Rusty Posted on 10-21-02 2:43 PM Reply Chiple Ji, Very funny.....LOL :D paramendra Posted on 10-21-02 2:56 PM Reply NK: Where are you located? I gather it is the East Coast. But that is hundreds of miles long, the coast. Roti would be nice. I abhor candies. Sniper or not. I have a teetaura taste. Nutty re? Wife. She is in Australia. She should be back for Thanksgiving and Christmas. And then she goes off to Thailand! And then takes off for a South/East Asia tour. Hopefully I get to meet up again in August next year. And then that is when I was planning to head out to Canada/Mexico. Early 2004, I was hoping to head out to my homevillage in south-east Nepal for a month or so. To gather material for a novel. You are the first person who took the bait. But it is still not firm. Hope you e-mail. I am serious. I must warn you though. This as reported by some folks at Epinions.com who tried something similar, as in meeting offline. Cyber acquaintances assume they know each other, and so they meet up with expectations. As in, when you meet old friends. But it is thought best to treat the first meet as just that: meeting number 1. CRISSCROSSING AMERICA ON 18 WHEELS (This is an attempt to rescue the original thread by the said name that has gone haywire...........) paramendra Posted on 10-21-02 1:06 PM Reply Crisscrossing America On 18 Wheels Folks, I have not made the final decision yet, but looks like I will be hitting the road again soon. The idea is to try and go to all 48 states. I have been to 42, but would like to start all over again. And, once I get my green card in about 10 months, I might also hop into Canada and Mexico. I make a standing offer to visit anyone who will e-mail the following to paramendra@yahoo.com: (1) Your real full name (2) Your Sajha username (3) Your number (home, office, cell) (4) Your postal address (5) Driving directions from the nearest interstate to your place (6) A good time to visit you (evenings, weekends for most people, I'd guess) (7) Would you rather come see me at a truck stop, or have me come over to your place? (8) Your brief bio. A few sentences. So I have some idea of who I am meeting. (9) Notes: (anything else you might want to say) (10) Other "contacts" you might suggest I visit with. In other towns/cities. It might not always work out. But I will try. Travelling should be fun: you get to see amazing landscape. Better now than later. I hope to meet up with friends from other spheres of my life as well. And I hope to write a travelogue, get it published. And hopefully I will offer snippets at this thread as I venture from one destination to another. So keep logging in. :-) Bathroomcoffee Posted on 10-21-02 1:32 PM Reply Why don't you put an ad out in NY times and DC post that you are getting your green cad in six months. They have apprehended the duo, did not they?? Still duck when filling the gas! Do not talk to stranger. Wait a minute. You are planning to write a travelouge. You have to talk to strangers. Ok, then *do not* accept candies, and then and if you make it all the way to my area, holler. Maybe I will have some warm roti for you. What do you like with a roti? And what about your wife? Is she as nutty as you are and tagging along with you? :) |

"...Terai ko matrai hoina, from time to time I like to immitate Newari accent, paschim ko accent, Tamang ko accent.." Just because you spread it wide does not make it okay. If it is an honest mistake, as you say it is, please refrain, and let's move on for old times' sake. Rusty: My name is Paramendra - like in Gyanendra - not Parmendar......... batauli Posted on 10-30-02 11:41 PM Reply Paramendra, Tapai le ".. You pahadiya folks. Bahadurs!..." bhanera jun aafu bhitra raheko parajaati prati ko ghrina dekhaunu hunchha, tyasai bibek le tapai kasari aafu lai kasaile "taraibasi madhise" bhanda aapatti janaunu hunchha... ? If it gives you any pleasure, go ahead, call me Jyapu, Bhote, Thakse, Pakhe.. but remember, "you can take Paramendra out of Madhes, but you cannot take the Madhesi out of Paramendra...". Why is it so demeaning when you are referred to as a Madhise (as in Madhes_ko_native).. whereas you yourself find it more convenient to portray yourself as an INDIAN. You need to be sure of who you are and STICK TO IT... dhanyabaad batauli paramendra Posted on 10-30-02 11:50 PM Reply Batauli. Point taken. I posted the following at some other thread: Dumbass: Someone from Madhes is a Madhesi. Someone from the Terai is a Teraiwasi. Someone from the Pahad is a Pahadwasi. Or Pahadiya. But the difference between the word madisey/madhise and Madhesi is the difference between the words negro and n----r. By now, even the term Negro is out of fashion. Afro-American. Similarly, even though, Madhesi is an okay term, Teraiwasi is even better. Please correct yourself if yours was an honest mistake, as opposed to a statement of malice. Cardinal: When the "good" people remain silent, problems arise. DWI: I am glad we are keeping to the point. As for your other point, if the Sajha audience keeps mum while these jokers make sexist and ethnicist comments at abandon, they also lose the right to take offense at the offensive term "bahadur." I think we owe this community some decency, and need to stand up for the same when the need arises. batauli Posted on 10-31-02 12:19 AM Reply Paramendra, African_American is a reference to Americans of African Origin. But that is another story. If you are a "teraibasi" Nepali, you must have heard and used the word "madhesia". It is a very common word among the people at Greater Batauli Terai Region (Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, etc). And if you remember the word "apabhramsa" from your byakaran at BKS days, madhise is a logical apabhramsization of madhesia/madhesi. The derogatory form (equivalent to your n----r) would be marsya, or dhoti. And show me one "pahadiya" who takes offense at being called Bahadur, and I will show you a dozen who would rather be called madhise as against "terai_wasi_nepali_of_hindustani_origin_but_don't_call_me_madhise". I from terai too.. and am proud of who I am.. a madhise... not a dui_jiure like you, Mr 'I am INDIAN by Convenience, Nepali by Opportunity'. dhanyabaad batauli |

As for the trekking route, I still think it is better that we fly to Jomsom then return to Baglung. View ta eutai ho ni regardless of which direction we walk. My major concern is that if for bad weather or any other reason, we can't fly out of Jomsom for a few days then ke garne? Anyway, if our flight from Pokhara can't leave, we can make alternate treks but if we are stuck in Jomsom then there is little we can do. Or should we just forget about flying and trek all the way? La ta let me know what you guys think hai ta. paramendra Posted on 11-10-02 12:45 PM Reply That original thread is stuck. I tried: it does not open up. San, if you happen by, will you please undo the knot there: CrisscrossingAmerica On 18 Wheels? What that means is I can drive absolutely anything that moves on the road. What's nex, hawa gaadi? And I have been talking to this company in Florida. The southern states might be the better option for winter months. Oh, the possibility of coast to coast runs. I once did CA to NC. It was awesome. And I still have only three Sajhawasis who would like me to come see them. Is that all? As for Muglin, I hope to be there the winter after. Crisscrossing Nepal, after the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Florida has the summer temperatures. A ton of sunshine. The stereotypical Florida palm trees: they are there! Downtown Leesburg: there is music outdoors - perhaps coming out of the palm trees - like when you are inside a mall. Classical too. Oo-hoo. Flat, flat, flat. So tropical. Hawaii, and parts of Louisiana aside, this has got to be the most tropical American state. Taxes are low! Supposedly they get all their revenue from tourists. Someone Bush got re-elected, but then that was news before I got here. I am glad I have yet to meet anyone who might make any mention of him. People are too busy having fun in the sun. No time for politics. I guess they don't have names like Girija to chew on endlessly. This is like central Florida. Miami Beach about four hours away! So, don't ask. |

Yes, you are smack in the middle of Florida. Don't forget to go all the way down to Key West...there you can visit Hemingway's house, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville..etc. The sunset is just glorious. Miami's South Beach is something else.....delightful beach and excellent nightlife. Since you are near Orlando..don't miss Epcot Center and Universal. If you are into shopping...there are major outlets near Orlando. |

I second Dirk. You should not miss Key West, a cute little town with its own colors by the sea. The narrow road leading to the key west in itself is also a nice drive. Also swing by the beautiful West Palm Beach if you have not already. |

Parmendra sir: I remember another point, if you end up going to the key west, don't forget to enjoy the sunrise there-the best. Also key west seems to attract more gay people, so be careful :) |
