I work in a place where I come in contact with different kinds of people. Being a Nepali, I hate myself when many of the people tell /assume that I am "originally" from India.

I have little dark complexion resembling Indians.

I have accent very similer to Indians.

My real name and last name sounds like Indians.

When I tried to explain where Nepal is, they have no clue.

Can some one give me some advice to get rid of this Indian identity? I am literally sick of explaining people that I am not an Indian. What should I do?
ruck Posted on 14-Jan-03 10:23 AM

Sweetie.. don't worry about what others think of who you are and where you hail from.. dont take the pain of convincing ppl that you're a Nepali....don't pay a heed....

Jai Nepal!!
:-))
Robert Frost Posted on 14-Jan-03 10:31 AM

Sweety,

Very sorry to hear that.

I know, once you explain, twice you explain but explaining everytime can get well out of hand and irritating at times but don't loose hope. You should keep going till the time you get recognized by everyone as a Nepali girl. Because you are a Nepali sweety and the product of mother Nepali.

Yestai bela ho hamle Nepali bhanera chinaune. At this juncture, when you have opportunity, you shouldn't get tired.

So I say, go ahead and tell everyone who asks you that you are a NEPALI, without getting irritated of the overwhelming questions you are getting.

You remain, Sweety.

Jai Nepal, Sweety

Jai Nepal, ruck

Jai Nepal, to everyone!

If it helps, wear those shirts that read kathmandu, or nepal or have pictures of everest and things like that. maybe that will help. and to those who say "u look like an indian" just say "no, they look like ME" i hope it helps.
bill_pusateri Posted on 14-Jan-03 11:06 AM

I have found that the best way to answer this question is to turn the tables on them.
Instead of having to answer their questions, you ask them the questions. Where they are from? Have they lived there all their lives? Have they traveled to other states. Did they learn any geography in their school? Did they never travel? React surprised to each of their answers. When you answer their question never say "India" in your answer. Instead say, "south of China". Dont allow yourself to be intimidated by their questions or by their ignorance. Get on top and stay there.
kewl Posted on 14-Jan-03 11:26 AM

So then you want to called American..? All or great great great grndpa and grandma came from India..I wonder why ...:)...Ahha well I guess all Neps wants to called Chinese or Pakis....lol
littlejhonny Posted on 14-Jan-03 11:32 AM

this is funny ......... real funny......... cause sweety hates indian and she is identify as indian in states. ... its likely that her best hero must be sharuk kahn or hritik roshan ( any india actor ) week ends must be watchign hindi movie but still she does not likes to be identify as indian ......... some hate heh .... well why dont you guys faces facts ......... we nepali dont have any identity .... yes gorkhas were recognised once but ... they are dumb (iditos) ......... any dangerous situation gorkhas are send to get killed ..and guess what they not even paid as much as a british soilder...any way out nearest neighbour is india and china ..and the whole sarrc community knows that india is the driving force of this region( including pakistan). in nepal 70% of economic activity happens cause of indians (marwaris) most of your dad must be licking there ass to make money. in ameriaca the richest migrant population is indians........... we share cultue ,religion and blood with indians .. our kings used to marry indian princess .......... . if your information there are more nepalis in india earnign bread and butter then indias in nepal... the point i am trying to make here is ....... why cant you guys think out of your undies .... you guys there in america are struggling to rise above poverty line .... stay hand to mouth most of the time ..and then make statement whihc can cause barriers in nepali community. if you were smart enough you would take advantage of the complexion you have ... instead of hatign them why dont you guys learn some thing from them and make your life better ........ today world is talkign about globalisation .. today nepal is suffering cause indian tourist are not comming .. look at sweety ....... hey sweety why dont you do a favor .. write i am not indian on your for head mey be that will help ........... god help nepal ........... but i am not sure is god can help nepales like you people

sally Posted on 14-Jan-03 11:57 AM

What I hate is supermarket check-out counters. It's not the cashiers' fault, but they all seem to be under a diktat from management to end every transaction by staring in befuddlement at my name on the receipt and saying, "Have a nice day, Miz ... Miz ... HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE THIS?"

Every danged time.

And I don't even have a hard last name. Maybe when venturing out into the wide world, it's a good idea to be armed with free sample copies of "Hooked on Phonics."

Sweetie, you might also want to pack "Geography for Dummies."

But seriously, don't worry about it. Let it go. Hey, at least those people have heard of India, and figured you looked kinda like one o' them folks. Someday, hopefully, you'll be in a more educated environment, where even if people don't know exactly where Nepal is (sigh), a quick description easily suffices. ("Where Mt. Everest is. Between India and China," and that's enough). For now, take it as an interesting glance into the dark, dim underbelly of America's so-called great literacy rates.
rajunpl Posted on 14-Jan-03 11:59 AM

This is the article made by same me a while ago in some other forum

I use to work in a cocktail bar as a part time student. You might know how the customer are like one gorgeous lusty lady came across and said to me "You look alright " where are you from youngman? I replied NEPAL then she goes where is it? I explained her.

On my way to college again I come across an Afroman,a collegemate. We've been chatting for a while and all of a sudden he goes "you are indian aren't you?" I said nepalese. Again he goes ain't it a part of India bro? I replied him nepal was exist before India and its indipendence. He was moaning and groaning, I ain't got no goddamn idea I was talking do i?

Interesting is when i did work with a university student girl in a restaurant she was asking about whereabout of me? I said the same. I give her clue about birthplace of lord buddha, she was saing isn't it in india?

Later I realised deeply one day . Oh yes, they are not that wrong.
why would they know about nepal. what field they would know the nepal about. How many great nepalese are known across the world?

Ouch ! I forgot the some biggest incident the world would know nepal about. latest king Birendra incident and the Maoist guerilla's movement. Is this how we going about?

It is sad my friend when it falls on to you what so ever you suy it doesn't work turning table on them sometime.

What i will suggest mr littlejohny ji is everynepalese fav. hero is not indians I like client eastwood meself, I can watch any movie I like. I can do anything I like. But also I would like to be being nepalese. I could be proud there.

Even if we go for the religion we are richer than the indians we have two major holy places like macca and madina in saudi.

We are the one who is suffering is because of man like you mr. little john and the crap leaders.Believe me policy is the one who makes the country rich it doesn't get rich own its own.Indian tourist doesn't have to feed nepalese when there is a equal amount of beggars as the nepalese population.

You can take the example from the japanese and the chinese. They have the same case of nepal and india. same ethnic origin, moreorless same religion and they look the same as we do.But why is japan much greater than the chinese in every aspect.

Do you know who would you blame? peoples like you and the girija.Because he didn't see the world all he could se may be the indian and the indian movies of saharukh khan like you said.MAAL PA KO TARA CHAAL NAPAKO.People like you are the one who make nepal so disgraceful although it lies there since thousand of year by the grace of god.

Gorkhali are only the gorkhali which doesn't exist anymore. Even in the army career they are gorkhali like virtual nepali after his pension he becomes real nepali. Now all his nightmere begins. For instance he fight for britain with his life in his hand for the sake of the country.and when he get pension he has to apply visa to get same country and more likely his visa can be rejected. Is this fear?

Do you know why all this happen because there is a man like you mr. little johnny
kewl Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:16 PM

India should built Bir hospital, India should built almost all the highways, India should establish one of the most reputed medcinie coll in Dharan, India should offer scholarship in medicine & engineering and then we should hate India. India is not only bihar.and like it or not.India is moving forward each day..agreed they have lot of problems..but which country does not have ? Why should I hate all Indians if there exists some problem between government levels....
boston_dude Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:22 PM

question of identity. Hmmmm... why? why is it even important to be recognized as a Nepali or not to be identified as an Indian? WHO CARES? You know who you are and be comfortable in it. That's all.

Remember this: no one chose to be born in the country they were born in. So, why place so much emphasis on this pride with being associated with a certain country or race?

B_D.
rajunpl Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:23 PM

kewl ji , You are right, In each matter there is a both positive and the negative aspect. You learn from the gorkhali as i mentioned above. Why would they do that? There are plenty of things what india did and didn't.It has both good and bad reasons. Like mexico is both good and bad for the us.Sit back relax and think about it before you decide anything.
sweety Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:26 PM

Kewl and Little Johnny,

I did not say I hate India or Indians.
I just want to differentiate myself from being identified as an Indian.
I prefer being a humble Nepali.
kewl Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:29 PM

Seems you need to sit and relax then again explain what you really want to say...and before calling anybody by name, look at yourself.

sweeety, ask your parents tos ned you money and go for a cosmetic/plastic surgery and change your face to whoever/whatever you'd like to be recognized as.

But, if you ask me, i'll say ask the doc to make you look like Catherina Zeta Jones or Zhang Zi Yi.

I hope this helps.
kewl Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:32 PM

Sweety,
Thats perfectly allrite..If you wanna be identified as Nepali..just tell them you are nepali...wats the big deal here then..?
isolated freak Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:34 PM

If money is a problem: If someone questions your identity, just tell them you are a hispanic. :-)

Re: accent, learn from "da rasta broda", he can teach you how to speak American, Jamaican, Puertoi Rican and ToraBoaran (accent).

Now this should REALLY help.
kewl Posted on 14-Jan-03 12:39 PM

Its getting interesting now..Mr. Deepesh..if we hate India, if we think its making us another Afganisthan..Dont accept their money. all neps should reject scholarships in Ind coll, universities. All Neps should die in nepal instead of being cured in Valore. Do we have that courage to declare that we dont need Indian loan money ?

My point is no one is perfect, no country is perfect..But what is there to hate indians..?? I have seen people hating our Tarai brothers just cuz they speak hindi..I know there are lot of difference between Ind gov policies..but that is always there..why spread that hate among general people..

his is not the the think india hs been the bir Hospital, almost highwys and much more others. My friend allthe think they have done i agreed but i hate those things u no what was the condition in afganstan is the america done goodso u are the man who is dancing over the blood like Ahmed karajai . so try to thing who has done right or who has done wrong donn't try to a W buss.
vivid Posted on 14-Jan-03 01:12 PM

Sweety,
I just let them guess. They would go on forever, one african even went upto 4 months but couldn't get it right. For those who want a quick answer, I always ask them if they had ever heard about The mount Everest. Who will say no to that. Then, I tell them that I come from the foot of that very famous peak. Then some will say that it lies in China or India. To them my only question will be do u know which country was never colonised in the past? Then if they(most of them) don't know, tell them that is Nepal, a country of its own.
Ke garne jati nai garib bhaye pani, jati nai bichaleet bhaye pani afno rastiyata bhaneko pyaro nai lagcha arka ko bhumi ma aaye pachi. I can understand your feelings.
Don't give up!

I agree with Boston_Dude! i mean yeah we all nepali and we gotta reprsent, but if someone mistakes u for somethiin else then just be like nah im from Nepal, or wat ever....and yeah ppl usually dont got a clue where the hell that...if they wanna know tell them...if they dont care.....u walk on.....just dont sweat it.....

I dont understand this thred of India bashing while we all are so dependent on them. Similarly, over a crore of our brothers and sisters work there. May be we need to be more openminded.

We also know that we will never win by bashing them. Realizing that we are always on a weak side, our policy should be towards more friendliness and brotherhood. But that is distant since we hate them so much.

No matter how they act, dress, or think, they are freaking 2 step ahead of us. let us face the reality.

? Posted on 14-Jan-03 03:52 PM

Well you've got a big job ahead to convince 6 billion people that you are not an Indian but of some other identity. The point is, you dont and dont need to. The people close to you would most likely know where you're from; if you start raging your brain about what every person makes of you, what else would you have time for? How unproductive?
I know most of you have ill will towards India and Indians as a whole without even getting to know them( including myself had such views at some point in life). Get a positive outlook on life. I for one, am completely clean of that attitude. Do no harm, seek no harm. Remember you should treat a person for who they are and not what they are. If you look from that perspective it wouldn't be bad being called an Indian either. It makes world a better place that way.
Logical Sense Posted on 14-Jan-03 04:19 PM

Very good point prasna chinhajyu and many others.

This is a very common problems faced by many people on this earth. So, why bother? But, have a positive look that people really take time to ask your identity and ask if they pronounced your name correctly. How many of us asked that question while in Nepal to somebody named 'Subrahamanium Swamy'?

So, as someone said in this thread, take a moment to explain it without getting irritated. This is the moment to advertise ourselves.

I have done T-Shirt tactics and it works.

Some of the common comments I get:

'Oh I did not know Nepalese had long nose'
'Oh you are first Nepali I know in this Institute...'
'Oh really? I thought you were from Sindh ...'

Also, it might help to understand, this kind of identity crisis is there in countries like Canada, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Taiwan etc which are shadowed by giant neighbors.

Also, earlier than 1980s, American's new India only as hostile neighbor of Pakistan. They knew Pakistan more than India. But, Indians' put India in the American Map.

So, should we too. We are one of the fasted growing community in US in twenty first century. All of us should do our part of the job in educating people.

Biruwa Posted on 14-Jan-03 04:29 PM

It is funny,

But surprisingly I have had exactly the opposite experience. For example just 2 days ago I was in a flight from Denver to Nebraska. There my co-passenger was a 30 something man. He asked me where I am from and I said Nepal. He knew all about Nepal from Everest to especial chiya.

This was not my first occasion. I have met with quite a lot of people who know about Nepal but not too much about India. That also specially when I didn't expect that they would know much about our country.

Also some months ago I met an octogenarian who knew a lot about foreign countries.

So whatever…….
bhedo Posted on 14-Jan-03 04:43 PM

Well, it must be your curry accent. Once you improve your accent, people will stop stereotyping you like that. I look a bit Indianish myself, but since my accent isn't Indian even a bit, I get mistaken for a whole slew of ethnic groups: Indian, Pakistani, Arab, Turk, North African, Iranian and Hispanic. There's no other explanation. Look at yourself in the mirror and start practicing your spoken English. Or, if you want to, you could cover yourself with a truckload of makeup. Hey, you might look weird, but at least you won't be feeling "uncomfortable" anymore.
Where I live, everybody seems to know where Nepal is. I do meet some retards here and there who have no clue, but more than often, I have no trouble explaining my background to people. Actually, I don't even reveal my ethnic background till people ask about it. Most people don't seem to bother. If people think you look Indian, then it's good for you because Indians after all are perceived as hardworkers. They truly are a model minority. If they think you're Indian, just let it be.
surya Posted on 14-Jan-03 07:10 PM

Okay I did not read all the posts so far, but just want to add my tuppence. Yeah, if someone mistakes me for an Indian or thinks Nepal is part of india, of coure it also bugs me. It used to lot more than it does now. Simply because I have come to realize (like what Bhedo said) its their ignorance about general world geography and politics. I personally make it a point to "educate" people about the difference between the two countries. Most people don't know or care enough to learn about others here; but at the same time people are also not stuck on remaining ignorant. When I have corrected told poeple who make that mistake, I usually just get a "Oh okay!" and not all of these peple look embarassed even or are necessarily intersted in where that is or where I come from. Maybe its is because I live in an area that has lots of immigrants. So anyhow. It's no big deal if people mistake me for Indian. I guess I have become patient! Or simply callous. Who cares anyhow? Being mistaken for an Indian is not the most irritating thing about living in bidesh. :)

mr.rajunpl namaste ........ . get your history right ......... and read more about china and japan....... problem wih tyou guys are that you guys have a big mouth and brain in undies. well if you really want to compare countries well compare usa ( the country you are in ) and japan ........ wiht india and nepal . the 1950 treaty was very similar to the treaty which usa did wiht japan after world war 2 ..(economically)if you understand economics.....and look at japan today and look at nepal ...... well mr east wood look around in nepal and see how many people watch english movies ..and and how many can understand them .... when you visit nepal next time find out how many people will know clint east wood and how many will know sharuk khan ................. this is serious i dont know how to talk to people like you who are so ignorent who just seen few cities or village of usa and thinks as i he has seen the world ............... all i can suggest you is that read more visit your collage library ....... read more and bullshit less ....... and if you bull shit make that bull shit intersting

Toilet Paper Posted on 15-Jan-03 04:26 PM

When I was new in America, I used to tell people that I was from Nepal whenever they asked me where I was from. Then there used to be people who wouldn't know where Nepal is. So I used to explain them by saying, "It is right next to India." Then they would star saying," Oh, so you are an Indian." And then I had to start my explanation all again. So after a while, and after putting some thoughts, I stopped saying," Nepal is right next to India." I started saying," It is right next to China." Then people stopped saying," Oh, you are chinese," because I don't look like one.

Hope this helps.
starry night Posted on 15-Jan-03 05:02 PM

Well i was also having very similar problem, but not anymore. so when people asked me where i was from, i showed them my back. I have a tatoo of South Asia. And highligthed is nepal wiht all its rivers, valleys and mountains. Quite a show i put on, especially with my laser pointer. i point out wher the himalayas start, where lumbini is exactly on the map, Kathmandu. I have an audience and we repeat together: Free Nepal! Free Nepal! Then i give them a pop quiz. If they answer wrong, i paddle them. and say, its a lesson..In nepal, many schools punish this way. ;) ahhhh, so now on, when people see me, they say, there goes a true nepali. Jai NEpal!

So anyways, heres my real story.
Ive bascially grown up in the states. And to me there is nothign more important then letting people know what nationality i am. I have many indian friends and when someone mistakes me from being indian, its not I that lets them know im nepali, its my indian, and white friends. And when someone calls me indian, i dotn get angry...for i have had to deal with this for the past 15 years! Instead i educate, and my friends now konw more facts about nepal than an average jay sharma! ( i hope that name is equivelent to a john doe, because that is what im tryint to get at. ) and its working. And also, We have to get involved in our community, and we have to make teh individual effort to introduce our rich and diverse culture to our new community. We represent nepal and we shoudlnt' hesistate to let others know.

testing, testing, testing one two ka four?
;)

Hey Sweety..dont be dipressed if someonez identifying you with the Indians..you still remain a Nepali. But you are not alone yo americanz even dont let the Indian go scot free....Here'z what an Indian fren sent to me from the States..he too faces questionz which are worst then yours. To tell you honestly..he sayz I wish I was born in Nepal..atleast I wouldn't hv to answer all this humilating questions:
Please enjoy:

Q. You're from India? I have read so much about the
country. All the wonderful places, the forests, the snake charmers,
the elephants. Do you still use elephants for transportation?
A. Absolutely. In fact we used to have our own elephant in our house. But later,

we started participating in elephant-ride sharing schemes with our
neighbors, to save the air. You see elephants have an "emissions"
problem.....

Q. Does India have cars?
A. No. We ride elephants to work. The government is
trying to encourage ride-sharing schemes.

Q. Does India have TV?
A. No. We only have cable.

Q. Are all Indians vegetarian?
A. Yes. Even tigers are vegetarian in India.

Q. How come you speak English so well?
A. You see when the British were ruling India, they
employed Indians as servants. It took too long for the Indians to learn
English. So the British isolated an "English-language" gene and
infused their servants' babies with it and since then all babies are born speaking
English.

Q. Why do Indian women wear red dots on their foreheads?
A. Well, in ancient times, Indian men used to practice archery skills by
aiming at their wife's red dot. In fact, that is one of the reasons why
they had many wives. You see, once they mastered the
art of archery and hit the target....

Q. Are you a Hindi?
A. Yes. I am spoken everyday in Northern India.

Q. Do you speak Hindu?
A. Yes, I also speak Jewish, Islam and Christianity.

Q. Is it true that everyone there is very corrupt?
A. Yes, in fact, I had to bribe my parents so that
they would let me go to school.

Q. India is very hot, isn't it?
A. It is so hot there that all the water boils spontaneously. That is why tea is such

a popular drink in India.

Q. Are there any business companies in India?
A. No. All Indians live on the Gandhian principles
of self-sufficiency. We all make our own clothes and grow our own food.
That is why you see all these thin skinny Indians -- it is a lot of hard
work.

Q. Indians cannot eat beef, huh?
A. Cows provide milk which is a very essential part
of Indian diet. So eating cows is forbidden. However in order to
decrease the population of the country, the government is trying to encourage
everyone to eat human meat.

Q. India is such a religious place. Do you meditate regularly?
A. Yes, sometimes I meditate for weeks without food
and drink. But it is difficult to keep my job, because I have to miss
work when I meditate like that. But the bosses there do the same thing.
That is why things are so inefficient there.

Q. I saw on TV that people there walk on burning
coals. Why do they do that?
A. We don't have shoes. So we burn the bottom of our
feet to make it hard, so that we can walk.

Q. Why do you sometimes wear Indian clothes to work?
A. I prefer it to coming naked.
