Rajesh shook his head.
Under the millions of stars, Rajesh kept on walking alone. He saw nothing but darkness. He was not sure whether the darkness was more widespread than his sadness.

“Aama”, the word slipped out of his mouth before Rajesh could realize. He lightly knocked on the door.
“Ko huh?” A female voice asked with some frightening and suspicious tone.
Rajesh paused a bit then with slightly sinking heart he replied, “Ma”.
“Ko ma?” The same female voice questioned with more hostile and shaky tone.
Rajesh stood there without saying a word. He couldn’t believe his own home was asking him who he was. For a second he thought, am I at the right place? He looked around. Even at that odd hour of the night- 2:15 AM- he could see that mango tree where he used swing in his childhood. He was standing at the same aangan where he once had slipped on gobar and banged his head so hard on a stone while chasing a white mune mune –that ghorle bakhrako patho…was so adorable – that he cried for two hours. His father screamed at him for being careless then brought some banmara or titepati and some other herbs to treat his bleeding wound but his mother? His mother cried for many days seeing the bandage and the scar later. His right hand slowly raised and caressed the scar on his forehead before Rajesh could realize. “Aama”, the word came out of his mouth again.
He looked around, tried to touch and feel everything for the last time. Tears were streaming down. He didn’t try to stop them. He wanted to cry. He was a stranger in his own aangan. People had made him a stranger in the past but this home had never treated him as a stranger before. Never.

Rajesh attended a lovely school in Gulmi for few years. Then one fine morning he came to Tansen with his father then rode a bus to Bhairwa. For some reason, he really enjoyed the town. He thought, “yasto thulo bazar ma basera padhna paye po…”. He mentioned his thought to his father. Two years later when one of his uncles passed the SLC and came to Butwal to attend Butwal Bahumukhi Campus, his father sent him with his uncle. He couldn’t go to his dreamtwon, bhiarwa, but butwal-khaseuli was not that bad, either. He started to attend a high school there.
He realized what home meant when he was away from home. He used to remember paralko kunyou, khairate dada, khahare, kuwa, dharo, barkha ma bhitta kotarera banaka kula haru, kera ko damcha bata jhareka panika dhara haru, mathala ghare, palla ghare sathiharu, dada muniko maila ko chhoro, bardada ki didi sanga gai charauna aaune chitikka pareki tara school najane saraswati…he missed all of them. Most of all, he missed his mother. He missed her every single day. Tinau lai herera afno ghar samjhido Rajesh lagatar ti uttar tiraka khoch haru hudai palpa tira bata aaune hawa ka jhokaharuma aama ko maya bokera aayeka Gulmeli batas lai chhutyauna khojthyo.

Bihani raat ko 2:20 bhai sakeko thyo. Whenever he was in the western region, he never missed an opportunity to visit his home in Gulmi. His father was a busy man and used to travel a lot. Rajesh definitely loved his father and enjoyed every moment spent with him but he always wanted to see his mother more. Every time he left home, he could see aamaka bhijeka pareliharu ra majetro ka kunaharu. Afule napadhepani sadhai “dherai padhnu…thulo manchhe hunu” ko asirbad dine uski aama usko lagi swarga ki kunai devi bhnada kam aadarniya thiyinan. That’s why he wanted to go home and appear before his mother so at least for some moment he could see those gadeka eyes sparkling and that wrinkling face blooming with heavenly smile. Rajesh used to forget all his hassles when she used smiled at him and asked as always, ‘ oho..kanchho aayechha….….la hera gati yesko…kasto dublako…dher dhapedi nagar bhaneko…ke khanchhas babu?….talai sel mitho lagchha haina….pakh ma bholi banaidinchhu…ahile chamre kha hai….” She used to say that even when Rajesh was visiting her only for few hours.
Rajesh gharma junsukuai bela pani aai pugeko chha. Sajhma, aadha raat ma, bihan 2/3 baje, diuso…..he never thouht ghar jane kunai bela wa kubela hunchha. Home is the place where you belong. His home always welcomed him with open arms regardless of what a time machine or a calendar read.

High school sakera, he came to kathmandu and went to Tri-chandra campus. Then lok sewa ladera he became an officer. Kam ko silsila ma Gulmi ko wari pari gako bela Rajesh lad-dai pad-dai bhe pani ghar jane garthyo.
Pachhillo Dashain ma usko ba ra Rajesh aangan ma muda rakhera gaf gardai thiye. A man came. Ek chhin ko bhala kusari pachhi that guest asked Rajesh, ‘ani yahalai ta chinina ni…kata ho ghar?” Rajesh smiled. His father also smiled but the guest was still looking at both of them _bau chhora-with a question mark. Rajesh replied with halka smile, “ghar yahi ho mero”.
“Thatta nagarnus na…sachhai bhaneko..kata ho ghar”. Guest couldn’t believe. Rajesh ko ba le Rajesh ko kandh ma sneha purbak hath rakhera bhane, “yo Rajesh ho…mero kanchho….jagire chha…bahira bahirai hunchha….”
“Afnai gharma paraile malai parai bhanthanchha…” Rajesh thought. He was not sad then, though. But today? He was devastated.

“Ko ho bela na kubela? khai khukuri ka chha huh” Irritated voice sounded again. He looked around his home one more time then started to pull himself away from there. He was walking further and further away with his sinking heart.
Rajesh aama swarge bhe pachhi ghar pahilo palta aako thyo.
“Aama chhaunjel yo ghar le malai kahilei sodhena ma ko bhanera. Aaja Aama nabhaye pachhi,…..mero lagi khukuri khojdai chha…… “
“…yo ghar aba mero haina re chha….aba ma aaunna yaha…..ma tuhuro matrai haina aaja sukumbasi pani bhaye….” Rajesh cried man kholera basjhyang le gharko dhuri pani chheke pachhi….”
“kanchha..” he heard aama.
“Aama” he wanted to answer but couldn’t.

That's exactly what we needed in sajha these days :) ..a very riveting and a beautiful piece from u as always ....
please do write more.....this is not only me saying..but you got loads of fans..whom i got privilege of meeting them personally, and they all look forward to your stories. As for the impeccable phrases of nep. literature u throw here and there, it jus increases my "utsukta" to read more nepali :)..newly rejuvenated interest...
a classic as always..khoi aroo k bhanum..lekhi raum hai dai? maya namaram!

Thamda thamdai jhari go ni ho deel bata anshu, kya man nai amilo hune gari pesh garnu bho ke.
Auta kura sodhi halau na hai, kina hajur ko praya sabai katha haru biyoganta sailee ka??
Teeto wastabikta lai pani mithas purna jhalkaunu saknu nai hajur ko bisesta bhannu parla.
Lekhnu nachodnu hola, pratikchya ma basne haru ko tanti ma auta fan.

Deepji, yet another excellent story, kasto mutu nai chunay.
Butwal, Bhairahawa ko kura le afnai jawani ko samjhana aayo. Ani Ruck pani tetai tira ko ho ki kaso? Pawan Misthaan ko mithai samjhaera mukh ma paani nai aayo. Ke garne aba yaha ko grocery ko brownie khaera chitta bujhaune? Tyaha ko Kasturi Restaurant ko Indian veg khana pani khub mitho thiyo, ani Barmeli Tol ko Satkar Hotel ko sahuni le pani khubai mitho dal bhaat ra sikaar (khasi ko masu) pakautheen.
Somewhere around Manigram or Kotihawa, there was a concrete replica of a helicopter euta ghar ko chana ma. Ani Butwal ma Budhabar ko din ho kyare hoina haat lagne, Amar Path ma ho kyare. Tara haat bazaar ta purba tirai ko ramailo.
I remember one evening in Butwal. Tinau mathi ko jholunge pul tarera Khasyauli tira lagidaithiyo. Paani ta ekdam clear thiyo tara cheu chau ko dhunga haru ma aachi aachi ko spot dekhda sarai dukha lagyo. Khasyauli wore a deserted look though it must have been a bustling market before the highway was constructed. Yet, it was interesting to stroll along the narrow alleys. Ani Butwal ko bus station najikai saal ko paat ma khasi ko sekuwa khaeko. Kalika Hall ma Sampati herieko thiyo, that was the last Nepali movie I had watched before coming to the US.
Tansen ko ramailo arkai cha pheri. Tyo thaado ukalo bazaar, durbar ko thulo dhoka, Meheldhara ko dhungedhara, tyo Bhagwatithan, ani Tundikhel. Tyaha ko haas ko choela ta daami cha ni pheri. Srinagar ko danda ma guraans phuleko, ainselu phaleko ani salla ko ghari, ani tyahi bata manda hawa ma sallaghari ko susai sundai tala ko Tansen bazaar herda uttikai ramailo. Uttar tira ko himal bhane paapi baadalle chekeko thiyo tyo din.
Ek choti Ridi ra Ranighat ko pani fanko marnu parne. Resunga ko bayan pani sarai suneko ho. Khoi haat khutta chalna chodnu agawai ek choti teta janay mauka paiela ki bhanchu. Siddhiye jasta chan Nepal ko kunakapcha ghumne ti din haru, aba ta samjhana matrai banki cha. Sarai homesick po paray ta Deep ra Ruck le malai.

Ruck, tyo Siddhababa ko naam ta suneko ho maile pani. Is that the temple near Dobhan? Tyaha ko police chauki chahi Maobadi le udae bhanera news padheko thie. Ani teso bhae huri le udaecha tyo airplane lai? Ma teta nagaeko pani 10 barsa bhaecha. Baru tyo Rapti Hotel ma po lamkhutte le sarai dukha dieko thiyo. Ani tyo Bank Road ma, I think the next intersection after the hospital, Gallamandi bhancha haina tyo thau lai? Kera ko bokra ma chiplera ladeko chu tyaha, bessari thacharreko chu. Tyahi nira bata left turn garyo bhane Pawan Misthan pugincha hoina? Najikai bhae ta ahile nai janthay tyaha. So have you been to Jitgadhi? Kasto cha tyo thau?

rapti hotel bhanya butwal ma hoina ra? hospital agaadi??
Siddhababa ta palpa jaane bato ma cha, butwal bata 10- 15 minutes drive..bahumukhi campus ko baato bata jaane ho...

Malai ni pawan mishthhanna bhandar ko barfi yaad aayo :( in bhairahawa .
In Butwal, have any of you had badaam,"mamphali" as they call it there, sold in chauraha with noon khurshani, the best badaam i have ever had in my life. And chiso chiso hawa of batauli in the evenings was so serene, gone are those days :(
The other memorable past about Butwal and bhairahawa is the rickshaw rides, although looking back i feel bad for those rickshaw pullers.
And Tansen ko ukaali, orali...sallaghar, srinagar ko scenic charm simply priceless!

Bank Road bata sidhaa gayo bhane pani airport pugincha ni ho saachi but the Lumbini Road seems to be the more popular way to get there haina? Life ma kahile nachadheko thotro bus haru Bhairahawa bata Lumbini ra Belhaiya (I prefer saying Belhaiya to Sunauli) janda aunda chadhieko thiyo. Airport najikai Dogahari bhanne gau pani pugieko thiyo, Bhuwan KC ko jetho sasurali yahi ho bhanera dekhaeko thiyo euta le. Ghar ta majaa kai dekhinthyo, bahira raato tractor pani rahicha euta. Budha jamindaar hun bhanthay.
Ruck, maile bhaneko Rapti Hotel chahi Bhairahawa ko ho, just a few hundred meters south from Chauraha (bus station bhaeko) towards Belhaiya. Baato ko left patti pahelo 3 tala ko building thiyo. TYo Butwal ko bahumukhi campus chahi thaha bhaena, technical institute chahi baatai bata dekheko ho.
Ani Deepji le Kalika Hall ko sahulai chineko jasto cha ni? Tyaha Milan ra arko kun hall ray? Ani tyo Bhairahawa ko hall ko naam chahi ke ray, the one near the Himalayan Inn Hotel, Siddhartha Hall ho ki ke ho? New Road ray tyo thau ko naam pani.
Ani Tansen ma pani Indrachowk cha ra? Tyo chahi notice gariena. Asan, Makhan, ra Basantapur chahi thaha paeko ho. Tansen does seem to have more neighborhoods named after those in Kathmandu compared to other towns settled by Newars. Kathmandu bahira dhungedhara dekheko pani tyahi matra ho maile. Ani tyo Silkhantol bhanne naam chahi khub mitho lagyo.

ho najar, tyo badaam samjhyo ki bharkhar ghar jau huncha..garmi mahina ma butwal ko chiso hawa.. ani laam khutte pani dherai samjhanchu ma ta.. aama lei jhul lagayera suta bhanne, ma chahi jhul bhitra sutyo ki saas fernai garho hune..
ani chiple, tyo rapti hotel chine maile.. tyo thau lai jheel ke us paar pani bhanne garchan.. tyahi bhairahawa ko dai haru lei bhanya malai...
deep sri nagar ko samjhana ta jhal jhali aucha.. baccha bela ma tannai photo khijne rahar sri nagar gayera...

Ruck ko ghar teso bhae Butwal paryo ki Bhairahawa? Butwal ko arko euta kura samjhay. We were staying in the Nagarpalika ko guest house in Amar Path. Tyo highway ra Amar Path kai corner ma Tinau Hotel cha kyare hoina, agadi bata herda ek talaa ma euta euta matrai jhyal bhaeko? Anyway, as we walked towards the guest house, there were large boulders, partially buried on either side of the street. As I was thinking that this area must be on the old course of the Tinau, one of our sahayatrij remarked "Lama haru le yo dhunga haru bhettaeko bhae sabai tira Om Mane Padme Hum lekhthyo hola." Sadly, many of such boulders were being destroyed by the gitti kutne haru, a sign of poverty as well as environmental deterioration. Yeso sochay, ali dhani desh bhaeko bhae yo dhunga haru ko woripari rock garden banaera kasto ramro park banthyo hola.

Ho Deep tyo bhairawaha bata lumbini jaane bus ko ta sarhai bijog cha, kahile eutai bus ma chadera lumbini pugya hoina, jahile ni bigrera biccha baato maa kasto aapat..ani
kalika cinema hall ta purano bhai sakyo hoina ra, ma huda samma ta milan chowk ko milan hall dherai ramro thiyo.. tara film herera ghar farkida ta bus ma feri tyahi bijog, gundruk khadya jastai manche khadne hai??
Je hos, ghar bhanya ghar nai ho.. tyo haat bajaar ko fulki chahi ekdam miss huncha ni.. ghar ma banayera khana khojyo ,kaha tyo bhaiya lei banayeko jasto hunu... :-((

Ruck, oops let me rephrase the question then: Maiti kaha paryo kunni :)
Deepji kahile hideko ho tyo baato? When I travelled that route in the late 80's and early 90's, baato ta gajab thiyo ni tyo. Ajha Sajha ko Japanese bus chadhda ko ta majai arko. 115 km in 2 hrs and 5 mins ek choti ta..concord nai chadheko jasto lagyo tyo neelo Isuzu bus pani afu lai. Thau haru maile samjheko..Gaindakot, Pragatinagar, Bhedabari, Nawalpur, Kawasoti, Arun Khola, Dumkibas ani tespachi Daunne katera Barghat, Sunwal, Bhaluhi ani Butwal. Narayanghat bata ali para gae pachi ek thau ma Narayani ko cheu jastai puginthyo ni, tyo thau malai sabai bhanda ramailo lagthyo on that road. Ani kina ho, there were so many bridges that were 32 m long? Binahi Khola ra Arun Khola ko chahi lamo pul haru thiyo. Aru khola haru: Baulaha, Laukaha, Makunde (ek choti truck le pul ma thokedecha, had to cross it kholai bata), Beldiha..birsay aru. I think all those bridges shared a common length of 32 m. The bridges west of Daunne were not labelled except for the one over Bhaluhi Khola.
Bhairahawa to Lumbini ta jamma ek choti travel gareko ho, unlike Ruck, I must have been very lucky that time. Jastai thotro bhae pani bus ta Mercedez hun ni, bigrena ma chadheko bela ta. Leaving from Bhairahawa, the bus needed to be pushed for a few meters before its engine could start. Bus ko speed bhanda awaaj thulo, basu bhane kila ma adkera luga chyattela bhanne dar, ubhera dandi ma samau bhane tesko khiya le tetnus hola bhanne dar. Tesmathi manche kochakoch. Katai bus nai collapse hune ta hoina bhanne dar. Je hos testo kehi pani bhaena. Butwal janay bus pani testai chan ni pheri, khiya pareka ani dhuwa ko muslo bishal chodne.

Maiti ko chat mathi niskera ghar ko chat mathi niskane sanga iska parya ho ki ke!!! in jest hai. When my friend married a neighbour some 1 km away, senior haru le chat prem bhayo ki ke ho bhaneko yaad ayo ke.

maile dhulai dhulo bhanera kachchi sadak (mahendra rajmarga ta ma janda ni pakki nai thyo) ko kura garya haina...tyo sunwal bata dakshin lagya the ek choti bayalgada ma...july ko maina thyo...hawa ra dhulo udera ma sitarne malai dhurukka pareko thyo kya....tyahi bhera tyo gaidakot..daunne hudai..sunwal puge si tyo dhulo ku kuro samjhe....

I don't know if Deep intended this, but this story (and its characters) are a fittin allegory to the current state of our changing country itself. A moving story with a tragic, poetic soul. Good one.

Ruck, since Vivid mentioned PP (aka Kalankisthan), just a thought came to my mind. Jogikuti ko pani tyanki tira prem pareko ta hoina, PP ko Kalanki ko tyanki kholda pareko jasto. Aba Kalika Hall ma film herera bus ma Bhairahawa (presumably that must be your maiti town since you are taking a bus from Butwal) bus ko jhyaal batai ankha judheko ta hoina Jogikuti ma bus rokda? Jhyaalay lup bhanchan kyare hoina teslai?

Have any of you taken either the Pashupati Vinayak or the Yeti bus for travel to Kathmandu? I just remembered two of my school friends (during the late 80's) from the Bhairahawa area who used fight kun chahi bus better bhanera. I did once take the blue and white Pashupati Vinayak bus from Narayanghat to Kathmandu, NA A KH 2182 thiyo tesko number.
Bus kai kura garda have you guys noticed that many of the buses were painted by MK Arts of Butwal. They had their logo of boats on the back corner of the buses.

Tyo sahu le ta bhayankar ko buliding banayechha, bae! 4-5 tallae, modern bulinding with a huge, clean eat-in area! Tyo Dande khola...uhile jamana ma ta dubulki mardai poudi khelthem, ahile ta sewage bhayechha...Bhairawa-Sunauli baato chai aekdam pragati...

Ani lageko thiyen gaon tira Butwal bata euta Mahindra jeep chadera Tansen hundai...tyo jeep ko khalasi le gako geet...Tinau khola bagara, lahure lai maya nagara...Dovan ma aekchhin basauni, timlai ma chhandai chhu ni!!!!!!! Siddha Baba...pranaam! Harek choti tyo bato lage ki ta darshan nagari kasari aghi badne? Tansen aunu 4-5 km agadi dekhi tyo ramaniya Tansen ko drishya...jeep ko pachhadi jhundera siririri hawa khandai! Bartung ma chiya piunda ta euti le side haneki jasto lagyathyo...Tansen...tyo allies! Tyo Haas ko chhoyela...uu mathi kasle ho mention garya...mmmmmm...Srinagar...first kilaas ko ban!
Ani Aaraebhanjyang bata chadeko thiyen bus! Tyo kachi bato ko dhulo khandai...48 kms lai 6 ghanta layera pugeko thiyen Rampur, Palpa! Gadakot, Muhmi, Saankhar, Gajarkot, Kali Gandaki...araeeeeee...gaon sick! :(

ani tyo milan, kalika ra mathi butwal ma movies hernu gako.. first show.. majja aaunthiyo.. chauraha ko momo pasal..mukh ma pani aaaayo... film theatre ma tyo din dinai jhagada.. sochera josh aaayo.. eheh.. feels like to beat the shit outta this khaire whose sitting next to meh in this lab.. :=)

Although I have not lived in Butwal for an extended period of time, have visited frequently. Some family members still reside in different places of the greater Lumbini Anchal. Baru hajur lai arko choti jaanda place to stay chahiyo bhane, let me know :-)
What I meant to write was pawan ko penda also, barfi typo ho hai.
Has anyone climbed up the Daunne danda to visit Daunne devi ko temple? Tyo daunne ko ghumti baata tala herda sadhai bus/gaadi khaslaa ki bhanne katro darr...narrrow turn, uchhai dherai..siringa hunthhyo.
Also poonte's comments brought back some more memories. In childhood days we used to go to Maleng of Palpa (anyone familiar?) for our Kulaayen pooja. Would either walk loooooooong or take risk in riding in gaadi from aarebhanjyang when there was no proper baatos to for gaadis. Have vivid memories of animal sacrifices from kulayen pooja and some natedaars that i have not seen in ages. Baato ma kaafal, ayeselu and katus plentiful hunthhyo, some could just get it off the plants (ayeselu mostly).

Ruck, tehi bhanya..ma ni tyo mandir a couple of time gaa chhu, mostly jaado mahina ma. Did you get to waer tyo dhoja ko maala or what do call it? (maala made out of loose sheet of cloth, mostly red and white)
Poonte hajurba, maile ni hajur lai grandpa tesai bhanya hota shuru dekhi :-)

Sparshaji, ke garne yestai cha mero taal ta, Nepal ko jata pugyo tyahi thau ko maya lagcha, je khayo tesai ma mohani lagcha. Sasurali chahi heru kata hunay ho kunni Mechi ra Mahakali ko bich ma. Lumbini anchal tira paryo bhane pani ramrai ho ni :)

Ruck, thanks for your advice. I am thinking of a Tansen ki Newarni who knows how to make haas ko choela. Along with haas ko choela, sasurali janda Srinagar ko hawa khana paune ta chadai cha. Tesmathi baato ma Daunne ko darshan ra Batauli ko badaam Tinau ko cheu ma khana paine. Ke garne..ki Butwal/Bhairahawa ki lai bihe garu ta? Ki Gulmeli atahwa Arghakhanchi ki lai garu?
