MOBY ATTACKED IN BOSTON MOBY has been attacked by three men in BOSTON. The dance star was playing a show at the Boston Paradise Club in the US (December 11), as part of his ongoing tour in support of his new album '18'. Writing on his official website, www.moby.com, Moby claims he was attacked "with mace". He wrote: "After the show I went outside to get into my car. And there were a few people waiting for autographs, so as usual I stopped to sign a few things. "And then all of a sudden I was attacked by (I believe) three men with mace. They punched me from behind and I really had no idea what was going on. "After being punched in the head from behind a few times I turned around to see what was going on and one of them punched me in the face a couple of times and then they all ran away. So now I'm sitting here bloody and beaten up and waiting to file a police report." As a result of the alleged attack, Moby says he has "bruises or stitches". He will be speaking to police in the coming days. |

'Little bitty' girl tackles trespasser 17-year-old credits training in track, work with horses By Cathy Mong GERMAN TWP., Montgomery County | A petite 17-year-old, irate after seeing three men running from her home in the wee morning hours Tuesday, sprinted outdoors barefoot, clad in pajamas, outran one of the trespassers, tackled and straddled him, then hogtied him with a rope until police arrived minutes later. Melissa Alexander, a Valley View High School junior, said her training in track and running bases for the varsity softball team came in handy, as did her ability to handle horses, which she cares for at her family's property on Stiver Road in rural German Twp. As a result of the young woman's efforts, Jason N. Burkett, 18, was apprehended, said German Twp. Police Chief W. Lew Wilcox. Also arrested were Trestan B. Stamps, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile, all of Brookville. The two 18-year-olds were charged with theft and criminal trespassing in Miamisburg Municipal Court. Both will be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The juvenile is expected to face charges in Montgomery County Juvenile Court, Wilcox said. A fourth person has not been charged. Burkett was charged in September with receiving stolen property, a fifth-degree felony, and was being screened by Montgomery County Prosecutor's Diversion Division. German Twp. police were called after Melissa's cousin, 21-year-old Jennifer Alcorn, saw a vehicle pull up slowly in front of the driveway, back up and stop. Three men jumped out and ran up the driveway, where the family's four cars were parked. Alcorn, staying with Melissa's parents while her house is being built, went upstairs to alert her aunt, Vickie Stanley. "I told her just to flick the lights on and off a couple of times" to scare off intruders, Stanley said. "Then I crawled back into bed." Melissa, by then awake, followed her cousin downstairs, and both heard noises. The teen opened the garage door and saw someone running away. "That's when my daughter took off after him, ran about 300 feet and tackled him on the grass," Stanley said. She described her daughter as 5-foot-3 and 110 pounds, "a little bitty thing." Police described Burkett as 5-foot-10 and 140 pounds. "I felt violated," Melissa said. "The only thing running through my mind was, ‘How dare you?’ ” Her mother said that Melissa yelled and asked her to bring a dog leash. She grabbed a lunging rope, used to exercise horses. "(Melissa) tied his right hand and wrapped it around his neck and held him down until the cops got there," Stanley said. "She had it all under control." |

Talking President Bush doll takes Irvine company by storm By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer Published 11:30 a.m. PST Thursday, December 12, 2002 LOS ANGELES(AP) - A President Bush doll that says things like "We're working hard to put food on your family" and "I will not hold this nation hostile" has turned into a huge hit for a small Irvine company. The 12.5-inch-tall likeness, which features actual clips from Bush speeches and campaign stops and costs $29.99, sold out a first shipment of 12,000 this week. A second shipment won't arrive until after Christmas. "Everything is gone. We're in a back-order situation right now," said Jim Wessling, co-founder of Talking Presidents.com, Inc. "We anticipated it being a very popular item but we just didn't think it was going to take off that quick." Although the doll does utter some of Bush's malapropisms, most of the 17 sound clips are straightforward quotes about the war on terrorism and other topics- statements such as "Terrorism against our nation will not stand." Wessling and son-in-law John Warnock, the other co-founder, are "staunch Republicans," Wessling said. Warnock, a garage renovator who also collects action figures, came up with the idea partly out of admiration for Bush. "Nobody had done what he considered the true action heroes, which would be George W. Bush," Wessling said. It's unclear what the real Bush thinks of the little fake Bush - the White House press office did not immediately return a call for comment. But Wessling said some Washington-area customers were planning to give Bush a mini-Bush for Christmas. "There's nothing derogatory, everything is complimentary, there's nothing to make fun of him ... (but) the doll is a good representation of the president, there are two or three of his Bushisms," he said. The company operates out of an Irvine warehouse where Wessling runs his business importing products from Hong Kong. Over the years he's brought in items such as a Pet Vac to vacuum your pets and a Cat Scram that shoos cats off countertops with an ultrasonic speaker. The talking Bush has surpassed even the Pet Vac in popularity. "It's been phenomenal," Wessling said. The craziness started last week, when a picture of the doll appeared on the Drudge Report Web site. The company got 600,000 Web hits in a single day and media calls from around the world. They had to take their phone number off their Web site and post a message cautioning that no more dolls were immediately available. Another shipment of 12,000 should ship from Hong Kong on Dec. 30 with a third shipment on its heels, but that won't satisfy disappointed Christmas shoppers. The Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace ordered two cases but sold them out within days, said spokeswoman Arianna Barrios. "It's so out of control," she said. The fledgling company isn't planning to stop with Bush. A talking Ronald Reagan is in the works for the spring. After that, Wessling and Warnock plan to manufacture talking Richard Nixons, Bill Clintons, John F. Kennedys and George H.W. Bushes. "It's endless where we can go as long as we can get good-quality sound clips," Wessling said. |

Thursday, December 12, 2002. Posted: 15:20:18 (AEDT) Federal MP stuck in wrong loo Federal Labor MP Graham Edwards says there is a serious side to an able-bodied Member of Parliament being caught in a disabled toilet at Parliament House in Canberra. Newspaper reports say the MP, believed to be the Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper, had to call for assistance on Tuesday night after he could not get out of a disabled toilet. Mr Edwards, who was disabled during the Vietnam War, mentioned the incident in Parliament, highlighting the fact the MP hit the assistance button when he found himself stuck in the disabled facility. Mr Edwards pointed out that many disabled toilet doors do not open inwards or outwards but simply slide. He says the serious issue is that, in the wider community, disabled car spaces and toilets are often abused by able-bodied people. "I just think at this time of year particularly people should respect the fact that disabled facilities are put there for people with disabilities and at the end of the day, ignorance isn't a disability," Mr Edwards said |

Posters to show prisoners how to hang themselves A poster campaign from the Prison Service will show prisoners in England and Wales how to hang themselves. The Service hopes the “shocking” campaign will reduce the number of prison deaths, which this year stands at 89. They will show images of hanging inmates with descriptions of how easy it is to commit suicide in a cell. The director general of the Prison Service, Martin Narey, told The Independent, he’d decided on the measure after consulting the Prisons minister, Hilary Benn, the Samaritans and prison reform groups. He argued the campaign wouldn’t encourage more prisoners to kill themselves, saying, after 89 jail deaths this year, hangings had become commonplace at prisons. Mr Narey said: “Not everyone agrees with me about this. Some people believe if I do as I’m going to do it might put this in people’s minds. But this is in people’s minds already, we’ve had 89 people kill themselves.” He said he hoped the “very frank and very stark” images would “shock, and grab young people’s attention and get them to take the danger to themselves seriously”. The decision comes as new Home Office figures forecast that the prison population could rise from 73,000 to 100,000 in four years’ time. Even under a best-case scenario, the figure could be 91,400 in seven years time. Prison reformers argue the number of suicides is a by-product of overcrowding. —Ananova |
