Agent 007,
The quality of your intelligence on Sudha Shah is rather appaling, to say the least! Are you getting old? Hence, furnish additional data asap, or face the firing sqad in the Tower of London.

1. Put a dollar figure on her income
2. What are her crown jewels worth? Put inches to her vital stats
3. Is she free...as in single?

Hurry up, boy!

Thanks Bonds for pointing to this!!

Most Nepali people who've been to the US for a while know who Sudha Shah is. She was honored in ANA Convention 2002 in DC for "Making Our Mark" as one Nepali who has made a mark in the US.

You guys Rastaman and Shuva Chintak must be FOB (Fresh off the Boat, so to speak) so I don't blame you for your ignorance.

You can see article about her by Fortune Magazine at http://www.fortune.com/fortune/careers/articles/0,15114,370202,00.html
Rastaman Posted on 06-Jan-03 08:14 PM

So you is saying making lots of money is like making them mark? What is the contribution to the society? What kind of Mark?
suva chintak Posted on 06-Jan-03 08:53 PM

Dear 007,
Pardon my ignorance, working for a Indian resturant 11 hours/six days a week, dere is no time to read da great magazine like Fortune...I and my people not just fortunate to do all dat readin. So we just plain ignorant folks.
But thanks a ton for enlightening I and fellow FOB Rastaman...you da man, SOB! with all dat smart knowledge, oh aren't you smart James Bond (as in Son of a Bond ... see the latest Austin Powers flick Goldmember to find out your paternity James! No time to read, but dere is a 14" cable above the sink where I do dem dishes for da Indian masta. Dis I call real perk...like Rastaman perks with da big busties in LA studio)

James, for all your smartness and born in the US pretensions, you still didn't answer the three questions? I am still waiting!

Rastaman Posted on 06-Jan-03 09:16 PM

Mr Bond think most Nepali mean them people who got money. Not I and I.I is askin what mark in dem society did she make? Makin money for herself and driving dem big car. I wonder who dem people at ANA honoring people with money.Them people never honored a taxi Driver who came from Solukhumbu and worked his way up to drive a taxi in a city like NY. Those are I and I who never even set foot in Kathmandu and made all the way in NY and could survive and support people. That is what is wrong with our politics and society. Maybe I dont know Sudha was from a poor family in Nepal gone to government school and came from a village with Nepali education and stuff. But for I the achievers are the brothers I meet day to day who worked up from da bottomless pit and they are the ones who have contributed back home. Jah Live!
jame bonds Posted on 06-Jan-03 10:39 PM

I don't think I want to respond to Rastaman's lunatic monologue, and I suggest noone respond to his sorry ravings either.

Suva Chintak, I apologize if I hit the wrong chord and hurt your ego. My posting was meant to praise the Nepalese beauty who has brains and cash to prove it. You can find out the answers to your questions in the link I posted above.

A forum such as this is for sharing interesting information. Noone knows everything. I don't blame my job at the indian restaurant for being ignorant about so and so important things happening in my community. But I come here to share what I see and learn from what I read.

In the spirit of sharing info,
Jame Bonds

Rastaman Posted on 06-Jan-03 10:47 PM

That is what I is saying. No one share them information about the brothers who have made progress that is leaps and bounds. Why you call I lunatic? I ask you what mark is that? Them people who have get them mark but not I and I. I see brothers making more mark in da society. That is what I and I is talkin about
Deepak Bista Posted on 07-Jan-03 12:03 AM

Hi folks,

Let us be more appreciative if some one provides information on Nepali peoples' achievement. It is nice to see people like Sudha Shah making a mark in Pradesh. We all should congratulate her in her achievement. Be they monetary, social, political, academic andy achievement is achievement.
Let us cheer these leaders be male or female, be kali or gori and kale and gore.
Congratulations Sudhaji, keep with the good work and wish you the best in future.

Rastaman Posted on 07-Jan-03 12:24 AM

Hey I is not saying anything bad or she didnt achieve anything. But what I is saying all along is them people only look at things that come with them money. I never seen anyone talk about Kirtiman Tamang. Probably nobody knows he. Or even at Present Tilak Ram Mahato. Those are the people who not only achieved something tremendous but contributed too. That is why I is talking about them and I.Our James Bond seems to do his bond work only associated with them money like the rest of them. That is why we are where we are. no one can argue on my point. Because truth can not be argued upon.
suman r dhakal Posted on 07-Jan-03 12:34 AM

Rastaman, I am surprised you know Tialk Ram Mahato. I know him very well. He lived inside the Biosphere II for about 6 months. About 7 scientists fromall around the world were selceted to conduct research inside the biosphere. Was there to welcome him when he got out. He is a wonderful person.
Rastaman Posted on 07-Jan-03 12:42 AM

That is what I mean. No one in Nepal or even here acknowledge this. That is a real achievement. Hey I is a Rastaman and I and I know a lot. Them people just talk and look for them money. They just forget them. See all them people in Nepal. All them people never talk about he cause he did not make any money.I know all these people who really did something really amazing specially when you see where they came from and what they did. So open your eyes and listen to I.

It is indeed a great achievement for our fellow country woman to succeed on the foreign soil. However, I have to disagree with 007 on one comment and am concenrned whether it is still a valid fact as times have changed.

First of all, you cannot say she is the highest earning Nepali female. There must be other Nepali women who earn higher or closer to what she earns. Secondly, the fortune article is dated June 2001. The article writes about her sales effort for year 2000. The market has changed radically since then. SAP is not doing so great anymore because of the market conditions and its competitors.

My point is, it is indeed a great to see a Nepali succeed. But we need to validate our facts before we start celebrating.
Bitchpatroll Posted on 07-Jan-03 08:49 AM

Grapes are definately sour if they are not yours
Man look at these pathetic people, the ones that are making the most noise are the very ones that are talking nothing else but the $$$. Typical Nepali mentality(cannot see your fellow nepali doing well). Can't you people just shut the fk up for a sec and appreciate what this Nepali WOMAN has achieved ? People like rastaman will always be bitchin cause they don't have the brains or the balls to achieve that kind of sucess(only thing they can do is read about it in the paper and make stooopid coments like above).
Jame Bonds Posted on 07-Jan-03 08:52 AM

Utopian, we need to give more attention to postings before we start scrutinizing it. For example, I wrote "Sudha Shah, possibly the biggest earning Nepali Female!"

'Possibly' means it is possible, or perhaps not. It does not mean that IT IS A FACT that she is the highest earning Nepali female.

Dude, I'm here to share interesting information, not teach you basics of English. You need to study English some more before you start complaining about what you think others meant.

Amen
VillageVoice Posted on 07-Jan-03 08:55 AM

Without belittling Sudha Shah and her wonderful achievement, I would like to thank
Rastaman for having raised some extremely valid points. As the Nepali community in the United States--and elsewhere--grows in size, it's natural for us, as any other immirgrant communities, to find role models for ourselves--and our children.

While it's important to honour movers and shakers of our community--Sudha Shah, for example--let's not forget that there are some solid backwater people, who have toiled tirelessly to give hundreds of Nepalis--literally--a footing in an alien world. Many of them don't hold attractive university degrees, high-profile jobs, or make xxx-figure salary. And they are not comfortable giving public speeches in big gatherings like ANA. (I know one person in New York City--but wouldn't name him, for he shuns publicity).

They are worth their weight in gold. And mind you, many Nepalis who got help from these people didn't have attractive university degrees, and they had to be assimilated into the new world from scratch. It's like making the baby walk, and taking pleausure in their little strides.

Help open bank accounts; explain how credit cards or phone cards work, finding odd jobs here and room partners there; interpreting for/standing by helpless new arrivals whenever they are in trouble -- with their visas/papers; finding public schools for their children, even occasionally rushing home to babysit for their parents (late from work?). The list is long.

Come on, let's not forget these unsung heroes. The community owes so much to these people, don't you think? They are the wind beneath our wings.

James Bond, my man,
No, you struck no wrong chord nor did you hurt no ego of mine. As I was telling you earlier, I work for one Indi masta. As such I am entitled to no ego, nor do I claim to own one. I guess ego is the preserve of those who work for the Effindis.

So no hurt was intended and none was received on my part, just a harmless banter over the lovely Ms Shah. I wonder what she would say if she heard that a veritable cyber duel is being waged over her brains/body/$$! (Working class snob that I am, I would be perfectly happy picking up the last two, and leave the first two dem big people with education, good english, and a lot of readin and readin.

And I have no intentions of denigrating her achievement...may she earn even more and become the women of the world and not just ANA. I am genuinely happy for her. It is just that some folks here don't know how to get onto a lighter note occasionally! Mostly dem people, as Rasta would say.

So James Bond, let us part in peace, I am sure we will get together for another laugh soon!
Now got to rush to fix that tan-toori chicken and chola-puri for the lunch crowd.

She deserved it.
Congratulation Sudha Jyu, once again!!!
Bitchpatroll Posted on 07-Jan-03 09:20 AM

Who is saying that you should not praise wind beneath your wings. But are we talking about wind beneath your wings here ? No. There is a time and place for everything. As they say in Nepali-- Agra Ko Kura garda Gagra ko kura Nagarau. In society everyone has their own place. They do deserve respect too. But you won't hear about them in Fortune Magazine. You may hear something like that in your community newpaper or social newspaper. This fking Ko Bhanda Ko Kum shit is what fks up our Nepali society. People have no respect.
VillageVoice Posted on 07-Jan-03 09:21 AM

No thanks, I'll pass. Shudder to think of a chicken drum-stick looking like an inflated sausage, if you catch the drift.

dear bitchpatrol:

you have been with sajha long enough, and you probably realize that the coversation here doesn't always follow a straight line. In fact, it's the occasional digressions from the initial posting that have driven the sajha mill over the years. I am only honoring the time-tested ways of sajha, my friend.

I haven't denigrated Sudha's aheivements. Far from it. And neither has rastaman or suva chintak as far as my understanding of their posting goes.

Sudha is a hardworking girl with a lot of spunk. I know her personally. Her ladder to corporate "success" did not hold a back up cable car, nor was the silver plate preceded by, being born with a silver spoon in her mouth!

I appreciate that she has come through and so far!
SITARA Posted on 07-Jan-03 11:34 AM

Suva chintak ji and Rastaman ji

You are right....the Fortune Magazine, People's magazines nor any tabloids for that matter define success!!! "Success", if measured by money, then perhaps the rest of us fall off the ladder into the stairwell....but, if measured by peace of mind, many more will be placed higher than those written in such glamourus news. It is all a matter of priority and perception!

Khaja-biscut,
You have a sinful wicked mind, Lord have mercy on this soul!

Tan-tauri was an innocent mistake on the key-board, dem learned folks call it 'Freudian slip' me thinks. Just thank your luvky stars I did not put a 't' in your chola-puri !

Village Voice, thank you sir for appreciating my humble attempts on the cyber chautari. I am new to the site, but I have enjoyed and learnt from your considered calls here, especially when things get a little heated every now and then.

Dear James Bond, I am glad we don't harbor any anger against each other from our humorous exchange here. I fight enough with our patrons here over the miserly tips, I need no more quarrels with my new found cyber pals. But let me assure you, I am not 'walloing' for working for da Indi masta instead of the Wall Street; neither am I "feeling sorry for my self", nor am I "humiliating myself" for the deadend job I am in. I have learnt to look at it very stoically...no regrets, no ambitions...that is my motto. There are many other worse things I could be doing, or not doing. How many of you went to study at the old TU in Kirtipur? Above one of the most foul urinals near the Department of Population Study, the great philosopher of our days had scrawled (name withheld for privacy) "Your future is in your hand." Your see dear James Bond, there has been absolutely no regrets...you simply live every day. You could say that was a kind of a radical paradigm shift for me.

But again, hats off to Village Voice and da great Rastaman for speaking up for the little guys. Yes, let us sing joyous hymns for the beautiful and apparently talented (if she got the buck she better be talented!) Ms Sudha Shah, but let us also keep in our mind the thousands who work nameless, facelsss in dis muglan to feed their families and send their children to school. These people don't have big degrees, fancy corporate office and fat checking accounts and all dat capitalist share options, but I known from up close that these brothers and sisters have da biggest heart of dem all! Come end of time, that is the only thing that matters...Fortune magazine, my foot!

I salute thee, Ms Shudha. But Mr. Bond, could you finally hurry up and send me the vital stats and let me know if she is free? The suspense is driving me nuts ( did I just say that I have no ambitions?). Or crap, my Masta giving me that "Gorkhey, your lunch break is over" look. Better get back to the salt mines, hope to read more interesting stuff when I get off in the evening!

Now I rush off to bring out the gulab jamun and rush-gullas for desserts...I hope you guys are ready!
Dil walon, phir milenga sam ko!
Garibjanata Posted on 07-Jan-03 01:08 PM

suva Chinatak dai,
I think Sudha didi is not 'free'. I heard that she married a Chinese guy 12-13 years ago but If they are still together or not that I don't know.
Jame Bonds Posted on 07-Jan-03 01:26 PM

Suva Chintak, I like your attitude of being satisfied where you're at. And I like your 'down with capitalism' attitude. Rastaman seems to share the 'down with capitalistic crap' attitude as well.

Let me try to understand you guys some more. What made to come to the US in the first place? US - being the height of capitalism. Love to hear your side of the story.
Rastaman Posted on 07-Jan-03 01:44 PM

Hey I is not down with capitalist atttitued. I is talking about them people. I is talking about them people like you who took I down. Like them your ministers who lied and suck the blood of I and I. Dont you understand that. Them people who put only their people on them work and left I and I to toil da land. I is talking about dem people like you who got them big houses not by capilastic means but by sucking da blood of I and I. By deceieving I and I. Them people who took them money from I and I and da airport. You want mo? You dont get it in you dem head?
Damodar Posted on 07-Jan-03 02:19 PM

Yes them give us big houses of theirs for I and I to look at in da kingdom . Them got them pajeros to run over I. Them people of yours got them nice italian shoes when I and I dont even have soles on my foot. Them people took all them money. Do you still deny the truth I tellin? Them people took my money that I earned working hard 12 hours a day in da foreign land so them people can send them chillun of theirs to get educasion in them foreign land.

Rastaman Posted on 07-Jan-03 02:59 PM

Them cant do nothing to Rasta. Them people gonna get it soon. You is the one we gonna get first. Cause them kill deserters first than enemies. Why do you want to misuse of them great name Lama? Cause you is not Lama. You might be that Lama them we find on da Andes.
Damodar Posted on 07-Jan-03 03:02 PM

Poor Rasta,
Do you even know what a BATTIMAN is ? Go ask yo Rasta cab driver frens what it means to be a BATTIMAN. Thats what you are. Them and Dis won't make you Rasta. What the hell are you sayin' ? kasiram Posted on 07-Jan-03 03:48 PM

Why you people so much against Rastaman? What has he done? I do not believe he has insulted anyone personally. He just speaks his mind. He is not like Anand Agrawal or Patel Singh. So what if he speaks for the little guys and takes different stands on issues. Rasta, don't give up buddy
jah Posted on 07-Jan-03 03:59 PM

That is what I is talkin about. I point my arrows to somewhere and these people get hurt cause these people are part of it. Them people just call I stupid cause I got none of them education. I is here to stay. Them cant bash I. Cause truth can not be bashed. Instead them people change da subject
suva chintak Posted on 07-Jan-03 05:30 PM

Oh my, much ink has flowed through Sajhapur since went out with dem ras gullas and lal jamuns.

Gribjanata bhai, thank you so much for lifting the veil of curiosity ... so the Lovely Ms Shah is taken. So I guess Chinaman beat me to the draw...a nett loss for Nepal, gain for China. Don't you think it is like the Bhrikuti story all over again? Nepal produces a good woman, and she gets taken either by the gentlemen from the north or the South! I am reduced to saying: "With neighbors like this, who needs enemies?" I guess I should solace myself by saying the better man got the prize! And what is dis about da divorce? I hope they are together...but if they did separate, I hope she got to keep her millions to her self. That could keep my ambitions warm for eons...Did Sitara say she knew this lady? If you do, please help me out here...after all, I can roll out some killer tandoori and gulab jamuns, I bet the Chinaman's Shanghai noodles are a walk-over.

James Bond, my man! I am glad we are on a good footing now. You ask for my jaundiced views on capaitalism. Well, here it is from the horse's mouth! I personally think the naked, unbridled, predatory capitalism is pure evil. I think we need a market system that is socially responsible where the bottom line is not the economic gospel. I like what the small Nordic states practice.

In America, the ideals of Capitalism seem to be corrupted by politics and degenerate folks like Enrons, WorldComs, and the Andersons. This is pure robbery, where the poor and hardworking people who are saving for their retirement or college are robbed by the big dem people (Rasta phrase) who control white house. Nothing happens to them!! At least Gupta, Khadga, Wagle get in custody in Nepal! I am sure you also don't support that kind of stuff, or do you?

And what is up with guys like Hangu Lama and side kicks? Guys, back off from our Rastaman. These guys have threatened him so much he is now having to travel under an alias - Jah - now! Let us have tolerance, for god's sake. Rasta brings an important voice to the discussion, we should respect that. And he is alway civil and polite to everyone, including his detractors.

Now, something about style: OK, so Rasta chooses a certain Jamaican lingo. But can we chase him out simply because his accent is dah and dem? Come to think of it, what we consider proper English (very few of us would qualify for that, certainly not me), this is not ours also. If we can choose to write like a White American English, why can't Rasta choose Eubonics or what ever? So let us not gloat on the fact that we speak ( or imagine to speak) White English, and simply because of that we have to denigrate someone who pretends to speak Black English! Come on folks, in learning to imitate English, we don't have to adopt their racial world view as well.

So da great Rasta, hope you revert to your earlier name. Jah, I understand not, dis new name no fun for your people here.

Dinner break, unfortunately, is over. Look forward to more interesting conversation when I make out of this palce tonight.

Spread the Rasta luv!
Garibjanata Posted on 07-Jan-03 06:14 PM

Suva Chintakdai,
I have more info about your"DREAMGIRL":She is married to that chinese noodle guy who has a degree from Standford and whose father is a Prof. at U.C.Berkeley.Please confirm this with Sitaradidi. Also she is as thin as a chinese noodle stick.
But,why are we talking about Sudha Shah?
SITARA Posted on 07-Jan-03 06:39 PM

Haha Suva Chintak ji

Great tongue-in-cheek humour and writing!

Yes...the lady is taken! :)

G-janta ji

Sir,

Wouldn't divulge such minute details, even if I knew !
czar Posted on 07-Jan-03 10:44 PM

Friends, Gorkheys, sajhabasis, lend me your monitors;
I come to praise Sudha, not to bury her.
The evil that others did tarnish this discussion;
The good she did is buried in innuendo.
Let it be this way with Sudha. The brute Rats-ah
Has told you that everyone feel guilty for your successes.
If that were true, it was a terrible fault,
And Nepal has paid for it terribly.
Here, with the cynicism of Rats-ah and the rest
(For Rats-ah is an honorable man;
So are they all, all honorable men),
I come to speak in Sudha’s praise.
She has brought many accounts home to SAP,
Whose orders delighted shareholders.
Did this seem unseemly for a Nepali woman?
Whenever companies floundered, Sudha responded;
Achievements shouldn’t be confined to the kitchen.
But Rats-ah says she should feel guilty;
And Rats-ah is an honorable man.
You all saw that on the Fortune 500
She was granted the honour but once,
Which She earned with talent, was this achievement?
But Rats-ah says she should be apologetic;
And surely he is an honorable man.
I am speaking not to disprove what Rats-ah said,
But I am here to say what I do know.
SAP loves her still, for good reasons.
What reason keeps you from applauding her, then?
O judgment, you have run away to blind rodents,
And some have become so jealous! Bear with me,
My heart soars with pride there with Sudha,
And I must pause until it comes back to me.

(With due apologies to William Shakespeare and/or Christopher Marlowe and executors of their estates.)
tick Posted on 07-Jan-03 11:53 PM

Sudha is a fine lady. I have respect for Sudha.
SITARA Posted on 08-Jan-03 05:13 AM

czar wah wah!!!

Nice! :)
Poonte Posted on 08-Jan-03 10:02 AM

Kyaaaaaaaaaa...CZAR at his finest! BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not that I am totally in congruence about your views of Rasta...
czar Posted on 08-Jan-03 12:25 PM

Poonte,

Its a huge disappointment to me that we could not gather, for once, in peace to celebrate with joy the phenomenal achievements of Sudha.

So the rastas of the world want to use this forum to express their frustrations and rage at the injustices borne by him and his, fine. This is a free forum, and as such they can blather to their heart's delight, till the server goes down, and he has every right to do so.

Dissonance per se is not what I object to. However, much as this may be a free for all, it behooves him and others to exercise some level of judgement. I reject the argument that the monstrous chip that some bear on their shoulders skew their vision so completely they are incapable of seeing reality. If so, they belong in a mental institution in the care of medical personnel, not running amok here.

Further, its unjustifiable to use real and imaginary injustices that took place half way round the globe to rationalize their present behaviour. Such people need to grow up and take responsibility for their actions.

That is the crux of my message and I used poetic license, very liberally in this case, to make my point. It does, of necessity, address all naysayers in general, not specifically one person.

Then again, who am I to take issue with the wisdom of one who singlehandedly put Rogaine into disrepute while adding Fruit of the Loom to the fantasies of Sajhapur femme fatales?

Cheers !
Suna Posted on 08-Jan-03 01:22 PM

Czar
Wasn't the fruit of the loom at all but the fruit himself :)!
The underwear was just a coverup was all!
Poonte Posted on 08-Jan-03 03:05 PM

ehehehe…the days of Rogaine are long gone! It didn’t work. Now I have resorted to Ayurvedic “kapal jharna rokine” SILKEN shampoo and tonic :)

Pardonez-moi, Czar, if I too seemed unappreciative of Sudha’s marvelous achievement. I was not aware, shamefully, may I add, of Rasta’s criticisms of her, if there were any. However, my empathy towards RASTA’s ways does not emerge from his criticisms of Sudha, rather it comes from the issues that his postings seem to raise, either intentionally or not. I too am getting annoyed at the overdone Jamaican-wanna-be lingo and all the “dis and dat” crap, even though I enjoyed it much in the beginning. Nevertheless, I do not think it is wise to completely ignore the essence of the message just because I do not like the ways of the messenger.

We cannot deny the fact that much of the “them” people enjoy affluence at the expense of the “I” people in today’s world. There are, as RASTA himself had pointed out in one of his postings, some genuinely hard-working people who deserve what they achieve, be it monetarily or otherwise. Nevertheless, we cannot ignore the plight of the majority of the poor who are oppressed, whose blood have been mercilessly sucked in order to further enrich the already-rich. It is the voices of these oppressed, who have been unfairly treated, that I hear in RASTA’s ramblings. No, I am not a Commie; but I think much balanced ways of capitalism would be easier to swallow.

Did someone mention that RASTA is a Madhesi? If so, I blame ourselves, the Pahadis and all other non-Madhesi Nepalis, for making him what he is—ever paranoid and skeptical of the system. The blatant and the most cruel form of racism against the Madhesis have been a fact of life for generations in Nepal. How many of us “Pahade” youths recall stealing nariwals and suntalas from their tokaris while calling them “MAC***NE MADSYA”? Or was it not racism and cruelty at its height when someone threw all sorts of most demeaning galis at the risha-walas in the Terai instead of paying them the fare? I never witnessed such cruelty directed against the “Pahade” riksha-walas of Kathmandu, albeit very few of us ride rikshas in the valley. While there may have been only a few who committed those nasty malice, almost all of us quietly laughed at them thinking “khuching, Madsya,” didn’t we? It would have been a crime even if we thought it was just a joke. Of course, the occasional anomalies aside--and my Palpali dhaka topi off to those who never fell into any of these categories.

We did wrong. We are still doing it wrong—either by denying what we have been doing, or by not even contemplating corrections to what we did. Now, the onus is on us, the victimizers, to make it right, not the victims!

Still pondering the ways to get rid of that stain on my Fruit of the Loom undie…lemme bhago now! eheheh……
suva chintak Posted on 08-Jan-03 03:27 PM

czars of the world:

As one of your 'rastas of the world', I suspect you are creating a strawman to launch your poetic career. Neither Rastaman, nor anyone else in this thread has denied Shudha Shah's achievements...I for one certainly rejoice in her success. The only other issue raised was that the Nepali diaspora in the US should also think about honoring/recognizing the good work done by ordinary Nepalis here besides looking up to the mega success stories like Ms Shah...like dishing out tandoori delights every day, six days a week. Why is a harmless suggestion to respect small people such a crime that it intives the righteous wrath of the czars of the world? Maybe it is a no brainer...for the czars of the world, all power and glory is theirs, the very idea of honoring a little man is pure repungence.

The way I see it, both the Sudhas and Rastas of this world can live together respectfully, one need not denigrate the other just to be on top of the heap!

Dear GJ Bhai,
My interest in Shudha Shah was purely altruistic. A rich and beautiful Nepali cheli beti wandering alone in the big bad city, who knows how many unsavory characters are out there lurking in the shadows to pounce upon a unsuspecting sidha-sadha kanya from the distant mountains. But since you tell me she is well protected by Jackie Chang's cousion, I rest my worries for her. Our cheli is in able hands.

What's that burning smell? Hare Shiva, es jindagime kitne kitne papad belne padte hain! Off to the Kitchen,
So peace, in a hurry!
czar Posted on 08-Jan-03 03:44 PM

Poonte,

Again, I stress, Sudha did the collective proud. That celebration was marred. Therein lies my annoyance.

At no point have I denied or implied that rasta's grievance are baseless or illegitimate. I have not mentioned anything even remotely in this regard. Let this be clear before this discussion gathers any more steam.

If, in matter of fact, rasta choose to enter this and every other thread in this forum, and for that matter cover every square inch of space in the known universe, with his grievances, thats his choice to make.

I do choose to spend some moments of joy in contemplation of worthy accomplishments of my fellow men. I refuse to focus exclusively on rasta's pain and the wrongdoings of generations past and present. And thats what he would have us do: focus on him, to the exclusion of everything else.

No ceegar.
SITARA Posted on 08-Jan-03 04:03 PM

I agree with CZAR...

Applauding one person's achievement does not necessarily have to translate into denigrating/belittling another's achievements or identities!

And as for Rasta's lamentations... I do not know where they stem from nor do I know where they are leading to: From King Soloman to a separate country for Israel...or from freedom to grow marijuana or back to the buffalo soldiers!
Well, whatever it is ...I don't see it fitting into the equation of one hardworking Nepali woman's "success" as the media calls it!....

Can we allow her that much? without having a negative parrallel thought running? Can we for one moment be grudgeless????????

Can I even stop tripping.... about thinking that people can accept graciously another's efforts....not necessarily her monetary success????????

Ya!!!
surya Posted on 08-Jan-03 04:26 PM

Czar, ramro lekdo rahecha!

As for success stories.... American hos ya Nepali... I have always felt that it is great to recognize and celebrate individual successes whether it is that someone made a ton of money and gained fame selling software to Fortune 100 companies or whether someone worked hard to save money to send home so the whole family can have enough to survive and flourish.

Suva Chintak ji, diss all them czars of the world, but hamro Sajha ko naya kabi Czar lai kina ni!? Look at the Mr. Rasta first!

To the Rastaman fans of Sajha... please have some mercy on the rest of us and stop romanticizing and talking about this wannabeeeeee! Sally asked somewhere when does someone graduate from being a wannabe to just "being." In the case of our fake-Jamican-accent-totin', ganja smokin', big booboo loving, divisive Nepali keta who calls himself RASTAMAN, my answer is NEVER!! Never is this fako going to "be" a real rastafarianl!!

To borrow the words of the Czar:

"Friends, Gorkheys, sajhabasis, lend me your monitors;
I come not to praise Rasta, but to bury him."

(disclaimer: this is just a joke. I have no real intention of burying the fake rasta for real!)
whine and chij Posted on 08-Jan-03 04:37 PM

is making a big falcon poop a significant enough "individual achievement" to warrant celebrating? let's pottttttty, hottie!

czar ko kabita reminds me of my school days ( i did try that one on stage)....poonte dai has raised some HELL BURNING TRUTH, i have to agree with suva chintak, and agree with surya too.ehehe.........gosh what a dilemma...

I do feel rastaman's sentiments, but now isn't it getting too redundant bhanya? even too much sugar tastes bitter hoina ra?

As far as Sudha Shah is concerned, NA AAPKA NA BAAPKA for me......so neither I need to applaud her, nor I need to point a finger at her..:)

no pun intended anyway ;)

Sitara,
Thank you for the sanity check. The epitome of savoir faire.

Suva Chintak,
I have read with enjoyment your thoughts in other threads. It is with disappointment I see your taunts and snide remarks here. Without so much as the foggiest notion as to what I stand for, you've elected yourself judge, jury and executioner. Such hubris.

As far as poetic aspirations go, indeed, sir, I must thank you for thinking me worthy to even possess such aspirations. Might I request you to have a word with the resident Poet Laureates in this regard ? They will surely dispel your misguided notions on this.

Unlike the hoi polloi you allude I am a part of, I assure you that I know what it feels like to be seared by bias and casteism. That, however, is not something I choose to parade around here. Rent seeking based on past prejudices is reprehensible to me.

In the struggle for justice and equality, I have fought long and hard. I choose not to trumpet those achievements here, or anyplace else for that matter. I seek neither fame, glory or the oft false and very fickle admiration of the masses. That sir, I leave to you, if such is indeed your ambition.

If, however, as a gentleman and a scholar, you seek to widen your understanding of the diverse and knowledgeable personalities here, I welcome you aboard and anticipate your worthy contributions.
suva chintak Posted on 08-Jan-03 05:13 PM

The old gem of Nepali wisdom says: kuro ra kulo jata lage pani jancha. There is another one with the same morale, but with a potential for naughtness: haad nabhako jibro jatalage pani huncha.

So is with da present thread...it began with something simple, but now it has brought forth very complex issues. Two of these issues I want to raise here relate to identity and authenticity. Allow me to elaborate:

Yes, Rastaman tries to speak/write like a Jamaican.
So that supposedly makes him a wannabe, a fake, unreal, inauthentic. How can a Nepali/Gorkhey/Janajati/Madhise be a Jamaican Rastafarian?

And there are the rest of us who are also Nepali/Gorkhey/Madhise/Janajatis.
However, we are real, we are authentic because we write proper White English (or so we hope and pretend).

So conclusion is: When a Nepali practices Jamaican English (or tries, with various degrees of success and failure), he is a fake.

But when the same Nepali practices White English, he can be authentic and real.

What is the essence in White English that it should automatically validate the identity of a Nepali?

The second question that I have is: are people angry with Rastaman for what he says or for how he says? These are very different issues.

If we can parody Shakespeare here to make a point, what is wrong in parodying Bob Marley to make a different point? Or do we consider Shakespeare some holy cow that validates anything that is said in his name? I am just curious about the underlying/subconscious connections between language, class, and race.

These are just loud thinking, with malice to none and luv to all!
czar Posted on 08-Jan-03 07:15 PM

Poonte, I agree full well with your thoughts on the rage of the rasta's of this world. I have been an involuntary witness of it, and it was always a painful experience.

I raised my voice against such practices and have faced hostility for doing so. Followed quite often with the well worn: 'yo Nepal ho, Amrika haina, yehan esto chaldaina. Eeni harulai yeso garena bhaney tauko maa chadihaalcha, ani bholi nai haamilai ghar baar biheen garidincha.'

It fired up a fury at people's willingness to treat another so callously. An often vocal critic of such, I have even foolishly got into fisticuffs over it. The public beating of one's wife by a drunken husband is treated by most passersby as 'testai ho, sandhai jhagada garchan tini haru, wasta nagara, kaami hun.'

It is easy to be innured to the pain and injustice meted out to others. Yet, all were not silent spectators I assure you. There were quite a few of us who did more than watch.
suva chintak Posted on 08-Jan-03 09:44 PM

Dear Czar,
Please forgive me for any unintended hurt...let me assure that non was intended. I and I was only in this thread to make a little more space for some harmless banter in Sajhapur's serious and earnest tone. I am surprised by the tone of your last posting.

You accuse me of 'hubris'; playing 'judge, jury, executioner'; that I have used 'taunt and snide remarks.' I don't know why you say this. If you go back to my postings, I have been saying all along that Ms Shah's achievements make us all proud. Later, I also join people like Rasta who are saying that we should also start to recognize the contribution of everyday heroes--both men and women. Why or how does this suggestion belittle or dilute the collective celebration for Sudha Shah? If anything, it should only add lusture to her achievement because she now forced us to think of other people who are less fortunate than her.

You accuse me of 'taunts and snide remarks.' Where did you see that? Instead, in your poem, you have used the words like "evil", "brute", "blind rodents", "jealous", and "metal institutions" in reference to the 'Rastas of the world.' I am sure a person of your stature did not mean it, perhaps they were there as testament of your wit and humor.

If I was really angry, which is rare, I might accuse you of being an elitist, but there is simply no way I would ever accuse you of being dem 'hoi polloi.' A czar can never be part of the ordinary crowd (here I am tongue-in-cheek!)

And you also berate me of not knowing your past credentials in a site where most of us use pseudonames. On this account, I stand guilty as accused. And I salute you for all you have done on behalf the downtrodden people, including the fisticuffs. Despite all our high moralising and righteousness on the cyber pulpit, very few of us will ever raise our eyebrows to all the small and large acts of injustices and cruelty in this world. I respect you for walking the walk, as they say. It is just unfortunate that a person who has done so much to raise his voice against all forms of injustices should be loathe to indulge Rastaman's 'voice'. Sometimes the best deeds we can do to others/helpless is to simply listen to them without prejudging them. This I think is how we acknowledge the other's dignity and humanity.

So in this spirit, I seek your forgiveness in earnest for any and all errors on my part. Hope to join you in more discussions on this forum without further misunderstandings.
Peace!
czar Posted on 08-Jan-03 10:12 PM

Unless Ms. Shah spreads her wealth to improve life around her through philanthrophy, she remains just another rat in the rat race.
Suna Posted on 09-Jan-03 07:50 AM

Yeah khaja biscuit, I totally agree with you and THUS, the damn king doesn't move an INCH of his ana to another charity, he is just another rat in the rat race! But then, look at all of us - RATS!
I wonder if there is a gender twist to all this! Are you guys being vicious towards Ms. Shah's achievements because not a whole lot of you can boast of the same feat she can??
Czar, not that I was invited to the round table to clink glasses but I believe there should be another round ON ME on behalf of all Nepalese women who have made it! INCLUDING those of us who never made it to the Fortune 500!
:)
khaja biscuit Posted on 09-Jan-03 07:54 AM

Sunaji, my comment is gender-neutral. It would apply equally to Ms. Shah, Mr. Shah and those in-between. Have a break; have a khaja biscuit.

Okay, I got the rotgut all set up! But some might choose whine and chij instead. Regardless, it's a time to pottttttttttyi hotties! And would any of you like some Khaja Biscuit with that?

hehe

Guys, let's bury the hatchet (to use the contemporary American English vernacular). To each his/her own, right! I admit to my self-righeosness on many an issue. We are entitled to our biases, ingnorances and idiosyncracies. And why not! Who cares! in the end... just as long on we are not being mean, underhanded and divisive.

And in the end hard as it may be for some to believe, not everyone aspired to be a rich and make a ton of money. Some people might try and fail to join Fortune 500 companies; other might have wanted to join the legions of doom (those who know what I am talking about "know", others can guess) and not gotten in; still there are many, who simply choose to lives pursuing a different ideals, making difference in samll ways, going about in their small enterprises. But whatever it is, I have to remind myslef that most live their lives doing their bit, leading meaningful, productive and happy lives without the fame and glory; and those are the people who really change the world! Because without the critical mass of oridinary GOOD people, what good is going to prevail in the world? kaso (la that was my little stint on the soapbox for the day!) :)

People have different priorities in life and I think it would be wonderful for us to try and step outside of our little circumscribed views on the world and see the big picture. And laugh! I have to remind myself to do that frequently!:)

Toodles Kaboodles Shajahite! have a good day! and remember it ain't not over till the fat lady sings!!

ahem! since I am seriously trying to get in shape, I will not be playing that role this time!! :)

It seems like some of you have misconstrued my empathy for RASTA ways to mean that I too am critical of Sudha-jyu’s achievement. Hence, for the purposes of better clarity, I have now deemed it necessary to address the two issues—one on Sudha-jyu, and the other on RATSAMAN-jyu—separately on their respective threads. Please find my further comments on RASTA, if you still care, on “Enough of Dis and Dem Crap.”

On Sudha-jyu…

Haina, maile ramrari bujhauna nasakya ho ki manis harule malai ramrari bujhna nasakya ho? Ma ta confusion ma double confused! eheheh…jhan testari lekhidya ho mathi shurumai…khai tyo lines…"Pardonez-moi, Czar, if I too seemed unappreciative of Sudha’s marvelous achievement. I was not aware, shamefully, may I add, of Rasta’s criticisms of her, if there were any. However, my empathy towards RASTA’s ways does not emerge from his criticisms of Sudha, rather it comes from the issues that his postings seem to raise, either intentionally or not."

Yani ki…yadi RASTAMAN-jyu le ni Sudha-jyu ko apahelana gareko bhaye, ra maile bhulchuk le tyo nadekhya bhaye, maafi paam. Tara, maile Sudha-jyu ko kahile ni samalochana gareko chhuina, ra kahile ki garne chhaina—wahan prasansha-yogya hunuhunchha bhanne kura ma mero kunai asahamati chhaina. Mero ni koti koti pranaam wahan lai, ani aru pani bideshi bhumi ma Nepali naam chamkaune mahanubhav harulai—mahila hos ya sajjanbrindh.

eheheh…aba ta cleeeeyar bho ki, hajur haru? Kura milyo jasto chha…hajur haru, ra ma, hami sabai Sudha-jyu ka prasanshakari…

Aja Bihibar paryo…bholi kaam hola…aba bholi Shukrabar beluki aam, Czar tapai ko ma? Aek sisi Scotch ra dui pathi chhoila liyera…khamla, pimla, matamla, ani geet-seet gamla…"Discuss garera gayo hami dui ko adhi umera…”"eheheh geet ni kasto ryai ma thyai milya bhanya ni—me 47, you 47 and a half!

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiii…bharkharai utheko hijo raat bhari ko kaam pachhi…chharlangai khulyo nindra ni…mero "F of da L" kattu kata parechha?

Correction: More on RASTAMAN on "I and them," not on "Enough of dis and dem crap." :)

Rastaman Posted on 10-Jan-03 02:38 PM

Dude! what is wrong with you guys? Money means everything to you? Only after money . That is why our people and country is suffering. Jah Live
Damodar Posted on 10-Jan-03 02:53 PM

Rasta,
Did you check with your frens if you are a Battiman then ? Are you a Battiman ? Do you know the true meaning of Jah and where it came from ? And how reggae got started ? or are you a NAM MATRA KO RASTA ? NA GHAR KO NA GHAT KO Hoina ra ?
As they say MONEY TALKS BULSHIT WALKS
Rastaman Posted on 10-Jan-03 02:58 PM

Dear Damodar you was not even born when I and I was livin there. So shut up Punk. You probably them young college kid. You go and ask Pemba , Subarna and Vikram
Ever heard of the Diamonds? Ever heard of back to earth show? So my friend I and I got you by them ba--s. As for money that is why I and I got screwed by them Wagle and them your ministers. You is one of them. Bloody 52
suva chintak Posted on 10-Jan-03 02:58 PM

Rastaman,
Welcome back brother, but where did you leave your Rasta-speak? It doesn't sound the same without the I & I and dem and dis.

Let a thousand flowers bloom!
Rastaman Posted on 10-Jan-03 05:31 PM

Thanks Suvachintak. It is good to be back. I and I is da only one with vision and them truth. Some people here did not want to hear them truth anymore because them are them people. Rasta is here to stay! Bring down babylon!
suva chintak Posted on 10-Jan-03 05:52 PM

Yes, Rasta, that is the spirit!
Rastaman Posted on 10-Jan-03 06:20 PM

Suvachintak tell I what is wrong with our young generation.Like Bond and Damodar who thinks like money is everything. And believes in Money Talks. Dont they realize that is what them people did making a mockery of Democracy in Nepal? I and I feel pity for the new generation. And all thos people who considers making a lot of money for yourself is making a mark in a society. As I have said before there are great achievers . I know some nepali Doctors who have done revolutionary work on their respective fields but never heard them people saying what a mark they made. Thanks Suvachintak Rasta lives!
khaja biscuit Posted on 10-Jan-03 09:24 PM

Rasta, stop saying money is not important when your landlord Khaja biscuit too cruises on sajha. I have yet to get your rent for January.
khaja biscuit Posted on 10-Jan-03 09:28 PM

Rasta's great saying: >>I know some nepali Doctors who have done revolutionary work on their respective fields
Rasta's great example: Baburam Bhattarai is one Nepali doctor who has done revolutionary work.
Jah Posted on 10-Jan-03 10:40 PM

I did not mean them doctors. I mean doctors that are not them. You dont understand or what?
VillageVoice Posted on 10-Jan-03 11:12 PM

dear Rasta.

rastai badlana hineko manchhe kati chhito risayeko? Go on, fren.

Hi Poonte, been following you closely. I am pretty much with you on this one.
bhedo Posted on 11-Jan-03 08:00 AM

Mmmm...Sudha Shah, she's damn pretty, I tell ya. I met her at ANA convention. But she smokes too much, which I find very repugnant.
Jah Posted on 11-Jan-03 09:51 AM

Yes from da picture she looks very beautiful lady like some of them ladies of Rastaman. But if she got them locomotive breath Rasta would be happy just with dem pictcha. Cause them people smell bad. Oh! them peoplal smell real bad in da mornin. But them peopal wid them money can buy them good good smell to put on them body.
paramendra Posted on 12-Jan-03 03:38 PM

I admire Sudha Shah's not being your stereotypical doctor, engineer, economist, and still making a splash.

800,000 dollars is more like a wave than splash, but never mind.
dirk Posted on 12-Jan-03 04:01 PM

I think 800K is more like a tsunami.....go girl go!!!
Jah Posted on 12-Jan-03 05:08 PM

800,000 you call dem tsunami? What you call them our ministers and Sachivs. Them get that much not in one year but in them one day.And them dont have to talk long like Sudha. Them good peopal does with just a couple of sentences. No no no no way Sudha is Tsunami. Them your ministers are. Cant beat them!
suva chintak Posted on 12-Jan-03 06:18 PM

This 800K ! Wow, man, for a guy making 7 dolla/hr from the Indi masta, this amount sounds almost vulgar. But, more power to Sudha sista.

Me not understand one thing: Was dis 800K before the dot.com crash or afta? For Sudha's sake, I hope it was the afta thing!

Rastaman, earthly wisdom as usual: That 800k is small change for our Mantis and Sachivs. Heard from one Baluwataare that Koirala used to have one Boeing 757 for breakfast, but his daughter used to prefer to have a Lauda for a midnight snack.

You Rastaman, you hear dem stories too?
noname Posted on 12-Jan-03 06:27 PM

It's great to learn that this thread is still alive :(
Jah Posted on 12-Jan-03 07:00 PM

Yes them people who love them money and would sell da country for da money. It goin no where.
mekha khatri Posted on 13-Jan-03 10:44 AM

Ussssssssss! ma ta confiujma pare hajur kun sudha ho janna sakchhu?
sks Posted on 13-Jan-03 02:23 PM

LOL....
Suva ji, u're one hilarious son-of-a-gun. U and Rasta make quite a pair!

I dont mean to spoil your fun, but it strikes me as a little odd that u manage to post on sajha so profusely despite your Indi mastah breathin down your neck. Takin' a lotta smoke breaks, r we? By the way, my naan looks like somebody stepped on it but give my compliments to the chef anyway cuz the jhinga masala is to die for!
Rastaman Posted on 13-Jan-03 02:56 PM

Hey Sks Rasta dont work fo no Indian Mastah. Them peopal learned all from da Indian peopal. Rasta work fo dem Korean Masta who neva lie to I. Him neva deceieve I. Him mya masta dont breath down on I .Him just come in fo five minutes and tells I to finish that small job of 14 hours in ten hours. Him nice Korean Masta.
suva chintak Posted on 13-Jan-03 03:12 PM

sks,

say no more, broda!
But welcome aboard, sir. Any pretext to get back to Sajhapur and be part of this lively company...people like Rasta and you who can laugh with others, but most importantly at themselves also, makes life worth living. I tell you, odorwise life be too dull.

And I will certainly pass your compliments on to the Harip Sing and tell him to watch where he steps on.... But to be fair to the Punjabi, the poor chap doesn't have much choice either, it is either the nan or the parotha! You should see the size of the tan-toori room, it is no large than a dorm fridge.

Would love to see move of you around here! Oops, here comes the masta!
sks Posted on 13-Jan-03 03:54 PM

Rasta, before u and jah label me too as one of dem and dem, plz allow me and myself to explain my and mine little snippet earlier about da Indi mastah.......that was actually directed towards suva and suva. No harm done though. Your Korean Mastah sounds like a nice guy....his managemant skills reek of da Ivy League.

Suva, I am disgusted to know that your chef takes the naan and the parotha to the men's restroom. And then he steps on em! He could at least have refrained from steppin on em!
Rastaman Posted on 13-Jan-03 04:06 PM

I and I earn da honest livin. I and I work fo da good korean masta . But them peopal deceieve I. Long live Korean Masta. Early die them peopal.
