I was probably 6 or 7 years old....I remember learning to bike.....we got this bike from some foreigner who was leaving nepal and he was getting ride of everything including the toys that belonged to his son...it was old and only way it could be stopped was by coming in contact with a wall or some undesired object..... so we got this bike and i was very enthusiastic about learing to ride....my parents wont let me ride outside so I had to do it inside the house....we had a one story house with about 10-15 feet long corridor so I ended up using that as my "learn to ride lane" which was equivalent to "skin u alive lane".....i said "skin u alive lane" cause as i tried to ride...i'd drift toward one or the other wall...and my tiny knuckles would come in contact with the wall, so my knuckles to the wall were like potatoes to potato pealer. Dam!!!!! learing to bike was painful.

Hey Jack, you reminded me of my own childhood. I think I was about 9 years old then. After lots of roi karai, my parents finally bought me a bike but I did not know how to ride one yet. As it was in your case, I was banned from practicing on the street. Ghar agadi ko sano chaur ma sikna parne. I had a very hard time balancing the bike as I attempted to use the pedals. My dad was teaching me how to ride it. I spent a good deal of time with one leg on the pedal and the other one the ground. Later on, I could move a few feet with both of my legs on the pedal. It must have been 3 or 4 days after buying the bike, as my parents were watching me practice I finally managed to circle the little chaur without stepping on the ground. Both of my parents clapped. I must have been the happiest boy on earth then. Soon it became boring to ride on the chaur but I did not have the perimission to go out. Finally I was allowed to ride on the street but within a "prescribed" area that was off the main street and also within perhaps 500 meters from our ghar. Tespachi po ramailo suru bho ta. Talakka talkinay naya cycle, yeso bato ma manche dekhyo ki tirling tirling ghanti bajauna ani gadi ayo bhane side dina kasto majaa authyo. My prescribed route did not include any blacktopped road. On those days, there was barely any pakki sadak on my neighborhood apart from the main street. I had to wait for a while to get the permission to ride on "bahira main road." Once I finally got the permission, I discovered that the real pleasure of cycling existed on "pitch roads." Joltin nakhai kana silililililla chalauna po ta majaa audo rahicha ganthay.
