Hi friends, I have just started a new emailgroup for fans for Nepali folk music because I searched for one and did not find any. Nepali folk music is right now at its height of popularity. Folk music or Lok Geet as it is better known, is in the mainstream now - equalling or even surpassing the popularity of pop music and film music. Hence I decided to start a new email group so that all Nepali folk music fans like myself can get together. You are welcome to share your views on Nepali folk music, discuss new releases and even share audio files on Nepali folk songs. One interesting feature from the moderator: FEATURE SONG OF THE WEEK - changed every week - a nepali folk song .. available for download .. in mp3 format. If interested .. join the email group and make Nepali folk music flourish. Just go to the group home page now: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lokgeet and join the group. OR Simply send an email to: lokgeet-subscribe@yahoogroups.com See you there Prakash |

Dautari, Great idea, I think you are doing a great service to all those who love Nepali songs. With the new site you have opened, can we just log on to the web site like gorkhali.com and get a selection of lok geets? Man that would be great! So congratulations on having started something that will give much joy to many Nepalis like me. Best of luck! Suva Chintak |

This group sounds really interesting. I agree with you Prakash, Nepali Music seems to be undergoing some sort of popular renessaince... both in terms of an expanding audience and the number of growing newer artists who are coming into the genre having been exposed to a variety of styles and yet choosing the folk tradition as *their* way to express their creativity. Pop artists are also using folk as the base to build their "pop" tunes which in essence is a sort of musical pidgin between folf and western pop trasiditons. So really, what a great time to be intentional about the growth and development. Ramro. Tara launa! Rastaman le pani ***Nepali*** folk music po ruchaudo rahecha ta!! I woulda thought Bob's reggae beat and rythm woulda soothes your revolutionary soul ni, Rastaman, kaso? :) |

Dautari, good idea. Count me in sainju@apl.jhu.edu i have a great collection of Nepali folk music from the 60's. they are on tapes though. i don't have a way to convert them to CD unless someone teaches me how. I tried directly recording from tape to my PC and removing the static noise. but the quality is not too good. Well, keep me in the loop. SMSainju |
