I heard it from the grapevine that GBNC tried to charge its own Tamu community money when they asked if they could borrow their PA system is this true ? I thought the whole purpose of buying that equipment was to save money for the community when it holds functions right ? What's use of it if OUR VERY TAMU nepali community had to go rent a sound system for their function while GBNC PA sat Idle in storage. And the Gbnc president had no shame kissing the TAMU Communities ass last night for presenting the cultural programme and FREE FOOD. trying to accomodate them in our NEPALI community(its sad that they did not think NEPALI when they asked for the PA system)

The programme that was presented yesterday is by far one of the best I have ever seen here in Boston. I hope the current EXE. comittee can match up the expectation the TAMU community has set. Let us see what GBNC is really capable of. Lets hope that all of them are not just there to fill their resume for name sake.
Damodar Posted on 31-Dec-02 01:52 PM

I had heard this too. Yeah what is going on here ? Tamu community contributed for that Pa system too. In fact according to Sulsuley the higest bidder was from Tamu community too. So why should they have to pay for something they already donated Money for ? This part I do not understand.

Yes, Yes, Yes! The Tamu Party rocked Boston last night!!

The Push Pandhra Loshar Party held by Boston's Tamu Samaj was one of the best Nepali function I have had attended here in this town! Kudos, Gurung sisters and brothers, you make us all proud to be Nepalis!

The songs and dances were excellent...especially the folk jhaure and dohari numbers. Ms (Tika?) Gurung and the Oli duo were a riot, especially with a full mouth to mouth kiss on stage by the latter couple! Bollywood, are you listening? You sure got a lot of catchin' up to do!! The food was fabulous, it had such 'thet' name taste to it...not like the bland Indian resturant swill.

Even though the party was held in one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the world, the organizers magically created a genuine pastoral ambience and goodwill during the event. There was simple rural hospitality characterized by its sincerity, devoid of all commercial pretensions and sophistications. However, the no-fee policy must have cost them bundles. But it speaks volumes about the famed Gurung generosity...which I have had the honor of experiencing a few times in Lamjung villages.

As I was enjoying the beautiful evening, one idea kept coming back again again: if all the rainbow of jats and janajatis were to publicly celebrate their own cultural festivals, Nepal would be one big carnival land. There would be festivals and feasts all through the year...there would always be something to see and taste from the multicolored rainbow of our nation. Besides giving immense joy to the Nepalis and brining in additional tourists, such a practice would also work to further national intergration and goodwill between the various jatis. After all, look at Brazil, it has become world famous for its carnivals (and soccer of course)!

Regarding Jhilkey's comments: I am sure that GBNC can certainly learn more from the success of this event last night, but it does not help anyone to set them in an antagonistic relationship. If there was some financial/administrative problem with lending the music system, I am sure it could be sorted out in the future so that there is maximum cooperation between Nepali groups in Boston. I think there is already much bad karma back home and too many are already working overtime to divide us at present...our work and deeds here should at least set an example to suggest that an alternative, harmonious existence is possible. Let us begin to bridge communities, not break them.

I guess I am spurting all these warm and fuzzy sentiments ... Yesterday's Tamu function has just made me romantically optimist for our country...the whole ambience was just too infectious. In times of darkness and despair, the Gurungs sisters and brothers have given me hope and reminded me what it is that I love about Nepal... and what it is that makes me proud to be a Nepali. Simply, Jai Nepal!

On this upbeat note, I sign off from year 2002 wishing you all a very

Happy New Year to all and may peace and joy return to our beloved land again!!

Congratulation to those who organized the festival nite. Cheers to all the hard work and brilliant planning of executive members. Please keep up the good work and let us bring to world together.

Sundar Gurung and the Boston Tamu Samaaj definitely threw an awesome party last night. Thank you for having us over and Congratulations on a job well done!

On a different note, if there is anyone to be "blamed" for asking for a rental fee for the GBNC PA system, then that would probably be me. I purchased the system for GBNC last year to help out GBNC. GBNC spends a significant amount on renting PA systems everytime it hosts a large event with performances. In order to ultimately remove such a cost to the organization, I purchased the system with the understanding that GBNC make a payment towards the cost of the system everytime it is used until the systems is paid for. GBNC has been doing this. Tamu Samaaj inquired about the system a few months back and I suggested to GBNC that it charge a small fee for the rental. So, on behalf on GBNC, I quoted a rental fee, which was significantly less than what GBNC itself pays for the system's usage. Also, I did not know and I dont think GBNC Council knew at the time, that the event was going to be offered for free.

As a BOD member of GBNC, I would like to see the organization have an excellent relationship with other new and existing Nepali organizations in Boston. I personally know that is what the current president and his team wants too.

Wishing everyone a Happy Loshar!

gbnc-president Posted on 31-Dec-02 08:22 PM

Jhilkeji,
I like to take some time on New Year's eve to answer your allegations.
Yes we did rent them the equipment, why does that itself sound bad? Like Bik Yonjan said, we collect certain money from every event to pay for the sound system loan amount. Hope Bik Yonjan's response earlier in this thread has made things clear regarding the equipment rental.

Even if we were just charging for the sake of charging some amount
and making profit, the amount we charged was much less than the amount one would get charged to rent the equipment. And where is the profit going to? It is going to fund other GBNC activities. It is not going to be used to pay the GBNC President some huge bonus or salary like some for-profit corporations do. Its all for GBNC activities, my friend.

There is no question that the Lhosar celebration was indeed very impressive yesterday nite. And I took this perfect opportunity yesterday to mingle with community leaders and congratulate them, as I believe outreaching to more and more Nepali communities further helps GBNC to fulfill its goals. I considered that mingling part "networking". However you chose the word "ass-kissing" to describe my actions yesterday. Jhilkeji, I would
rather mix with community people and as a result have people like you call my action "ass-kissing" rather than sit quite in a corner.

Let us also not forget that GBNC and Tamu Samaj do not exclude each other.
Members of Tamu Samaj are indeed members of GBNC community. You will see the members from Tamu, Gurung and other communities doing "hoste ma haise" in upcoming GBNC events like concert of Yam Baral, Babin Pradhan, Nyhoo Bajracharya and Raju Tuladhar, Baisakhi Saanjh, Dashain saajh, etc.

Lastly, I wish everyone a happy New Year. Congratulations to Tamu Samaj
for organizing such an wonderful event yesterday evening.

Ah! Transparency in action. If only we could ask direct and public questions to our Members of Parliament like this back in Nepal, everyday would be a Losar day.

Congratulations and thanks to Boston Tamu Samaj for the wonderfully organized celebration of Gurung Lhochhar.

It "rocked", indeed.

It was refreshing to see such a diverse Nepali crowd participate in the celebration.

I hope the success of the event encourages others in Boston to organize similar programs of their own.

Thanks again.

Happy Lhochhar!

Jhilkey Posted on 02-Jan-03 04:09 PM

Dear Mr President,
NOw does this mean that every time GBNC uses that Equipment they are going to put a certain amount of money into some sort of a trust fund ? I do not understand your logic here. When its time to take donations you want $$from all different walks of Nepali culture. But when Gbnc has to give something they are going to charge people everytime ? Why they don't fall under that Nepali umbrella ? I did not accuse you of pocketing money(some of our ex presidents have done that) or benfiting from it. But this double standard has got to go. I am sure GBNC is going to ask help from those very people that put togather that programme for their future programme. But do you really think that they would feel welcome in GBNC after you have pulled a stunt like that ?
Hemendra Bohra Posted on 02-Jan-03 04:37 PM

I think the equipment was bought with money loaned from Bik, the former president of GBNC.

The idea was to charge rental fee to those who use the equipment (including GBNC), until the loan is payed off.

I guess once the loan is payed off, GBNC "can" allow free use of the equipment for community events.

Yahi hoina ta kuro, Bik?

Jhilkey Posted on 03-Jan-03 02:04 PM

My uderstanding was that the equipment was paid for by the 1974 left over funds and the left over $$ from Sandesh fund(please do correct me if I am wrong). According to the hisaab Kitaab that was shown last yr. the Balance sheet did not say that GBNC was still paying for the equipment. See this is what I am talking about. We as member did not know all this stuff. that is why we need to have memo's and clear hisaab kitaab. For an outsider it all looks like a big grey area where nothing is clearcut. People need to let us know what is going on. And it is the duty of the President to let its people know what is going on Right ?
Saajan555 Posted on 03-Jan-03 02:44 PM

Make sure everything is going right. At least try to be honest. Don't take corrupt Nepali leaders as ur role model. Natra...................
Hemendra Bohra Posted on 03-Jan-03 03:26 PM

The Balance Sheet of GBNC has been available at the following link for some time:

http://www.gbnc.org/sajha/html/gbnc/finance.cfm

It shows an Emergency Fund of $1035 (left over from Sandesh Fund), which I guess is to be used only for emergency.

It also shows a loan remaining $2132 (for the audio system) and provides the following note:

"Bik Yonjan has given GBNC a personal loan at no interest for an amount equal to $2,622 which was used to purchase a Sound System for GBNC. "Asset" is the
value of the equipment, "Loan Remaining" is the amount that remains to be paid and "LoanPaid" is the amount that has been paid. Bik will be providing an additional
loan of upto $1,000 to purchase additional equipment and make the system complete."

So, I guess the information was available, after all.

Thanks.

Thank you Hemendra Bohra very much for clarifying the whole confusion. But I still do not agree that Gbnc should have asked for $$$ when the Tamu society asked if they could borrow the Pa system. After all they are part of our Nepali community. I guess the current Gbnc president has no idea what is going on. Cause you and Bik seem to be answering all the questions here. We were not aware of the whole loan situation. People should have told us. and dherai dhanyabad to Bik too for extending his arm to help GBNC out. My apologies to to have suspected hanky Panky here. Cause it did happen the year before. The hisaab Kitaab was Golmaal when the other president left office.
