Some of these news URLs go "out-of-date," so I am doing this copy-paste: Manisha to play Indira Gandhi in multi-crore production Mumbai, Nov 20 Actress Manisha Koirala has been signed to play late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a film titled Indira Gandhi-A Tryst with Destiny. This will be the first multi-crore film project on the life and times of one of the most powerful and charismatic prime ministers the country has ever had, film's executive producer Nittin Keni said. Addressing reporters here Tuesday night, Keni of Gadar fame, said Tabu had been the initial choice but her height did not suit the lead role and added that the rest of the cast will be announced later. The film, directed by N Chandra, has music by Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar. It would go on floors in January 2003 and is expected to be complete by the end of the year, Keni said, adding that the film would be later dubbed in English. The script has been written by Kamleshwar, who incidentally wrote the story of Aandhi in 1975(starring Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar), which was banned by the Government following reports that the protagonist's character was based on Indira. Kamleshwar, who was also present at the press conference, denied that the 1975-film was inspired by Indira's life and said the current project would be 'clean and non-controversial'. Incidentally, the film is being produced by Uttam Singh Pawar, former BJP MP from Jalna and currently a Congress member, who claimed that there was no politics involved in the making of the film. However, he admitted, "If it helps me during the next Lok Sabha election, I will be more than happy". Pawar said even when he was in the BJP, he was always impressed by Indira's charisma and formidable leadership. Manisha, who is currently out of the country, has been asked to reduce weight for the role. UNI -- sorry ............ PKB Leesburg, FL |

What are the chances of Sonia ever becoming Prime Minister? I hope she does. That would be a tribute to India as a democracy. I am neither for nor against someone "born foreign" becoming Prime Minister. Let the people decide for themselves. Now that is democracy. The Congress (I) is already in power in, what, 15 of the states? Should she make it, India will have outdone the U.S. - that other democracy: (1) No woman is even remotely close to becoming U.S. President. (2) There is a U.S. law that says only those born in the U.S. can hope to run for President. Go India! |

That's a bad decision. Firstly, Manisha is a Nepali, and has typical Nepali looks, like almond shaped eyes (as opposed to round), round head (as opposed to long-headed) and medium-sized nose( as opposed to sharp). Indira Gandhi, being a Kashmiri Pandit +Parsee is very fine featured. Secondly, if it's about an Indian Prime Minister, it should be an Indian actress who should play that part. Nobody would want to watch a Nepali actress masquerading as an Indian prime minister. I certainly wouldn't want squander my money on something so damn unrealistic. And she'll never be able to lose all that weight. She's an elephant, I tell ya. She needs to get a liposuction treatment. |

There was this other thread at Sajha last week, something about Manisha at Harvard, or something (Paschim, Swamy might not be welcome, but Manisha is, apparently, too bad you are not in Boston no more!) ----- and some of the comments there were so sexist, like right wingers claiming for about a decade how Hillary is a lesbian! So the woman married to a supposed sex-addict - if you believe those same people - just so happens to be a lesbian!? And the one on Manisha was about how she has been sleeping around and so she may not hope to become Prime Minister of Nepal!? Dang! Manisha is a successful woman. Obviously talented, brains, guts, looks. And I have been watching from afar the whole recent drama of her taking some director to court ... now that is a wonder woman. And all those unbecoming sexist comments ........... Her name used to get paired with every next leading man from the Mumbai movies. At one time it was Nana, if only because their movie had just come about, and oh, what a pataka, the movie: two dynamites on the screen, Nana and Manisha. It is called success folks. She is successful. Stop "bit_hing" 'bout her. ( ... a most deliberate use of the b-word ... ) |

Red Herring, Indira Gandhi was Kashmiri Brahmin( Daughter of Pandit Nehruand Kamala Nehru, who was a brahmin as well) raised in Allahabad, Switzerland and England. She was married to Feroze Gandhi who was Parsee. I hope the director would depict a true-to-life portrayal of Indira....both the good and the bad sides of her personality and policies including the Golden Temple debacle and providing a safe haven for LTTE in Tamil Nadu. Paramendra, Sonia Gandhi will be PM of India when you become governor of Oregon!!! |

"....If Manisha can play Indira, why can't Paramendra play Dharmendra?? ..." Let it be known that Paramendra would LIKE to play Dharmendra, there just have not been any takers as yet. No offers! "...Paramendra, Sonia Gandhi will be PM of India when you become governor of Oregon!!! ..." I think her chances are much greater. She is but ONE step away from the throne/thorn! |
