possible so that more knowledge may come about to benefit us all. And so, in keeping wth that thinking, yes, you may FREELY use the word "oohi" as often as you want, for yourself and for your near and dear ones. I see that M.P. too uses it on occasion, and that's fine. Active voice, they say, makes your sentences stronger and vigorous. That said, I am struck by Paschim's use of PASSIVE voice in only ONE of the following sentences (see which one it is!), and I quote: "Do people remember their firsts? First day in Amrika, first time on an aeroplane? First day at college? First time you saw a face of a Japanese tourist and his fancy camera? First meal you took using knife and fork, first time a woman was sensuously touched? First time you read Czar's musings, Deep's story, NK's poem, and Nepe's Ghazal on Sajha? First time you swam on fresh-water, or the first letter you ever received in your life? " OK, It's Naipaul all over again, except that, unlike that great but fastidious writer, Paschim, in his illeist tone, displays obvious philogyny. :-) oohi ashu ktm, nepal

Do you want to test "Sunita" (Lonely was wondering whether Sunit le Sunita banayeko ki bhanera)? Use monte-carlno simulation technique. How? Talk with Sunita for thousands of times (sampling the postings and talking styles), the gender will be known finally. This is what Monte Carlo method means. (random number hoina ki randomly Sunita will spell the truth). Then, you can go to Monte Carlo Casino and play the guess game. HG

Paschim ji... Welcome back to Sajhapur! Your musings bring to mind a rainbow of emotions, I, myself have experienced in Sajha these days. It has definitely been an educational experience for me. Amazing how people are genuinely nice; from banter to flirtation...I have vassilated from thread to thread attempting to match each dohari and gazal, word for word...but alas, I have had to retreat to the skies as you did to the jungles! Unlike you, I have no pet threads and therefore step into any that happens to catch my fancy for the moment. Lately, there have been topics spanning, poetry, philosophy, humour, politics, defence, lingerie.................... I have always admired open discussions however ruthless....however, it bothers me that people are maligned for their beliefs, values, ethics, philosophy and above all personal details/life. As I always say, "what I do not post (about myself) is NOone's business", and I do go by that philosophy. Unfortunately, there are those who go to lengths and into details just for the petty malicious reasons of deriving a twisted sense of fun of ferreting out informations, not to mention misutilizing such information. And yes, it bothers me! Paschimji, I am glad you jotted down somethings to this effect....! Again, it is nice to hear your thoughts! SGal, I also owe you something from a loooooooong time ago! :) And I wish you well!

Paschim et. al.: Every once in a while, there comes a person, who, with his/her sheer wit, creativity, and wisdom, untangles you from your stagnant self, and after leaving you for a moment in awe, provokes your mind to pursue the depths previously unseen. Sitara's Fate's Bride rising like the Phoenix, SimpleGal's Simple Feelings, M.P.'s TSN, Paschim's insightful musings, Paramendra's intellect buried in his laborious links, some of Ashu's often poignant and prude criticisms, and other milestones carved by a few others: All of these have, in some way, over the last few weeks of my presence here, made me pause to reflect in their depths and illuminated some hollow alleys in my life with their radiance. It's certainly an honor to be here in such close proximity of the Giants. Peace!

Slipknot, Deep, Suna, Dhumba: many thanks; and Sitara, I know what you are saying; I hear you! Shiva-ji pani Gorkhali bandhu ho? Najar -- khai timi haru ko "grand design" bujhina hai…fictional jamghat ho? Salman Rushdie ka Midnight's Children jastai ki sacchikai ho? Teen-chaar jana sathi haru ko bihe khaana janu chha Nepal tira yo Mangsir-- yeso aafno pani najar ghumaune rahar chha mora haru ko saali tira :) Lonely, haven't you heard Kisun-ji say -- "I am a sakkali abibhait, nakkali kumar" -- bachelorhood ra virginity ma *thulo* antar chha, Udas-jyu. You must know by now -- unless you are a celibate like Isaac Newton the Gravity-wallah :)

It just occured to me that the address in the first letter sent by Paramendra to Paschim almost 15 years ago might have looked something like this: Paramendra Kumar Bhagat C/o Shri Muni Bhagat Natraj Sound Service Station Road, Janakpurdham. www.geocities.com/paramendra Instead of: Paramendra Kumar Bhagat C/o Shri Muni Bhagat Natraj Sound Service Station Road, Janakpurdham. Paramendra Sir, no offense hai :)

Eka bihanai khub hasayo hai M.P. le! For a college student, your humor is damn original and mature (if I may say so without sounding like a patronizing thul-dai). So, it wasn't Al, but my Pal (PKB) who invented the world wide web? B4 garaun :) p.s. B4 = bichaar (according to Hahooguru).

To, Paschim Esq. Sajhapur I thank the gentleman for considering my 'musings' worthy of consideration in a 'first.' High praise indeed, given the caliber of talent that abounds here. During my late teens I stumbled onto the delights of the 'Economist.' I resolved then to someday attain, if possible, even a tenth of the fluidity of such writing. Alas, the field of study I engaged in gave little opportunity for this. Its been an education to watch the discussions here, of which you form an integral part. Despite the thugs, to borrow your phrase, both high brow and low. A contrast to the endearing characterizations of Jira, Deep, Dhumbass, Kalanki to name a few. These ranconteurs suffuse their characters with such unerring reality. Like you'd almost run into them at the nearest 'aloo pasal.' Each one diffuses their depictions with an innocence and purity its almost tangible. That serve as a sharp reminder of what we lost since our land was gripped in turmoil. Your writings do the same. I do hope that gooliyo chiya was not all you sipped in Krung Thep. I had hoped to reccommend the 'tod mun pla' (fish patties in honey sauce) served by the Chao Phaya in BKK, but it slipped my mind in the maelstrom that beset me at work. Nevertheless, for your next trip to the city of angels perhaps. As they say in Thai, Mai Pen Rai (never mind) ! Cheers !

N Ma Cherie Sitara, Might your recent travails here serve as a reminder that " hell hath no fury like a woman scorned ? " A votre sante !

Finally, finally a man on Sajha who knows some Thai, and also that quintessentially English use of the word "Esquire". I now feel like asking you to send an email to Arnico (who speaks Thai and English, among others) who objected strongly when I put Esq. in a joint letter we sent to the Nepali government recently :) Czar, your latest musings just confirm the worth of what I wrote above. Thanks.

Paschim, Terrific. Music bhako musing – sweet, flowing and soothing. And Bonus were brilliant comments from M.P., Oys, SimpleGal, Deep, Sitara, Slipknot and Czar. Ashu le pakdeko spot pani bado rochak chha la. You left something there. But I can not put my finger at. It is meaningful but quite vague. Je hos, rajniti ko kathor ra chiso chhalfal dherai gairaheko belama yo nyano ra komal piece was, as Oys said, soul-provoking.

Paschim, what exactly is the connection between knowing Thai and knowing some quintessential English word? ... or perhaps I am not a man... :)
