"Kati wata rey?…."
It was raining. Dherai dherai barsa pahileko kura ho. Eka desh ma euta Kapil bhanne thyo. Tyo Kapil le tyo rainy day ma looked at his digital casio wrist watch, it was 9:35 AM already. Bharkhar bhat khaisakya chissai hat pants tira puchhdai he came down to his room. Aaja dhila hune bho…he was thinking. He quickly wore his uniform, grabbed his waterproof black leather Chinese school bag (indra chowk nera kinya) and took his Atlas cycle out. "La ma***** kasto pani darkyani….jhan afulai aajai dhila bhaira bela ma…" man manai bhandai he went to look for an umbrella. When he found one after wasting five minutes his grandmother suggested, "barsadi layera jana babu…barsadi…chhata odera saikal chalauna apthyaro hunchha….hyandal ma euta matrai hath rakhera chalauna hunna…". He just screamed, "la…la….malai tha chha….kina karaisya…..but then he also thought that a raincoat is better than this damn umbrella" karang gatilo rainchha bhane ta farkaidinchha ni hawale..yasta mu** chhata ta", Kapil said to himself. It took him few more minutes to find his raincoat. He got out of his house at 9:45 AM.
Those days, hadigaun used to present itself as a messy tole-big time- in rainy days. Hilai hilo…paani ho ki dhal jata tatai. He was an example for senior folks to warn their kids against skating on the streets, "tyahi Amriteko jasto khochyayera hinna parchha jindagi bhar ani niskinchha skating ko maja".
Squeezing brakes Kapil told Kharlyang, "kyariyar chhaina mero saikal ma." It was quite evident that Kharlyang needed a ride on Kapil's cycle. Kharlyang and Kapile both used to attend the same school but in different classes. "Ma dandi ma baschhu ni" Kharlynag spoke and before Kapil could say yes or no kharlyang came limping fast and was ready to remove Kapil's left hand from the handle. He jumped up…saikal le ek choti linthin linthin garyo (probably was saying, 'thukka, mu** double load ma pariyo") then everything settled down. "Aaja bhat dhilo bhera…." Kharlyang gave the reason without being asked.
Right before they passed dhalku..sano tino khalto ma cycle ko pangra chhirechha kyara…hilo chhyapyo…..chhata liyera chhori school puryauna hinya mandai ko pants ma. Mandai could have delivered a long sentence full of manpari words had his daughter was not with him. He noticed kapil on the kathi and the handle then screamed looking at him…."aankha chhaina tero….derpau gadha….. ". That "derpau" was for Kapil's crossed eye. "Bistarai garna" Kharlyang also cautioned Kapil. Kapil le mandai ko ris kharlyang ma jharyo…"la orli ..hinera ja.. mu** janne huni bhe…". Kapil slowed down his cycle a bit. Kharlyang softly spoke, "la la hin..".

The cycle sped towards bhatbhateni…passed rastriya banijya bank ko head office on the left…took right on tangal ganesh after circling the ganesh( ganapati ko rato metal chhata ma dhyaanga hanera they reminded the lord that they are paying their respect). Kahile raincoat ko topi udaune kahile aankha ma pani parne kahile masitarne tyampu le jotla jasto garera chheuma lyaune….ek dam tension bhaira bela ma ke taal fuskera euta kukuur sankera ghumira re chha gairidhara ma …. Jhyakne aailago Kapile ra Kharlyang mathi. "ye ma***** ye…kharlyang raised his both feet up but was asking kapil to speed up "paidal chhito chal mu**". Pidaula ko dui pao masu tanla jasto garne kukkur le Kapile ko barsadi ko euto tukro khaidyo…tyo tukro tanda…saikal ta pachhariyela jasto bha thyo tara dhanna ladena…Cycle battiyo. Now they were in that kasai tole before kisna raj aryal ko ghar. There was a minor olralo but since the cycle was in super speed they were almost flying on that oralo. Just then…oh my god!….few ducks started to cross the street. "ye haas mu**…ye mu** ye brake la.." kharlyang was strengthening his grip on the handle. This caused more trouble for Kapil to maneuver the cycle. "handle jod sanga nasamat bhanya ma****, malai handle cover garna garho bho…" Kapile screamed at Kharlyang. It was getting late.
Kapil was squeezing both brakes as much as he could without losing control. But bidhi ko bidambana! before he could stop the cycle, the front wheel had already gone thru a duck then the real wheel probably completed the gloomy task. "Euta haas mu** chet", They both thought.
The scene became dangerous. Both dudes had no doubt whatsoever that someone was watching their performance with nervousness when they heard a heavy voice scream.."ka…ka…ka….ye…^%$# haas kichyo has kichyo…". Kapile asked kharlyang to pull over his raincoat cap to cover his face and bent down then he kept his head against kharlyang's back and betodle paidal chalayo. Crossed the tukucha with same speed. Kapil asked to kharlyang…."dekhyo hola kasaile?"….dekhna ta dekhyo ni tyasko baaje le tara chindaina hola…paani naparya bheta barbad thyo.." kharlyang spoke. "Afulai din ma dui choti hinna parne bato yo…kasaile chinyo bhaneta mari halyo ni…"Kapil was thinking. Mafatma euta haas ko jyan gayo. He felt bad too. That was the fist ever accident for the dude when a life was compromised. Khalti ma all he got was two rupees and some bhuteko chana and kerau. "Tirne gaanth pani chhaina…", kapile thought. But he was more worried about "bhakkumar godai" than paying the monetary compensation for the dead duck.
With the same vigor, He kept the cycle on speed. "follow garya chha?" Kapil asked kharlyang. Kharlyang looked back and said, "chhaina jasto chha". After that stinky tabela, there was this ookalo. Tyo ookalo Kapile lai single load pani garho lagne…tara that day double load pani sya sya garera ukalyo. Bharkhar bhat khako pet chwas chwas gardai thyo but Kapil was not paying much attention to that. They passed the Uttar dhoka then turned left on lainchowr. Then turned right on lekhanath marga (?). They passed scout office or chilim park, deri on the right….They were running late. It was still raining.
Kapil was still thinking about the duck sitting in the class. He was not being able to pay attention to the teacher. He was not the only one late that morning. Many of his class mates came late. When the second period teacher went out, Rajendra Khadgi, one of Kapil's bench mates, shared his grief with deep anger with Kapil, "yaar…aghi byan euta mu** saikal le hamro duita haas marera taap hanyo yaar…..bhettai bhane……Mu** harule bhoot jasto bhera barsadi lathyo mukh nai dekhina…maile ma**** bhete bhane….duita duita haas la ma****"
"Euta bhanya jhan ma **** duita po re chha?..." Kapile thought with erratically beating heart.

ur stories r interesting !I never miss any of them.Ur stories also remind me kathmandu,my place and I love to read more of ur stories .What I like about ur stories is u describe the situation and the geography of certain place and it's real,exact.Keep going!

Yo ni ramro cha la. Reminded me of my tangal days where I used to circle that bhundey ganesh especially around exam time. Sometimes even before the results came out. Ek choti byaak lagya belama 3 maina ghumina ma rees lay. Cycle ko pangra khatyaang..khatyaang...ajhhai nostalgia bhayo. Janjeer lamo bhera ek mohor tirera ghaat ghatako, kalo dhunga ra pampu rakhera ghar lai gyareez banako, dui jana lai agadee ko dandi ma 1 jana lai pachadi rakhera cycle chalawunda malla hotel agadi chwaank khairini ko tigra jotya..kekekekeke sabbai yaad ayo ekpalta pheri...

Deep, if I took every exit on sajha I'd soon be exiting my workplace ... but yes, it's a nice neighborhood, though perhaps a bit difficult for the likes of me to nagivate with all that hilo and oralo :-)

I just thought I would share one of my badmashis that I had committed during my youthful days. My didi (mama ko chori) and bhinaju live in Hetaunda. During one of their visits to Kathmandu, my bhinaju bought a mountain bike apparently due to limited choices in Hetaunda. It was only after they bought their bus tickets when they realized that the Japanese buses of Sajha were not equipped with cargo holds on their roofs. Incidentally, I was about to visit them in Hetaunda the following week. So instead of canceling their tickets and rebooking on a Tata, I was requested to bring the bike with me, which I readily agreed.
My initial plan was to take the Sajha bus that operated via the Tribhuvan Highway (By Road ko baato) unlike most buses that used the conventional route via Mugling and Narayanghat. That did not remain an option anymore since I was taking the bike with me. So two days before my departure, I wandered around Sundhara and the Bus Park (Sabha Griha pachadi ko) looking for another bus company that used the Tribhuvan Highway. To my dismay, I failed to find any. So I had to settle with the Raina Super Luxury Coach, which operated 25 seater minibuses to Birgunj via Narayanghat and had cargo holds (may be used to load passengers and chicken, animals etc. as well at times) on their roofs.
The same evening something came to my mind: When else could I get a chance to cycle along that scenic highway? I was expecting to come to the US the following August, so the next opportunity looked very distant. As you may have guessed by now, I planned to ride the bike all the way to Hetaunda along the road that involved constant steep ascents and descents for about 120 km from Kalanki to Bhainse. The plan was made but it did require further planning and lying so that nobody would know about the great deed I was about to commit. The biggest hurdle was the fact that I could not reach Hetaunda on a single day. I decided to break the journey at Daman, which would also give me an opportunity to capture the sunrise and sunset panoramic views of the Himalayas. That still did not solve the main problem though. I kept thinking: What kind of explanation can I provide for taking two days to complete the trip that is only about a 7 hour bus ride? I knew my parents would ask me to call home the night I reached Hetaunda. I was also not sure if a telephone was available in Daman. Even if there were one, then what was I to say if my parents wanted to talk to my didi and/or bhinaju if I called them from there?

Malekhu pugda testai 10:30 bhaeko thiyo. About 2 km further at Richoktar (where the petrol pumps are located), I decided to stop for lunch at the Highway Garden Restaurant. I had traveled 72 km from Kathmandu in a little over 4 hours. After about an hour’s stop and a meal of chowmein and coke, I continued further. Soon I passed through Benighat, Bishaltar, Charaundi, and Majhimtar followed by the infamous Jogimara. Then came Fishling and shortly thereafter I crossed the Mowa Khola bridge to enter the Chitwan district. I narrowly escaped from being hit at a curve shortly after that as a minibus from the opposite direction overtook a truck blaring its horn at a blind corner. Well I survived it and continued further. Testai 1:30 tira Kurintar (100 km from Kathmandu) pugiyo. In another half an hour I was in Mugling. So in a little over 7 hours, I covered 110 km.
Because of the mostly gentle downhill nature of the road, the 84 km stretch from Naubise to Mugling had been fairly easy. Except for the stops at Richoktar and Juge Khola, the only stops I had made were to take a few sips of water several times when there was an ascent. After a coke-stop, I continued towards Narayanghat which was 36 km further. The road was narrower and the surface was not very good either. Furthermore, it ran high above the Trisuli. As I slowly peddled forward, I was held by another concern. “Phone bigreko thiyo ta bhanula, but what if my parents call me tonight as they may be worried since they did not hear from me?” As I had planned to stay at Narayanghat for the night (hehe at least I did not completely lie to my cousin), I thought I would call home from a public phone stating that ghar ko phone bigreko rahicha, ani kurai sakiyo. After 2 hours or so, I covered the 30 km to Ramnagar and after another 6 km through the sal forest, I arrived Narayanghat around 5 pm.
I was thinking of finding a lodge and spending a night at Narayanghat bazaar but I was so tempted to cross the Narayani bridge before that. So I rode across the bridge. Right across the bridge, I saw a sign for the Gainda Cottage. It looked nice and the price was Rs 150 a night, so I just decided to crash there. It was almost dusk then. I had a beer watching the sunset over the Narayani from the dining room. I made sure the bike was safe and walked across the bridge to Narayanghat to call home, and lied that since the phone at didi ko ghar was out of order, I was calling from a public phone. I returned to the lodge, ordered a hearty meal of daal bhaat and kukhura ko masu and soon crashed for the night.

The day before my scheduled departure, I picked up the bike from my mamaghar and rode it home. Later that day, I called my cousin and told (or rather lied to) her that I was leaving the next day but was arriving Hetaunda only the day after that as I was visiting a friend at Narayanghat. I further explained her that I had to stop at Narayanghat on the way there since I was planning to return via Palung ko bato. So the problem at the Hetaunda side was solved but I was yet to figure out the solution for my home. I could not tell my parents the same thing I had told my cousin. They would have asked for the details of my imaginary friend. I did have a couple of college friends from Chitwan but I was not really close to them. It was our winter vacation then and I did not have their phone numbers at Chitwan anyway. My parents knew most of my closer friends and none of them were from that area. I finally came up with this idea: “Hetaunda pugeko din phone garchu, aghillo din phone bigryaathyo bhandinchu.”
I packed my backpack that evening and got ready for the adventure. From what my parents knew, I was about to ride the bike to the bus station, load it on the bus, unload it upon arriving Hetaunda, and ride it to didi bhinaju ko ghar. I woke up early the next morning. My mom had already prepared me breakfast as I did my final packing before leaving. After breakfast, as I was about to leave, my mom put some tika on my forehead to wish me a safe trip, as she always did whenever my dad or I left for a long distance trip. As she put the tika on, I just prayed not be busted for what I was about to do momentarily. It was about 6:15 am when I supposedly left for the bus station to catch my 7 am bus. I gave a goodbye pat to our dog and exited the ghar ko compound. After riding to the main road about 200 meters further, I took a right turn instead of taking a left turn that would have taken me to the bus station in about 15 minutes. It was a cold and foggy winter morning and still a little bit dark. In about 15 minutes I reached Kalanki where I bought a bottle of mineral water and secured it on the side pocket of my pack.
Now I was on the highway, and had a long 130 km trip to complete. The road was pretty busy mostly with incoming night buses, and some outgoing day buses. Around 7 am, I arrived at the Thankot checkpost and in another 15 minutes exited the valley at Nagdhunga and saw the first rays of the sun as there was no fog outside the valley. It was a clear and chilly morning as I started the 12 km descent to Naubise. Soon more and more day buses and other vehicles leaving Kathmandu were overtaking me. As I was descending, I decided to abort the idea of taking the Tribhuvan Highway, particularly considering the long climb from Naubise to Tistung (30+ km) as well as the descent from Simbhanjyang to Bhaise (about 40 km). It took me about 40 minutes to complete the descent to Naubise. The road from Naubise had been recently rehabilitated and it was wide with a gentle descent. I was going faster than I expected. In about 15 min (around 8 am) I stopped at a chiya pasal at Juge Khola for a gilaas of tea. It had taken me about an hour and 45 minutes to complete the first 31 km of the journey. At about 8:30 I left the stall and shortly after that was overtaken by the bus that I had booked the ticket for. Reocognizing it by its number plate, I just smiled as it overtook me. Soon, I was speeding past Mahadevbensi, and Simle along the Mahesh Khola. The road was mostly a gentle downhill except for a few short climbs, so I was maintaining an average speed of about 20 to 25 km/hr (judging from the time vs. distance I was covering, the bike did not have a speedometer). I entered the valley of the Trisuli river around 9:15 and passed through places like Baireni, Belkhu, Adamghat, and Gajuri. There were some blind curves where I was a bit scared. Bus ra truck le po horn bajaucha, afu le curve ma ghanti bajae pani sunne hoina kasaile except for the pedestrians.

After a good night's sleep, I woke up the next morning. I had another 78 km to go. I checked out of the lodge and rode back to Narayanghat. Estimating that it would take me another 4 or 5 hours to reach Hetaunda, I called my cousin from a public phone and told her that I was leaving in a couple of hours and should be there by early afternoon. After a breakfast of puri tarkari and jeri at a restaurant by the bus station, I made the steep ascent to Bharatpur. There were a couple of rickshaw drivers that looked like hill migrants who were struggling to pull their rickshaws up the hill with their passengers still seated. I felt pretty sorry to them. Presumably they had come there from Gorkha, Dhading etc. Soon, I was in the sal forest and later passed through Tikauli, Tandi, Bhandara, and Lothar following the Rapti upstream. The road passed through sal forests as well as mustard fields with their yellow flowers in full bloom. In about 3 hours, it was about 11 am, and I had crossed the Manahari Khola to enter the Makwanpur district. I had 27 more km to go. Sangutar is the only place that my fading memory remembers on the way. Around 12:30 I finally reached hetaunda, 224 km from home.
Of course bhanne kura ta aena tesari cycle chalaera aeko. I stayed there for another 2 days and retruned to Kathmandu on a Sajha bus via the Tribhuvan Highway. After passing the barracks at Suparitar and the once popular lunch stop of Bhainse 10 km from Hetaunda, the remaining 125 km was pretty much full of ascents and descents. The bus slowly climbed the narrow and curvy road for a chiya stop at Baghmara. We were soon in the pine and rhododendron woods. Every hairpin bend, my side of the road alternated between the cliff and the edge. Bhainse was pretty much a vertical drop down. After a tedious climb of over two hours, the bus reached Sim Bhanjyang at 2500 meters, the highest point of the road, famous for being blocked due to snow falls.
There was no snow but a thick layer of frost had covered the ground. About 5 km further down, was the lunch stop of Daman. The view, that supposedly ranges from Kanchenjungha to Dhaulagiri was simply spectacular. I was able to identify only a few peaks. After a 40 min stop, I reluctantly boarded the bus and made a short descent to Palung, the largest town on the highway. After an ascent of an hour or so to Tistung, a long descent of about 30 km brought us to Naubise. It took over 6 hours to cover the distance of 109 km. After another hour or so, Kathmandu pugiyo.
Ahile samjhida lagcha, ke murkha kaam gareko hola? What if I were hit by a vehicle, fallen down the road, or the bike had broken down? What if it were stolen? Jhan aru ko samaan jimma liera hideko manche. It was 10 winters ago when I had made this trip. No one other than myself knew about it for almost 2 years until I told this to a Nepali friend in the US. Tesle pani bessari gaali garyo. Euta blind curve ma thokkieko bhae ke garthis bhanera haparyo. Since then, quite a few Nepalis in the US know about my murkha adventure but I have not told anyone in Nepal about it yet. Testai thiyo mero allare buddhi. Saayad hidna aghi amaa le lagaideko tika le garda bacheko ho ki jasto lagcha kata kata malai ta.

Bhanum?? When you emphasized on I thought your bike was stolen during the night and you were really panicking what to do next in the morning. Tara dhanne satte tham tham kehi bhayena cha. Ke garne cycle chornu is not a crime bhanne thaun ma basya chu jahile pani cycle sunyo ki chori hola bhanne kura matra dimag ma pascha bhane, :)))

Vividji, ke asubha socheko ho testo. Aba tyahi quote kai baray bhannuhuncha bhane chahi, the bike did have a decent lock but since it was fairly light, it would not be too difficult for one to run away with it. Ali safe thau ma lock garera gaeko ni. I just did not feel comfortable to ride to Narayanghat when it was dark ke.
