A contribution from Biswo's message from the thread "Lobbying India". . "One more from me: a friend of mine, Arindam, was IIT topper and now goes to Berkeley for Comp Sci PhD." Suppose Biswo had, in that message, plainly written "an Indian friend of mine" said this or that, no *substance* from his message would have been lost. Congratulations to Biswo for letting us all know that such a heavily credentialed gentleman is his friend. |

A contribution from Simplegal's message from "memory of winter vacation/NYC" thread. "I arrived in NYC 3 weeks ago, my head spinning from a day long qualifying exam in a subject that both fascinates and frightens me." Suppose she had said "long exam", no *substance* would have been lost. So, congratulations to Simplegal for letting us all know that she's soon-to-be a Ph.D candidate, capable of withstanding the rigours of a daylong egg-jams. The subject, by and by, was narcissism (correct the spelling). |

Khaja Biscuit: I am wondering if you are really serious about this enterprise? There are at least seven threads currently on the board which reek of or are entirely about self-promotion. I expect you will bring those to the forefront too. Also, would you say reviving an old virtually dead thread because it contains flattering posts about you or because you started it qualify for the distinction of blatant self-promotion? If it does, there are at least three such threads on the board right now. Anyhow, I would love to help you my friend, but I am at a loss as to where to begin! :) |

Surya, which ones are you thinking of? The one that shows off the great skill of pulling nose hair while talking on a cell phone? Khaja Biscuit, what are the rules? Would it be self-congratulatory to say "I read Guru of Love," because this shows that I can read, or would it only be self-congratulatory to say I read something more highbrow, like, "the other day I was reading Foucault's Archeology of Knowledge"? And does this message, right here, count as self-congratulatory because it revealed that I know a book by Foucault? What if I added, "but I had to turn to the bookshelf to find out what the heck the title of that Foucault book was." Does that modify the self-congratulatory note (because I confessed to not knowing the name right off) or is it, itself, self-congratulatory (because I mentioned it was on my bookshelf)? Just wanna get clear on the rules ... |

Sallyji, one rule is that the perceptibly self-promotional material should have a high AQ (i.e. Amusement Quotient) for the rest of us. Who gets to decide what's amusing and what's not? We all get to decided so. Had you said, "I could have written a *better* 'Guru of Love' myself", your statement would have been here. You said no such thing. More than Foucault, Derrida is the one who's relevant here. :) Suryaji, let this thread bob up to the top from time to time. Deconstruction takes time. |

Great thread! Hopefully it will teach us to take oneself less seriously and get off the high horse once in a while! But then, it is the strutting and prancing that makes this site so cool! Some of us like to show off our intelligence, some like to exhibit their high taste (music, film, books, food), some want to say which cool place they hang out at (restaurants, hotels, clubs, cafes) others want to enlighten us as to where they vacation, some want to let it off in Japanese, Chinese, French, Hindi, English, Jamaican! Others cling on to moral high ground. Some folks just set on attracting the attention of the other sex. It is all this drama, hopes, fears, intentions that make this site so cool. Character for every season! Didn't some big guy like Shakespeare say that the whole world is a stage ? (Here I try to show I read dem high literature!). Some of us do it so subtly (hints, allusions), others do it bluntly, like this guy Rastaman! In order to show that he is a good athlete and a fast runner, Rasta makes a long story about him loving all his neighbors equally - both husbands and wives - and somehow connects that to Jusus and the Bible. Have you ever seen a such a convulated and long-winded story to show dat you are number one? Rasta, hold it man, before you throw that at me, Jest kidding! |

I don't care about other's posting, whatever people write is their own business, guff diyos ki thatta garos ki je sukai bhaye pani, I don't wanna interfere. I tried to find "self-promotional" material in my own postings. In one posting, I gave my email address. Isn't that self-promotional? Tyasta ta katti chan katti chan. BTW, sajha is losing it's charm ho ki, I am less interested in Sajha these days ho? If I stop reading postings like the way I am doing right now, and Stop writing in sajha, it is going to be good for me NEXT semester. (take it as self-promotion hai...) OK, Khaja Biscuit, I think I'm catching on. PremPujari, I think that, by following the rules, you could make that self-promotional by saying: Undergrad version: "This semester was really khattam for me. I spent so much time on sajha that I didn't devote sufficient time to my pre-med classes here at Yale, and earned only a B plus in organic chemistry. I'm taking an overload of six classes next semester, plus an honor's thesis. So I'd better cut back on the time here, so I can get back to seeing all those As my mummy has come to expect of me, or she'll just kill me when she jets over again for a bit of shopping on Park Avenue!" Graduate version: "I really have to stop riding this sajha bus. It's cutting into my preparation time for that undergrad course I'm teaching, and while I can get away with that because the undergrads here at Stanford aren't all they're cracked up to be, I really must devote more time to my dissertation on Macroeconomics of the Known Universe, particularly if I'd like to some time to pursue my relaxing little hobby of translating Portuguese poetry into Chinese." |

Well, sorry to read this thread relatively belatedly. Now since I am that pompous fella, I probably write something about pomposity. Whether my statements was appropriate or inappropriate can be debated. But one thing is sure: as we are becoming internationalized, it is very natural for us to seek friends from the neighboring countries who are in the position to lead their nation in the future. And we should do that. We should not make a coterie of Nepali people, and huddle ourselves together and isolate ourselves from our neighbors. And as world's brightest and smartest graduate students throng to world's best graduate schools, it is natural that we can have friends from all countries right here in USA. Let's say this much : I am proud of the fact that I can have opinion of acadamically distinguished citizens of our neighboring countries in the issues [related to India or China] when I want to. |

Very interesting thread. Again the idea of self-promotion/self-congratulation is pretty much relative, and depends on personal taste. Some may argue--no, I have actually been told so by some sajhapures--that posting your article/s (published elsewhere) YOURSELF in Sajha is bad taste. Well, others may even decide whatever I write is self-promotion. Well, it's in a way. For I am trying to promote by beliefs, ideas, the world as I see it, and so on and so forth. This argument can get tricky, right. |

khaja biscuit, Very interesting thread, and one long overdue. And by your rules, there'd be whole lot of posting that would fit the bill. To VV's point, I think we all recognise a narcissist posting when we see one. The dividing line might be hazy but there is certainly one between promoting your ideas/opinions/values and promoting yourself. NBS |

Sathi ho: We can be blithe if we want. It is natural under the circumstances. Who can honestly say s/he is not been guilty of some form of self-promotion at some point in her life here on Sajha. Of course, as Sally has so eloquently pointed out, for some it may be about how well s/he can pick nose hair while driving. But Suva Chintak is right of course when he says the egos on display is what makes this site interesting. Whatever it is, this particular enterprise of pointing gout who is being self-congratulatory is wholly pointless! Ani pheri, I can see how this thread could simply turn into being about picking on individuals who are supposed “mapais.” What is this Nepalis’ obsession with mapais bhanya ni?! Best thing to do is ignore mapais. Now if people start lying or hurting others with their hyperboles then maybe it’s good to point out this or that. But really… “Let the man who is without sin throw the first stone!” (that’s my butchered attempt at quoting Christ hai!) If people are going to go around tooting their own horns and it makes them feel eee-special, well who cares! It is unseemly and embarrassing. But ke matlab bhanya ni. Hagne lai bhanda herne lai kina chaso? As long as that’s not all they have to say and at least **some** of the claims are backed up by substance, who cares really. Hyaa alchi lagdo policing behavior. Minding others bidness while a big ass bhaisi might be crawling on ya!!! |

VV: I agree with you. Everything that one writes here can be taken as self-promotion. Heck even my use of English (or the misuse of it rather) can be taken as "Oh Suna thinks she can write, well let ME show her". This whole argument can be tricky! Add to that the fact that we, as a collective group - Nepalese, (YES I KNOW THERE ARE SOME WHO ARE DIFFERENT, QUIT REPEATING - I'm DIFFERENT blah blah blah! That itself is narcissism) do not have the ability to appreciate one another for who/what we are and have become nor have we learnt to appreciate each other's success. For example, take the thread on Sudha Shah, the thread on Guru of Love. PEOPLE! wake up smell the flowers and appreciate all of those who have achieved greatness in life - school, relationships, positions and YES - have born wonderful children (all 25 of them! or 3! or 1). |

Why limit ourselves to posts? Why not look at our chosen nick names too. For example.... why "surya??" The sun? Now isn't that a bit presumptious! Doesn't that show how full of myself I am. (is this preemptive too:) ) Or let's say why "Khaja Biscuit"? Why not Pepperridge Farm or some other gourmet brand-name biscuit? Being consciously self-effacing is sometimes itself self-congratulatory... it could be like saying, "Hey, I am one of the people. I am common man. I am every man." Like Oprah's theme song "I am every woman!" Now for a second did you think she was "every woman?" The richest woman in America.. every woman?! Is that your point here Khaja Biscuit? You have already let us know in this thread that you not only know of Derrida, but that somehoe Derrida is even more high brow that Focoult. :) Someone already asked who get to define the parameters of what is self'promotion? :) Intention is irrelevant. But I say perception is wholly unreliable. So what then? Since you are familiar with the theories of deconstruction and about Foucoult and Derrida... maybe you can enlighten us? |

The senor who lives in Japan and types incessantly is a shining example and so is Mr. Paramendra. I have to say, not all revelataions about self (or blatant self-promotion for that matter) ought to be condemned. Some of them serve a purpose, an example of which would be Mr. Rabindra's drive to help Nepal. I feel like I have absolved myself. |

Khaja Biscuit ji, Great thread you've started! One thing I fail to understand is all this talk of "high" things. Does reading Foucault, having an IIT topper friend, or any other instance described in this thread qualify a person as higher than any other who may not have shared such experiences? I'm sure that no matter what eventually turns out on a sajha posting, each writer at the fundamental level is merely trying to share his beliefs and experiences. And that is what makes each posting worth reading and keeps bringing us back to sajha for more. It's like a family, with it's share of quarrels and make-ups. The Amusement Quotient is, whether narcissistic or otherwise, the magnet that pulls us to sajha, don't you think? Another thing I want to add to the talk of "high 'n mighty" is that when we go home to Nepal to meet family and friends who may not know who Shakespeare is, how to operate a computer, or even read or write in Nepali, I'm sure most of us still share an amazing time with them. And this dichotomy of highs and lows dwindles to insignificance. For instance, my grandmother knows of things that I can only imagine. She may not know of Steven Hawkins and Steven Spielberg, or Rabindranath Tagore, but she sure knows a helluva lot more than I do! And this reciprocity of knowledge in different domains is what weaves people's lives together. In peace |

I am here to have fun to escape the boredom at work not for recognition. But i have seen people getting really serious about this here though( like it would really advance their career). Paramendra being one of them(has managed to mention his participation at Sajha in his BIODATA), like Ashu who argues with everyone that disagrees with him ..these are prime two example i have seen here at Sajha |

CZAR ji Just thought I might as well live it up! You put out an expectation...I might act on it! ;) As for the semantic swords and khukuris...seems like everything boils down to who da best...according to cookie monster, here. Can one have an opinion? Can one, express oneself? Can one perhaps find an outlet for an "educated" discussion on "ignorant" views? Can one exchange views, perceptions, can one dare to interract without being labeled?.... I have learned so much from Sajha...from the knowledgeable as well as the not knowledgeable....I have learned how little I know about things I thought I knew...and also, know things' existence of things that had not existed for me.... So, hubris or not, self promotion or not, can we just "let it be" without having a self-appointed executioner and his posse....at large???? But scorch you, my sire???? Neva!!! |

Khaja Biscuitji, It is very important to provide information about a person you are quoting. If you are to quote Bill Richardson in Nepal, how would you do that? Bill Richardson, former energy secretary of USA, right? So, why should I not quote "Arindam, IIT topper..." rather than just saying an average Indian? Btw, who do you think would be your 'average Indian' who can be quoted here? Suppose, I were to write "a Calcutta-born friend of mine said he never knew of embargo", would that make any sense or would that be of any weight? Not to me. And, yes, I am proud of the middle-class raised, hardworking friend of mine who is modest ,who is vehemently pro-Nepal, who loves Nepal, and who once topped IIT, and I won't enshroud him with anonymity while quoting him anywhere. Now, one more thing, to have an IIT topper[May be Presidential Gold Medalists are rare, but department toppers are a lot.] friend is not a big deal if you go to a good school in USA. In fact, some of our fellow Nepali Sajhaites are probably smarter than those fellas. You are also likely to encounter Beijing University topper , Tokyo University topper etc here.To do 'another self-promotion', a good Chinese friend of mine [Now, she is not that much pro-Nepal] topped one of the Beijing University departments. Now, to land in your topic of 'self-congratulations'. What is that? Aren't you, ironically, doing exactly that, my friend? With gleeful, blatant sense of self-gratification, picking a person and his posting the way you like and trying to lynch him/her the way you want? If you were in Nepal, you would have accused late Lain Singh Bangdel of 'self congratulation' because he talked about his friendship with legendary filmmaker Satya Jit Ray in Nepali papers. Seto Bagh writer Diamond Shamsher would be charged of 'self promotion' because he didn't write the damn good novel anonymously. All the good writers of Garima/Madhupark would be self-congratulating except perhaps Raraa, Bhutko Bhinaju etc writers whose names are not that obvious.Give me a break , my friend, and enjoy the freedom Sajha.com provides you to write whatever the hell you want here until you are saturated with self-gratification. |

And before people go attacking this issue of using one's real name, it is important for them to understand a little 'history' of sajha. To understand why sajha is probably the most popular site among Nepalese living in USA, it is important to understand why other sites failed, and why sajha didn't. Sajha's success is largely due to San and his zealous watch of wayward posters. But who were those posters who spat out sleazes in the beautifully carved pages of sajha and other Nepali discussion sites? We don't know, but we know one thing: absolute majority of those posters, if not all, were cowards who took benefit of anonymity. Most of the sites were deserted by serious readers because those sites were disfigured by the feckless posters and their sleazy, salacious, insalubrious postings. If those who used their name were self-promoting, they also took more flak than others. They were attacked relentlessly for things that were related to race, their belief, their gender etc. And yet, most of the time, in Sajha, they were also the very person who stood up for the right of any [Nepalese] to write in this site what he thinks without the fear of any oppressive authority and without using any name. So, it is ludicrous for some fellas to accuse those who uses their own name here as 'self-promoter'. They are equally responsible for the progress of this site as the other [no-name using] visitors. There is no use of visiting this issue again and again. Sabailaai Chetana Bhayaa. |

Biswo, My friend, well said. You see this is the fall-out of being active in a forum like sajha. On top of that with your own name. How things look differently to people who like to live in their own burrow they have dug themselves up. For some people it looked like a "self-promotion" when you happen to mention who that guy was. To my eyes, the information you provided authinticated what you were writing. But of course, for some people it was blatant self-promotion. Like I said if you are bhyaguto living in a kuwa..... [fill in the blank please]. If you are still reading 'Kapuri ka, kharayo kha', and if somebody mention of Dante, Foucault (sp?), or even Kranzen it might sound like "self-promotion." My advice? Just write. Do not worry about this kind of thread and originators of this kind of threads. Maybe he/she (in this instance) had nothing better to do that day and started this thread without thiking it through. or, who knows, for him/her this is the best, the most original thing he/she created in his /her entire life. About writing with your own name. only we, the Sajha "historians" know what is. NO? |

These self-promoting, self-congratulating and (as in Biswoji's case) consciously social-climbing Sajha personalities appear to have such brittle personalities and fragile egos (SimpleGal excepted) that even a thread started for amusement makes them crumble with anger, fear, shrill moralizing and sly pre-emptive comments. They could have shrugged and laughed at this whole thing, but they cannot. Therein lies the fun for the rest of us. |

Dear Khaja Biscut, Very perceptive words, your last snippet. I think this was the most fun thread, so thanks for starting a very timely and intertaining forum. In some ways I felt this was the Gaijatra festival in Sajhapur! For the rest of the year we direct our righteous gaze and ire at the bloody Maoists and monarchy, at Koiralas and Khumes, Saddams and the Bushes...but here we turned the limelight inwards and behold!! Interesting scences and snippets...some laughed it off in good humor, others kept on pretending they were above it all...and some just didn't give rat's ass! Some sophisticated ... elegant name/school/place/club/hotel/book droppings, others just "I am so and so" plain speaking grab at the spot on the sun. But all our aspirations, hopes, fears and tribulations came through..and that was beautiful. After all, we are human beings - and home sapiens Nepalansis to boot! May be dem umrikans be different! But all of it was hugely intertaining...this thread also felt like the Sienfeld show somehow...all the characters so self-centered and you are given an vantage point to see through it all! I bet that Sajhapur will never be the same after this thread, especially when combined with the scores of modest and self-depreciating (ahem1) letters of acceptance sent to San Pradhan on New Year's day! In the spirit of community catharsis and collective laugh, I propose that San Pradhan release on this site all the letters that he received from the Sajhapersons of the Year 2002!! He should release one letter a week, so that we can spend the whole year laughing at our selves...which I think is one of the best human qualities. Laughter is the best medicine!! |

"Sajhaite 2002," "Sajha Oscars," "NYC ko Jhajhalko," "New year in DC"... etc. etc. There was even a Gaijatre thread which was over 200 posts long. All this self-referential banter makes things interesting at times and really tedious at others. What I will say though is that this will NOT change anything. :) Khaja Biscuit! I was really really hoping you would do more that just dismiss the naysayers! I am thoroughly disappointed!! I really am!! All this attention bestowed upon your silly thread and you simply dismiss!! Seems to me that Sajha has seen of recent a surfeit of individuals with the firm belief that they are more Catholic than the Pope. Poking fun is one thing, but that moment has long passed. I see sneering arrogance directed at the hard working, principled and worthy people who frequent and populate Sajhapur. It revealing of the character of one who does that. It takes courage to admit it one's mistakes, so get off your high horse and stop this nastiness. Khaja, be man enough to acknowledge this and lets move on. |

Khaja biscuit, why are you dragging this issue so outboard? why are you getting so personal? Most of us come to sajha to share, to muse and to have fun in our little breaks from classes, work, travel or other tasks and chores that we are involved, whether it be slacking or on real free time (thats our problem). There are some facts, rumors that we choose to keep "private". If one wants to share their information, we would see them write regardless of what it is--be it boasting, information, education, awareness, songs, books, arguments whatever. We don't need a third person going on a writing spree on sajha poster of what they hear, or pretend to know. Furthermore, if you can't take those posting just skip them, its that easy. What i fail to understand is why are you so heavy hearted on what sajhaposters choose to write. If something does not meet sajha standard our sajha king is prompt to censor it respectfully. so why do you need to take the burden on your shoulder to categorise the poster name, quality, quantity or anything else for that matter? I am not trying to defend anyone nor have issues with you, but my friend its about time you put this issue to rest. I |

"Smart AND intelligent"? Sitara, what's the difference? There's certainly a difference, though, between intelligent and wise--and category B is a lot harder to get into than category A. My apologies ... this is not a very meaningful post ... but I'm so inspired at the thought of being Number 100, and besides, I'm just driven to move that counter up a notch, and see what happens if I get to 20. Is there some funny sound, like on a video game? Does a death knoll ring? Forget Sajha Poster of the Year. The most revealing question is, Who will be Most Voluble Poster? "Intelligent" usually implies the ability to cope with new problems and to use the power of reasoning and inference effectively. "Smart" refers to quick intelligence and often a ready capability for taking care of one's own interests. .....from dictionary.com |

And he also tells I dat if I can make dem umrikanis to come again and again, he will soon raise my wage to $ 9/hour (Sudha Shah, you be listenin?) Oh no, me only smart, not wise!
