University of Co.'s foreign students get jail time for not carrying a full class load as stipulated in student visas. Check out the story below:

http://www.cnn.com/2002/EDUCATION/12/27/foreign.students.ap/index.html

All the knee-jerk reactions to 9/11 are going to bear some bitter fruits for this country. With the Republicans in full swagger, all new judicial appointments are going to load the benches with some shade of Trent Lott. These and other such moves are certain to generate ill will with a vengeance on an ever increasing scale.

Things look set to get bleaker for liberty and freedom. It won't help one tiny bit with the war on terror.

There are none so blind as those that look but can not see.

I don't see the reason behind this complain...

Liberty is not to break the law rather it is a rule of law. The INS has closed their eyes for these crimes for a long time. It is about time they start doing something.

There is another thread about the same topic of what’s happening in Southern California. I am combing my responses to both here. The other article said that “the arrests were part of a post Sept. 11 program that requires all males over 16 from a list of 20 Arab or Middle East countries, who do not have permanent resident status in the United States, to register with U.S. immigration authorities.” That’s messed up! It assumes that women cannot be as ruthless as the male suicide bombers of the past. Actually wasn’t there a young female Palestinian who blew herself up about a month or two ago?

And in this article, some official in Colorado university said something to the effect of how this is simply alienating people who could be our best friends and ambassadors once they return to their countries. And that is absolutely right!! I do think what is happening is a bit heavy handed, but it comes after many many years of INS turning away from the reality of immigration or mismanaging the implementation of policies… which in essence is one of the crucial factor that made 9/11 possible.

Of course immigration policy has always been subject to the whims and political maneuvering of every presidential race… from Bush sr. to Clinton to bow Bush Jr. And I do think this particular policy of having to register… when applied to such a narrow demography… stinks of “racial profiling”, but yet at the same time, we know from 9/11 and the other events in Africa and Indonesia, that there is a particular profile that fits the attackers!! So what to do? I say if this is really going to address the possibilities of future attacks within the US by certain groups then it seems justifiable and that the people who have to register should simply do so in good faith as inconvenient as it might be. But of course the issue remains that these measure will really get to the bottom of the problem and help nab those who might be plotting to blow up another building somewhere in the US or poison civilians. Probably not!! So we remain in a conundrum!

I disagree with people who say “just follow the rules” too though. Hey, in a democracy people should not just follow the rules… but be part of the discourse that shapes public policy. At least the issue is being debated publicly and it is receiving media attention. I really don’t think there is a “grand design” underway to rid the shores of this country of “those” people – whoever those might be at any particular time (with Muslims and middle Easterners fitting the bill right now). As much as people want to compare what is happening today to what happened to the Japanese Americans, I say this is a different world!! There are too many people who are seen as the “other” to let a group be persecuted. Maybe that is naïve on my part, but I truly believe that there are more “good” people at the helm than “evil.” And there are concerned citizens who hopefully will not stay silent unlike those in WW II in America as well as Germany.

There are always going to be folks to take issue and those who just look for yet another excuse to blow another building and kill innocents. We cannot be paralyzed by the fear that some particular policy will further antagonize antagonists. Something has to be done. What has been done might not be THE right think, and people are talking about it, debating it. That’s great because hopefully it means that through all the struggled and negotiations at least somewhere down the road they will get it right……

And then Trent Lott!! Well, all I can say is he has been forced to resign and a new guy is in his place. That too is hopeful!!

Well said Surya.

Ati Sarbatra Barjiyet! Too relaxed INS lead to 9/11 and too heavy handed will lead to more animosity towards Americans in the long run.

But, this country is known to be a come back kid and has 'checks and balances' in place. So, as you said, let us obey the rule of the land.

Just like we obey the rule here, don' forget to obey the rule of our native land too when we go home. (Satire for those of us who keep on putting down on Nepalese rules and regulations and they are the first ones to break it...)

Now THAT'S what you call a crash course in time management! I think it's totally unfair to expect folks who don't bother to learn the rules in the first place to obey them. I mean, how can anyone succeed in higher education if they are always having to learn rules, regulations, guidelines, limits, boundaries, etc.?

Despite the Washington Post article's statement that "Iranians consider themselves among the wealthiest and most assimilated immigrants in the nation", I think the $1,000 bond is the real sticking point. Evidently, the INS has insulted some of "the wealthiest and most assimilated immigrants". To be more culturally sensitive, it coulda been "For you, my special friend, bond will only be double." Low-ballin' INSers!

Surya, I will point out that, despite your obvious bias, homicide bombers tend to be more or less equally ruthless, regardless of gender.

As for INS, well, when they do something, let's just say that they double up on their efforts. Just be glad that Nepali males are not on that list, as there're lots of Nepalis in Colorado and elsewhere in U.S. who just might be over the line as well.

To spin the protest sign, "What's Next, Grades?"
surya Posted on 27-Dec-02 10:59 PM

"Whine and chij"...eheh thats funny!

I am biased, but only enough to point out someone elses bias. Women might be the next generation of terrorists.

As for Nepalis being "over the line," sure, along with the millions of Mexicans, Guatemalans, Chinese, and whoever else. "Just be glad that Nepali ..." that makes no sense in the context of the policy in question which has been introduced as a measure against terrorism. Now what terrorist acts have Nepalis been conducting to warrant such a policy? Okay besides the sadly confused Subash Gurung and his 9 knives, that is!!

Jailing someone for dropping a course is ridiculous!!!
Dropping a course is a natural part of going to college for many students, and does not show any lack of diligence in pursuing a degree!!!
