There’s a new trend in sajha. Observing and drawing INTELLECTUAL inferences. So I thought I’d also observe very closely and to my dismay, my null hypothesis: “A book cannot be judged by its cover” has been utterly disproved!

Well, Nepal is Nepal. Education is so anarchic, so it is expected! (k bhanya???)..well k bhannu ni. I feel like I am in school again. When you try to voice something in a good nepali or slightly off English, u r considered a PAKHE, an illiterate in other words, NOT INTELLIGENT ENOUGH TO PUT FORTH AN OPINION AND BE CONSIDERED OF ANY SIGNIFICANCE!

Well it is pretty disappointing to see the similar trend develop here in Sajhapur. Only when you can put forth your opinion in polished English with flawless grammar, you are deemed as an INTELLECTUAL, your policies sound convincing, and to a further notch, YOU BECOME AN IRRESITIBLE FIGURE!

Well what’s my point??? Mm well pretty pointless to the intellectuals who know A-Z I guess. I happened to run to a few silent readers, quite a few of them infact. They are scared of voicing out their opinions, for they will be judged on basis of their writing not on their opinions. Believe me, these people share the same passion and have a much better sense of what’s going on around than we do ;)

With due respect, OF COURSE, we have a plethora of talent flowing out here on daily basis, but when even the educated mass are so inclined to this MYTH, consciously or subconsciously, a big part of our own community is missing out. I am sure we all (that includes this freaky oys) like to refute we don’t judge in those terms……but common, is it so hard to point out such judgments prevalent in almost every other thread??

Huna ta I could have got some help from soleil bhaiya and written this in a polished nepali..kyarnu! ehe…pheri intellectual mass le ignore gare bhane tension! Ani afno nepali ni polished chaina…..

Lau yeti nai ahile………If I have any spelling or grammatical errors above, consider as a typo re kya ;) .

“for eye don’t halve a spelling chequer, inn my pee sea! "

yors hitaishi,
Skeptically different, differently sane! :)

oys chilll

you have reaised a ekdamai THIk issue. I also feel the same. Before posting anything, the posters have to reaklize who are theirt targeted/potential readers. Sajha being sajha, you never know who comes and clicks on yoiur posts. So, you have to make it readable, enjoyable and non-technical for everyone to unedrstand. This way, others, who are silent observers but who seem to know more about issues being discussed can come forward, express their views and make this site/discussions more exciting and interesting. Come on, we are not writing for the Royal Jopurnal of ..... or the American Jornal of .....

Many sajha posts these days lack content. There's no content wahtsoever in lengthy posts. I, for one admire ashu's and NK"s posts because they make it readable and enjoyable for all--from a 17 year old freshman at a college somewhere in wyoming to a Prof. at Austin, Texas. To the point, precise and their choice of words.. excellenato! ( i don't think they don't kmnow angrezi.. bujt they seem to know that if you are to write in public, write it in a way that everybody who reads it gets it)

Others go on and on but its like that nepali saying, ghumi firi rumjatar. You (not you, but in general) quote/use metaphors from Greek Mythology to k k , and when you first read those posts, yoiu say, wow! this dude is brilliant, but if you go back and read it again.. you come to realize that big words, unnecessary words and irrelevant comparisions are nothing but a blanket to hide the weaknesses, i.e, lack of content in their posts.

As for me, i don't know angrezi and i an not ashamed to admit this. But, i try to write/come up with counter arguments so that others who are like me, ie, who lack vocab or are not so sure about their grammar but know about the issues being discussed can come forward, present their views and make this site a nice browsing experience for all--from a 17 year old student in wyoming to a Prof in Asutin :-)

if you hapopen to run to those silent readers again, ask them to come and share their views. accepting taht there is diversity without giving up on your stand, i.e, being consistent is what sajha is all about (to me).

Let's shake off this colonial mentality. We have moved on, or even if you have not moved on, it is about time. To be able to speak English in itself is not Mahan!! Oys_chill, as isolated freak pointed out in a simple English that 'dharawahik English' in itself does not tell mental capacity/intelligence/intellectual landscape of a person. Yes, they might impress many [mind you not me, I can see through... I have a special quality to see through all these light-weights;)] Have these people who are so hesitant to express themeselves ever read confessionsj of Nepe? He came here to improve his English (not that it needed any improvement, as I see it) and look at him how well he expresses himself on certain things he cares about. Notice how methodical he is. He actually copies and puts in his computer things he liked, things that left an impact on him AND comes back and quotes that person when he sees fit. [read his posting on 'Happy Birthday JDV'. How about Hahooguru? Did he ever say my English is bad so I won't post???? He even started a thread asking for suggestion! He posts and posts and people including I enjoy these postings tremondously. They are actually jewel of Sajha. Also remember what he says. He copies what he likes and even confesses learning from these postings.

You see, I can call myself a Sajha historian. I am one of the first few posters who started posting right after the inception of GBNC/sajha. I may not be as old as Ashu or Biswo, but I am close. So I have see 'em all! ;) people with good English, people with not so good English, their coming and going and their reincarnation and even their demise (as a poster). People come here for variety of reasons and they stay as long as they can afford or desire. They come here to tell stories and that too beautifully like you and deep and so on.... You yourself mix quite a bit of Nepali when you tellyour stories. The way you do it gives the aura of authenticity. It is enjoyable. It is honest. (sitara says the most "endearing quality in [my] writing is brutal honesty.")

My humble opinion is if people have something to say, they should say it. Not worried about their English. I don't. I also did not go to those swanky so called English school. Just Be consistent in your view (as if pointed out), read and read more, be aware of the surrounding/zeitgeist, and write! WRiting is the cure of all those fears you mentioned and the more you write the better you will be (well, I cannot say that for myself). But take my words for it!

Now, go post! [This line is for all those scared :) people]
kalankisthan Posted on 23-Nov-02 06:34 AM

NK Jyu,

to taa ho!

to paani ho, TYO pani ho!!

May be, some of those silent readers don't want to write. Like me, I wish I had never started writing in Sajha. Its like smoking cigarette -- addictive. Once you write something, you just wanna keep on coming back, expecting that somebody must have replied. Thats the worst thing. Imagine, sometimes I post my "cheu ta puchchar ko" posting all over sajha, and I come back to read it, and i get hooked on like I did on "sauni ko chori" ko jhyal.

I think, I don't have to prove anyone, I don't consider myself and intellectual or intelligent. I don't give a damn about my English, my grammar and my spelling. I read as much posting as I can, and reply as much as I can. I'd rather remain dumb in the "VIRTUAL WORLD" than anything else. I can control my virtual identity. If things go terrible, I'd switch my identity. Nobody knows about my reality but me.

Of course, I'd have a last laugh!!
(I learned this from "Girlpower", a very very good chatter in old e-nepal days. I know she writes frequently in Sajha, and I can guess who she is. :P ... i ain't takin' no names.)

Pugyo!! JPT lekhna pugyo!!
Suna Posted on 23-Nov-02 09:26 AM

I have to quote someone here:

"English is neither my father-tongue nor my mother-tongue"

And this coming from someone who went to a SWANKY english school :). So did I, go to a swanky english school BUT in my home town everybody spoke ENGLISH and my ama used to say, "besi dhak nadekha, yaha ta godha (horse) dorauney ley pani english bolcha" and that pretty much grounded my oh-so-snobbish ideas.

We have wonderful writers here whose "scribblings" have inspired me and other than some grammatical errors, their ideas are so GRAND that puts me to shame. Now there are others with flawless English who seem pretty shallow!

Let me quote Bhanu Bhakta, its been a while so please correct me:

GHASI

Bhar janma ghas tira maan di
dhana kamaye
naam kehi rahos pachi bhanera
kuwa khanaye
Ghasi daridri gharko

Thank you IS-ji for your kind comments.

On sajha -- which is a PUBLIC forum and NOT a moderated academic platform -- I, for one, still STRUGGLE and STRUGGLE to make my writing simple, clear, vigorous,
logical, readable and even enjoyable without being, well, simplistic and reductionist.

To that end, I, for one, am still learning how to maintain a balance between being clear with words while NOT oversimpliyfing concepts and ideas so that they end up, well, meaning nothing.

One issue is that you write in simple English, and some people assume that you
have nothing of substance to say.

[That said, I happen to admire a few American philosophers who are remarkable for their ability to make and sustain complex, layered arguments in plain, simple, ordinary English.]

But if you write in complicated English, and some people seem to think that erudtion practically oozes out of your every syllable, even when sharper, more discerning readers such as NK can see the verbal sludge for what it is: verbal sludge.

Still, there are days when I wish I, for one, could like someday write like the way Paul Krugman, a New York Times columnist and a Princeton professor, writes for general readers: in crystal-clear language with a seemingly careful use of evidence.

That said, I join you and oys-chill and others here

to encourage,
to request and
to urge

many many SILENT sajha readers to come share their thoughts and ideas here
REGARDLESS of how khattam or great their English is.

To partly misquote Woody Allen: Like sex, [posting on sajha] gets better
with practice. :-)

Meantime, I guess, as a novice student, I'm been making an ass of myself for some
time in a few Chinese-language Web-sites . . . and that's fine because making an ass of oneself, committing mistakes and learning from such experiences is one way to learn ANY language better.

Oys_Chilll:
Hats off to you...kyabat!
I mostly read and sometimes write in Sajha, but ever since I came to Sajha (few weeks ago) I have witnessed and thought about the issues you raised.

Unfortunately, it's human nature to take clues from appearance to make judgement about substance. It's "natural" NOT in the sense it is always right, fair or even wise, but in the sense that it's universal.

You are surprised to find that a beautiful lady is rude, or can't believe that the "pakhe" dressed man is quite smart and knowledgeable. A silly but true anecdote: a high-school friend of mine always wondere--"cute girls don't fart. how can they?...it so doesn't fit the picture". My friend has come to believe that they do, as have I. ;)

With language, it's worse, be it in speech or writing. I constantly see some trying to bully others with loud voice, polished sentences, and grand words (not to mention personal attacks and abusive languages, but that's a different story) ...all with or without real substance. Add to that the air or superiority some claim based on the "social standing" or "class" of education (mainly where, more than what), and you see them talking down at you. On some counts, I myself have been guilty sometimes.

My opinion: the problem is not that some unfairly try to trounce your ideas with their language or pedigree.

The problem is that we let them do it. We need to be able to go past the pomp, and evaluate people's speech or writing based on the content.

If many Sajhabasis don't post on Sajha because they think they lack the "sophisticated" language, it tells us about what standards **they think** we Sajhabasis have created at Sajha. In our discussions, we need to look past grammatical mistakes and plain language, and read & respect people's ideas.

Flawless English is nice, but we are guilty of allowing it to cloud our judgement in our dialogs.

My opinion: the only standards we should set are: clarity and civility.

I appreciate the beauty of language, and admire those who create magic with their words (yes, some are right here at Sajha... a pleasure to read). But in our discussions, we need to focus more on the basic function of language--communication.

To those who are shy of participating in discussions: I know how it feels. Sometimes I still need to fight my hesitation. Fairly or not, I lay some blame on my passive education and "humble" upbringing in Nepal. I am still learning to fight the fear of being wrong, or of not being perfect.

I have violated one of my own rules--brevity. So I will shut up within 2 sentences.

To the vocal minority at Sajha: keep it up, but know when to enjoy the beauty of language and when to shread it apart to to get to the meaning.
To the silent majoriy at Sajha: speak up!
khai_k_vanu Posted on 24-Nov-02 04:17 PM

I don't write much here as I like to. These are the reasons:

1. There are so many writings here which take considerable time to read alone. Writing requires thinking and time which most people dont have.

2. There is a saying in Nepali " Mukh hunda hundai naak lae kina bolne." When experts are speaking let them speak is my line of thinking. So I just read. Not that I don't form my own opinion. I do. I also detect their biases.
khai_k_vanu Posted on 24-Nov-02 04:19 PM

Oys dear, you hit on really good points. I agree there are so many silent readers who are reluctant to voice their opinions due to various reasons such as being prejudiced; or not wanting to be a part of this 'clique'. I too was a silent reader for a while until i decided to launch my ganthans, not too long ago, which is full of typos, errors and lacks heavy weighted vocabularies.... my intention of visiting the site is a mere entertainment to myself, share so much with the community that i can relate to, and as some sajhabasi pointed out --learning is a bonus......

But as they say

vision without action is just a dream
action without vision is just passing time, BUT
vision with action will change the world

So all the interested readers/writers ---please go ahead and type the vision you have without any second thoughts....

Najar
trying to keep the vision splendid, but
full of typos/mechanical errors everytime i post

Ahem!

Dui-char din bepatta bhako--it's that time of the semester--here ta ke ke haisakechha! Oys bhai ko kura ma kehi add garnu I don't have...aekdam true kura. Mero euta personal experience...

I think many of you are already aware that I drive a cab part time. Many times, passengers get in, they greet me, I greet them back, and then they go, "Wow! You speak such a good English!" This may be because many of the cabbies are recent immigrants with poor English. One time, a passenger went further than the usual "you speak good English" and said, "...you must be very intelligent!"

That pissed me off. I am usually in a grumpy mood while working--the gnarling traffic, public ra pulis ko hepai (kyarnu, afu ta foreign-looking cabbie only)--so, I bluntly asked, "What do you mean?"

She became nervous at my harsh tone. "Well, I meant that since you speak good English, you must also be going to college, which would make you intelligent...BTW, I am sure you do something else other than just drive a cab, don't you? You go to college?"

"Bhan, bhan, je je bhannu chha bhan, tai mu** haru ko bhasha ramro, tai mu** haru ko bhasha bolne haru mattrai college gayeka, intelligent haru."

She was quiet, baffled at my sudden Nepali, I supposed.

Then I gently said, "Well, you are right. I go to college too--doing my master's--and if you choose to derive from that that I am intelligent, fine by me. But I speak better Nepali than English--English is only my second language."

She was very quiet the rest of the trip, and at the endm, tipped my $7 on a $8 fare, saying, "Good luck for your college!"

:)

All you have to do is point the gun; there is always somebody else to pull the trigger. Actually, some people have already pulled the trigger, haven't they?:)

Nice going:)

Rabi ji

You are a very observant silent reader! thank you for breaking your silence. I do think Oys has a good point here!
Saajan555 Posted on 26-Nov-02 04:58 AM

First of all, thanx to Oys_chill for originating this really nice thread focussed for silent readers like me. I always hesitated to write but still continued reading. I don't know the specific reason behind that. The more I read, the more dhurandar bidhwaans I found in Sajha. Everyone sounded and seemed to be in or graduated from Khatra khatra Universities. Pheri khatra bhanda ta tyo UNIV janai hunna ni bhannu hola sathi haru ley. I meant in the sense renowned. I just felt like Sano mukh ley thulo kuro gare justo ta hune hoina. Better not to write. That kind of feeling used to bar me from writing. I found this thread so encouraging, I just decided to break the cocoon of silence. I came to realize that we do have such encouraging ppl like oys_chill, NK and others over here who made me write at least something. you r the man oys_chill. Two thumbs up for u. JAYE NEPAL.
