Grammy nomination is out. * Is Norah Jones really that good? Her mix of Jazz and Pop is good, but she has gotten so many nominations just because of one song? * I am sure, the 8 Mile boosted Eminem's chances of getting the Grammy, but its weird to see 'the Boss' and Eminem in same category. * John Mayer for best new artist? Doesn't he sound too much like Dave Mathews? * I am sad not to see Audio Slave in the major nominations, they should've been given best new band. Again, where is Coldplay? Comments? |

>>>Norah Jones, never heard of her song in the radio, but MTV. And I always switched the channed whenever that song was on. Isn't there some connection with that song and the Daughter of Ravi shankar, Anushka Shankar?? I am not sure. >>>Eminem will grab bunch of grammys this year for sure. One and 1/2 SUPERHIT album is not a JOKE. haven't seen the nomination list yet, but is Christina Aguiluera's "Beautiful" nominated?? she deserves to win for that song, BUT THE VIDEO sucks. So does PINK and NO DOUBT. >>>I seriously thought "your body is a wonderland" song was sung by Dave Mathews, until I saw the video. The song is okay, but that Guitar rhythm just hooked me up. Doesn't that rhythm sounds much like nepali rhythm?? No doubt, haamro great maadaley dai "NuchcheJYU" will play that rhythm in Madal. Such a cool rhythm. I love that song for the guitar rhythm. >>>waiting from Grammy, SUPERBOWL and OSCAR>>> :) |

Maybe Sheryl Crow will win one. As may Alan Jackson for his Sept 11 song. |

Grammy's are for Blind people. People who don't know what music is but would rather go by what the industry provides you. There is sooo many Genre breaking music out there that are 1 times better than what the main stream music provides you. The underground music scene is the Real Grammy I would say cause they are the ones that define whats cool. Music industry just follows. Like they did when the whole electronca became popular in the early to mid 90's. But music Industry did not know where to put them. Seeing that small labels like tom and Dick was making soo much money they jumped the band wagon. Thats when artists like Maddona, Nsync, Britney started grabbing all of those Electronic music producers for the mass. All of a sudden Everyone from Cher to J-z to Jlo started putting out electronic fusion music using Samples. At the moment Garage Rock is in with the likes of Strokes, Vines, White stripes. Another scene that is really picking up is the Mod scene. If you don't know what Mod is Go check out Saturdays at Axis. They seem to be on every fashion magazine. As for current Dance trend the in thing at the moment is Electroclash- mixing two opposite types of music and creating a sound of your own. Grammy's suck major. Its the Music industry's version of what you should be listening not what you want to listen. |

Norah Jone's connection with Anushka Shanker? Didn't know that.. it is very likely though. I wisht these pop genres with the likes of Brittany, Christina won't win anything. Bitchpatroll, you're looking only from the perspective of an audience. Look from the perspective of a performer too, its not only to guide the listeners but also to reward the performers. Garage Rock eh? Heard of Grunge, but Garage? I think that phenom had started decades back, its hot again? Heard of Vines but nobody else. Good info. |

IF i am not mistaken, Norah Jones is ALSO the daughter of Mahan Ravi Shankar, second amrikan wife baata ho kyare..... but personally, PP, ANuskha Sankar rocks with sitar hai eheh........I happened to attend one of her concerts here last semester.......In the show, she was a'rite, after the show, ma ta twaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ni !! eheh... About grammys, i reluctantly have to agree with Bitchpatroll, they only show us what they want us to see.....damn this dem and I is catching on me ..GOD SPARE "I" eheh. oys |

Norah is Ravi's Daughter. But she does not want to publicise it. I don't thinkthe performers would get any better reward than performing in front of their live audience. That connection cannot be compared to any plaque or award. And who are these old farts making the decision- who gets what, and who belongs to what genre ? Do you really think they can see whats going on in the streets ? They'd rather read magazines, newpapers to find out what's going on ? And can we really trust the media providing the info ? Throw them a bundle of $$ and they will sing praises about your music till Kingdom come. There are shit loads of great music out there but because the record companies cannot make enough $$$ off of them they do not get any publicity. Cause the Record Companies want to throw their large bundles of $$ to promote their artists. And people that are not signed to big record companies do not get any exposure at all no matter how good they are. Grammy is a MONOPOLY controlled by people in the music business. Its all about $$$ and kissing ass. |

DWI, thanks for bringing Norah Jones into light, I had once written almost a page and a half about the then upcoming singer and was thinking of posting it here but too bad my pc crashed and I didn't feel like re-writing the whole thing again so there ended my piece on Norah Jones. I love anything that has to do with Blues and Jazz. From Ella Fitzgerald to Billy Holiday to Miles Davis, I've been fascinted by that genre of music and musical talents. I was at work one day when I heard this deep husky voice singing I waited 'til I saw the sun I don't know why I didn't come I left you by the house of fun I don't know why I didn't come I don't know why I didn't come When I saw the break of day I wished that I could fly away Instead of kneeling in the sand Catching teardrops in my hand After I went home I searched for more info about this singer on the Internet and found out that she was the estranged daughter of Pandit Ravi Shankar from his American wife. Anyway, I quickly bought her CD after listening to her other songs from her website www.norahjones.com. All the songs in her first album Come Away With Me are very melodic and good to listen to especially during long drives. For a newcomer, I feel that she's tremendously talented. Not only does she have a beautiful voice that could bring her on a par with the likes of legendary singers like Ella Fitzgerald,Billy Holiday and Aretha Franklin but also, with continuous selection of good lyrics and music, I think this girl can go great lengths. She already has. Two current movies Maid in Manhattan and Two weeks notice have used her songs one of them even shows her singing part of her song. I think she deserves a Grammy. Whether she'll get it or not Norah will always be my favorite! |

Norah is locked in for the grammy, I am sure. Thanks for the info in Norah Jones Dilasha,Bitch_Patrol and Oys. Makes me enjoy her song more. I was sold by her video, which is the simplest as can be, almost going along with her pitch. Look forward to more info on Norah, Dilasha, if you have any. |

PremPujari lai ta NewYorker ko saino lagekole kehi nabhanya ni. By the way, I was surprised not to see AudioSlave mentioned in any category, atleast best video? The lead vocal is from the SoundGarden (Chris) and rest of the players are from the Rage Against the Machine. If you haven't heard them, goto www.audioslave.com and click on video at the bottom of the screen. If you have Quickplayer you can see it by following this link: http://audioslave.com/video/cochisefullvid_ref.mov |

Adioslave- did not get nominated because they did not release their record on time for Grammy's to reveiw. Besides they sound too much like Rage sans Zach. Chris's voice sounds better with tracks like Balck hole sun(soundgaaden). Again you have to play by Grammy's rule to get that award. You may have the best lyrics and music but if you don't play by Grammy's rules you don't get the award. My point is Good Music is good music regardless whether music industry recognizes it or not. Thats why they suck major. One of the local Bands that are on the verge of sticking big is Interpol(NYC Locals play Middle east quite frequently). Another one I thats local is Lifestyles that have similar sound. I'd rather support these guys who are trying to make it big. Boston probably has one of the biggest Indie Scenes. There are a lot of bands out there because of all the college kids(college town). If people are really into music they should check them out instead of listening to what the radio wants you to listen. |

Finally, finally, sajahpur has a chance of actually being a civilization. We are discussing Jazz. Here ?? Stop the presses !!!! At one time, the sales of Jazz held near 70% of the US market. Today it hovers around 8%. If Norah generates enough of a buzz to get people interested in Jazz and eventually bring forth more artistes to pursue this genre, I, for one, will light a candle in her honor. Hell, I'd light 108 lamps. Norah's spare musical style is interesting but not compelling. She is a major talent, unarguably, yet Cassandra Wilson can take her on a bad day. As good as Ella ? Not by a running mile. However, at this point, anyone can insist on anything they want, I ain't arguin. It just feels so damn good to be even discussing it here. For those interested, check out Morcheeba and Nnenna Freelon. Diana Krall and Diane Schuur can hack it too. Norah Jones is a welcome voice in what to me sometimes feels like a musical drought. |

Hey Czar, Morcheeba is touring if you are interested they are coming to Boston on the the 25th Jan at Avalon. If you like Morcheeba check out Lamb, Emiliana Torrini, Mulu, Moloko, Dot Allison, Purple Penguins, Static Sound System, Gold frapp, Bent, St. Etienne, EBTG, Ollano, Marshmellows, The Gotan Project, Bebel Gilberto, Suba, Baby Namboos, Alpha, Baxter, Estero Etc etc. . They all fall under the same Genre. I am going for sure. Last time they came into town they were still fairly new(they had just released their 2nd album). It would be interesting to see in which direction they have progressed for their latest album(they just released a new one & they are touring to support that album). |

Hmmm, critical acceptance of Norah by Czar. Bitchpatroll, are u somekind of a music producer or something? If not you should contact one, they are looking for talent scouts all the time. You should be named local musicpatrol, than Bitchpatroll. But that is way too mainstream for us. Too much local and ghetto. As you said, music should be free and Grammy shouldn't direct the choice of music, we also want music to come to us, we don't wanna go looking for it. Keep us updated though, Bitchpatroll. U're doing good. |

BP, thanks for the heads up. A Senegalese artist Youssou N'Dour that caught my attention some time ago. An established African star, he's been noticed by the European set too. To the extent that BBC very recently used him to kick off their 70th Birthday musical celebrations. He sings in French, English and Wolosi (a native tongue for him), and has a penchant for switching between them mid song. The rhythms and tonal plays are often scintilating. Vivian Ndour is worth listening to as well, even though I've experienced on a very small sample of their music. What I've heard, I've enjoyed. Dilasha, you may want to have a go at it too. S'il vous plait. |

http://www.astralwerks.com/ Czar, If you like Y'sou check Femi Kuti as well. Great Afro-funk wit a lotta horns. Good to groove with soothing voice. So is Alpha Blondy from Ivory coast good Rock Steady musique. ASTRALWERKS(record Label) just put out an excellent North African Music Compilation put togather by Damon(BLUR) cause they were out there recording their new album called MALI MUSIC. North African is good shit stuff cause they have French or English influence(depending upon who colonizd them) and also has that African Flavor with a middle eastern twist to it. should check it outGoto www.Astralwerks.com they should have it listed. While you're there Check out ROYSKOPP too they are from Scandenavia(if you like Morcheeba), and Beth Orton(what a soothing Voice) too. |

Czar-"You just made Sajha personality of the month, in my humble opinion anyways" Thank you Czar, so what do i get? An exclusive "pass" to the Grammys?? :) A "musical drought"?? c'mon gimme a break my friend. I know it's your opinion but to me she's one heck of a singer and that too for a brand new comer...without comparing to any others I feel that she's got a unique style, she may appear a bit nervous in shows like Jay Leno or Conan but I've listened to her songs a thousand times while driving to school and each song of hers has a certain appeal. From If I were a Painter to Come Away with me to Don't know why each song inspires a writer to come up with different storylines, now if that isn't "appealing" then I wonder what is.....have a great weekend Czar! |

I bow to the superior judgement of a lady ! And a delectable one at that. I have specifically stated earlier, I already said YES. If Norah gives you joy, more power to you. If you would be so kind as to consider adding Morcheeba, Nnenna Freelon and others to your listening pleasure is all I'm suggesting here. Mind you, just a suggestion. My compliments to you for having started this lively topic. Have a great weekend ! |

CZAR, Wow you listen to Yousouf N' Dou!... N'Dou's son (13yrs old..I think) plays the talking drums in his father's concerts. N'dou is great and so is Salief Keita... He is Senegalese too. Has a rich voice with a soul moving lilt to it. And boy can he play the electric guitar! Others are Cesaria Evora, Susheela Rahman (Indo-Euro fusion... with a voice that can move one to the heights or the depths of passion!), Not to mention Manu Chou! Happy listening guys! |

How very unlikely. Three people who know Youssou N'Dour. I hadn't pulled up this thread because--well, the Grammys? What do I care? I can't bear pop music--and then I see people are talking jazz and Afropop! Cool. It's inspired me to put on my old tape of Immigres--my favorite is a very haunting tune, called Pitche Mi, which of course is haunting cuz of its sound and not its lyrics, which are in--what? Wolosi? But then I always do have a strong tendency to respond to music rather than lyrics. Very unsophisticated of me, I'm sure, but what the heck. I've wanted to learn more about Afropop; I like it, and even took some African drumming in the distance past, but I'm very out-of-touch musically these days. Maybe this will inspire me to ask some African friends about the best music they know ... And Sitara, I've got to check out your suggestions :-) Hey, I've heard there's a great Afropop dance club in Adams Morgan; maybe some Friday evening, a Sajha Afro dance party ... |

Sally... So you played the African drums? Nice, nice! There is a book store in Adam's Morgans, I used to frequent "Yawa books", which houses African music, books, jewelry....etc. And does Adam's Morgan have an international soul.... used to hang around there a lot; loved it so much, I did an ethnographic study on the people and place frequenting an Italian restaurant ,"I Matti" there! Afropop dance club hmmmmm? must be new ... I have not been to AM for a while now. As for the music....another one to listen to is Rachel (an Egyptian Singer)....she croons to your soul and raises your pulse-rate with pulsating rythmn! These people give a musical high if you are looking for one! :) |
