The Marrying Man

Peter Tufo, Bill Clinton's ambassador to Hungary, has been trekking in Nepal for 25 years, and now he's brought home quite a souvenir — his fourth wife.

And though the sixtysomething Tufo didn't exactly pluck his thirty-something fiancée out of her cradle, he obviously peeked: She was a child when they first met.

Maya Rana is the daughter of Tufo pal Prabhakar Shumsher J.B. Rana, a Nepalese industrialist and an economic adviser to (and business partner of) King Gyanendra. The king took over in Katmandu after his brother, the former monarch, and eight members of the royal family were massacred last June by the crown prince, who then killed himself. A friend of Tufo's says that his fiancée had to identify the bodies.

The very rich Ranas are one of the two most powerful clans in Nepal, where there is a rigid class-and-caste system. After his years as a man-about-New York-and-Southampton, Tufo, a lawyer and investment banker, should know his way around pecking orders.

Tufo also knows from powerful clans. Wife No. 1, now Alexandra Gardiner Creel Goelet, is the co-owner of Gardiner's Island between Long Island's two forks, which Charles I gave to her family in 1639. Wife No. 2, Francesca Stanfill, is a daughter of a former chairman of 20th Century Fox. And wife No. 3, Kimberly Paige, who left Tufo last November, is the step-daughter of real estate operator David M. Baldwin, a former partner of Harry Helmsley.
