I just finished reading this week's Nepali Times newspaper. It's possible that I missed the note, but I found no mention anywhere about Gaurab Raj Upadhyay's article (as referred by Hari earlier on this site). Gaurab's article, as we all remember, has been seen -- with evidence -- as being ripped off verbatim from a Web site (without attribution) or, to be charitable, at least seen as observing incredibly relaxed/loose and unprofessional citation standards. Given the urgency of the matter, I'd have expected the editors to publish some sort of explanation, or for Gaurab himself to publish a "correction". But no. It's really sad. I know Gaurab personally, and had had a lot of respect for him, but this sort of insult to readers is ridiculous and we should not take it lying down. On another note, as much personal admiration/respect I have for Suman Pradhan and Akhilesh and others at the Post, I, as a reader, am beginning to have these second thoughts as to whether Mr. Gurubacharya is really the "Paras Shah" of Kantipur publications, if you know what I mean. I mean, let's face it, the evidence against Gurubacharya is pretty strong. Plus, he is not some rookie reporter: he was educated at some college in Nebraska where he must have been taught the basics of citations, and has been an AP reporter. If he, of all the people, did not know what plagiarism is, then one wonders how on earth he landed these jobs in the first place. The Post can do its readers a great service by SPEEDING UP its inquiry process (one week is more than enough!) and deliver a verdict. After all, this whole thing has been PUBLIC for at least three weeks now. Come on!! Sure, being nice, forgiving Nepalis, the rest of us may not want to permanently ruin his career, but at least give the guy a six-month vacation without pay. Getting tired of all this now . . . oohi ashu |

Diwasji, "Thicchak (one kind of nakacharo) sanga kehi lagdaina" - it is the idiom I have heard from my mother when I was a boy. There was a poor man who used to come to our perish asking for some food items and would promise small work in our land in teturn, which he would not make. Every time he came to us, my mother tried to avoid him. My mother would tell him that he did not keep this promise and that one. Sometimes my mother would be so agree with him that she picked a stick up and .....boo! She was near to beat him on his head. Still that man used to laugh and plead for some food - with a promise to work in our field. I saw this happen many times; my mother repeated same proverb, and gave him some food. He was compelled to do so because he did not have his own land where he could grow food like we did. He also had a family which was dependent to him. He used to play the same trick in more than three or four houses. Afterall he and his family had to live. People would tell him lier, Kam-chor and so on but was never worried about what people call him and ........ This story may be irrelevant here to compare. However, your Gajab Chha ba made me think why Gurubacharya would have been ready to do all that and why he cann't give up this. Unless this issue goes to Supreme court who the hell we are to tell this is not ethical ........? Why shouldn't he challenge us that we have no right to allege him of plagariasm - where in the consitution is defined this right (Joshi, 2001; Koirala, 2001)? List of reference omitted ............ :-) Gandhi |
