For those who are interested in contributing towards community development in nepal, here is one opportunity

**********************************************************

Namaste from St. Louis, Missouri!

My name is Leah Schulte and I've been involved in a small grassroots community development program in Nepal since 1998. In the mid 1990's, I was a volunteer teacher in a government school in the hills a 2 day walk northeast of Kathmandu. I later "adopted" the area and with the help of family & friends started the OUEST nonprofit corporation here in USA. We launched an integrated community development program working in the areas of education, health care, agroforestry and women's issues in the 11-village area where I had worked on the Nuwakot-Sindhupalchowk districts' border.

OUEST is now in its fifth year of helping Nepal. We continue to assist a preschool and local farmers & women's saving groups in our initial project site. We also now have a partnership program where we support and empower selected Nepali NGOs. These programs include a child sponsorship program, a pro-poor pro-environment NGO, and a social work program launching village awareness & training initiatives.

Recently, OUEST collaborated with University of Missouri-St. Louis to develop and publish a 2003 calendar on village life in Nepal and OUEST's programs there. We are trying to sell the calendar to raise funds for our development programs PLUS raise awareness on basic living conditions in Nepal. We feel that many in America are disconnected with how others in developing countries live and the challenges they face on a daily basis.

More calendar specifics:

8 X 18 inch wall calendar with wood dowel and jute string hanger
two tone photos and background information of basic living conditions and village life
American and major Nepali festivals/holidays listed
$12 by mail order only
I'd appreciate if you could send this email on to your member list or post on your organization website if possible. Those that are interested in purchasing a calendar can send a check or cash to:

OUEST
2200 Pestalozzi St.
St. Louis, MO 63118

Calendars will be mailed back promptly.

I got this email, too, and it came with an attachment showing one of the calendar pages. Looks good. I really like the idea that it has Nepali holidays, too. And who doesn't need a calendar? My check's in the mail :-)

If anyone knows how to post an attachment to Sajha, I'll do that so people can see it.

Sally,

I too, received the e-mail with an attachment but being a tehnologically challanged as i am could not post the picture.

On a side note, i had run into a woman who runs an NGO--Mitrata Nepal, a partnering NGO with OUEST not too long ago. She had told me OUEST and its coordinators have been frustrated in lack of nepali people's involvement in their venture even when they approach nepali people in the US. Its not that we are obligated to be involved but i think it'd be nice to show them that we too are immensely interested in the development, progress of our community. So folks, this is an opportunity. We all need calenders, will be nice to see pictures from Nepal when looking up some days/months. Knowing nepali holidays will also come handy. So lets use a 12 bulks amount for a good cause of to our community.
