Well, the Lauda verdict is in, from the CIAA, that is. Now expect the CIAA to lose all its cases in the court in coming weeks. (This country really needs sharp trial lawyers or prosecutors who are not afraid to die to nail the corrpt. With our smartest students not going to law school to be trial lawyers, our legal mechanism/process has been khattam and jhoor.) PM Koirala has been "made aware", in the twisted language of the CIAA, that -- surprise, surprise -- he'd been presiding over a corrupt cabinet. And all this time, I had thought that Koirala's ministers were actually members of that saintly bhajan-mandali from Pashu Pati Nath, singing Ram Ram!! Who knew? And Lauda Air's two FOREIGN representatives are to be arrested and tried in Nepal. Yeah, right. Curiously, the CIAA voted 3-2 to do nothing against Lauda's local agent -- Dinesh Lal Shrestha -- who, I strongly suspect is at the root of this million-dollar Lauda mess. If this guy hadn't gone around bribing politicians, Lauda wouldn't have come to Nepal. I wonder how those foreign reps bribed Nepali politicians without the knowledge/paticipation of their local friend -- Mr. D L Shrestha. Then again, Mr. Shrestha -- I was a mere toddler when he graduated from St. Xavier's in 1975 -- is a smart man who can easily charm the shoes off Imelda Marcos (oops, I meant, Sujata Koirala!) Well done, Mr. Shrestha, well done!! Ah, to be smart, rich, well-connected and to be able to get away with the loot involving millions of dollars from the national treasury . . . now that's really smart business, man. After all, let Chataut and Company eat "jail ko hawa", right? Girija is safe. Sujata is safe. Lauda's local agent is safe. Lauda's Italian/Austrian agents will never be caught. As always, Girija has the last laugh. oohi ashu

We can argue against CIAA, but there can be other reasons why CIAA didn't file cases against the ones you mentioned. First of all, CIAA is so knee-deep in this case, that it has been of personal interest for the prosecutors. The failure to persecute the accused in this case will be another blow to the organization and ,probably, personal blows to the persecutors whom the corrupt leaders and their mouthepieces have been regularly accusing of working without any basis. May be Dinesh and others haven't left any credible papertrail behind them. It will be a good start even if the CIAA can successfully prosecute these people this time.
