The knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League is starting pretty soon. The English side Man Utd and Arsenal are in terrific form and so are their strikers Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Thierry Henry respectively. Dutch Striker Van Nistelrooy is in absolutely clinical form and the Frenchman Henry is roaring to pace his goalscoring ability to the defense of the Italian, German and Spanish sides that are equally good.

Arsenal are heading the English Premiership right now and Man Utd are right at their tail. Defending champion Real Madrid are a better side then any other team in the world with players like the Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, Player of the year Ronaldo, striker Raul, Morientes and Midfielder Luis Figo, they are the team to beat.

So who will come out victorious in this road to the best Club in the Europe, the champions of Europe, UEFA champions league??

Arsenal have shown much sparkle in and out of premiership. Striker Thierry Henry just finished 100 goals for arsenal in only 149 matches and his roaring to add to his tally. The inspirational mid fielder Frenchman Robert Pires and the Dutch Denis Bergkamp are at the peak of their form. Patrick Vierra is fluent in the middle and so is the goalie England no. 1 David Seaman. With defense like a wall, a team will have to show lots of character to beat Arsenal.

Real Madrid have always been the side to beat. They are probably the richest club in the world as they just bought the Brazilian Ronaldo for lumpsum amount. The Spanish Golden Boy Raul leading from the front, skilled striker Morientes, and the three times player of the year the ever so hungry Zinedine Zidane and Portuguese sensational mid fielder and winger Luis Figo, they certainly have the fire power to beat any side in the world.

My money is on Man Utd though. They are coming good at the right time after that poor start in the premiership. The Dutchman Ruud Van Nistelroory is at his clinical best, and the in form Paul Scholes, Beckam and Veron are right there with there dribbling and finishing skills to support Solskjaer and Nistelrooy at the front. The arrival of Irish and their captain Roy Keane have sparkled the team in the middle and with defender Rio Ferdinand, Jon O Shea protecting defense, its hard to see Sir Alex Fergusen's side loose.

All I am waiting for is a match between Juventus and Manchester United, at the Giants Stadium this summer, July 30 or 31.
krishna Posted on 14-Jan-03 05:57 PM

Yes, thats going to be an absolute cracker and I can't wait to see the Giants from England play against the Italian Giants at the Giants Stadium. Juve, though they are not doing as expected in the Italian league but are defintely the contender to win the Champions League with the fire power they have with Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Del piero leading the front line and players like the Dutchman Edgar Davids and the Czech Midfielder Pavel Nedved in the middle, Juventus are definitely right there. Coach Marcelo Lippi will be looking for a magical performance that has made Juventus FC the Champion of Europe many times. Man Utd will have to show an error free performance to beat Juve who are one of the favorites to lift the trophy once again.

Krishna,

tks for the soccer updates. it's been a long time since we made some noise here during the world cup. pls keep them coming.
ortensia45 Posted on 16-Jan-03 11:46 AM

Krishna just wanted to update u but pippo inzaghi hasn't played for Juve for the last three years. I don't want to be smart or something but I'm a Juve fan and the person who has taken inzaghi's place is an incredible french/argentinian player called (I'm sure any soccer fan knows him) Trezeguet. BTW pippo inzaghi plays for AC Milan now.
krishna Posted on 16-Jan-03 03:23 PM

Ortensia,
I got that from the top of my head so apologize.
Oh btw, his name's not Pippo Inzaghi, if you are a juventus fan. Its Filippo Inzaghi.
Thank you for the update, AC Milan are a good side too. David Trezequet is a good French Stiker. Let me call him a french as he plays for France. Do you remember Euro 2000 where he scored that Golden Goal to make France the only team to win back to back World Cup and Euro 2000. It was fabulous display by the youngsters and was immediately on a transfer list from I think Paris St. Germain, if I am not mistaken, to Juventus. He has scored some very important goals for Juve and has become an important member of the Italian Giants.
Well Good luck on the bid to the European Champions.
DWI Posted on 16-Jan-03 04:37 PM

I didn't know Manchester United was behind the Arsenal squad in the English Premiership. Bergkamp is the only player (and one of the best in European Squad) I know from the team.
Go Manchester United, and we are waiting for your showdown on July. Should be good to see Barthez and Beckham.
By the way who do you think is the best GoalKeeper in the European Premier Leagues right now? or in the world, for that matter?
krishna Posted on 16-Jan-03 11:20 PM

DWI, Very nice question. The best goalkeeper of the world was voted just a month ago by Fifa and Germany's wall Oliver Kahn got the vote, and I don't see why he wouldn't with his amazing display of sheer goalkeeping in the World Cup except for his err in the Final in which he allowed Ronaldo probably the easiest goal he will ever score in the world cup final if Brazil is to reach the Final again.

But my personal favorite last year has got to be USA's Brad Friedel. The man was in sublime touch in the World Cup and the main reason why USA reached so far out with not much fire power they possessed. Ok he was lucky at times, but he was powerful the other. In the English Premiership the man played handsomely against BlackBurn to be voted the premiership goalkeeper of the month several times. He was contributed a lot to the BlackBurn side and also the main reason why BlackBurn is at the middle of the standings where they are right now.

He has been in blistering form throughout the year and its sad that he was in the top ten but not on the top.
ortensia45 Posted on 17-Jan-03 06:05 AM

Krishna I apologise if I wrote pippo but u see in italian the pippo is short for filippo and he is referred to as pippo most of the time. And yes I remember the euro 2000 where Trezeguet scored against italy in the finals. But it looks like Trezeguet will be leaving Juve soon as Manchester has put up an offer for him. That all depends though if Juve will let him go and if the price that Munited is offering is high enough. BTW if anyone is interested, Juve and Manunited they are playing a match in Turin this Monday the 20th, can't wait to see that match.

Rajunpl,

Liverpool are a very good side but their chances of winning the premiership and also reaching the UEFA champions league for this coming year looks very slim. They are currently ranked sixth in the premiership and they have looked completely out of form given the history that they started the premiership looking to stay well clear of the list.

Their form deteriorated at the middle of the year when manager Gerard Houllier gambled with Emile Heskey who was playing so well, replacing him with the Czech youngster Milan Baros. Baros showed lot of class and athleticism at the beginning but later on looked nowhere near his best. This was probably because the future star had just started one of the best league in Europe for the first time in his career and the he wasn't able to handle the pressure he was getting from sideslike Manchester United, Arsenal, NewCastle, Chelsea and even Spurs.

But nontheless, they can produce football at the highest level. They have one of the best mid-field in Europe headed by the untouchable Murphy, the English paceman Steven Gerard, the German inspirational driver Dietmar Hamann and a wonderful backline in the name of the Finnish Sami Hyppia and my favorite back winger who have one of the best athletic left foot in the premiership and probably the whole of Europe the Mr. Norwegian John Arne Riise. His spectacular left footed free kick from 40 yards out against ManUtd in this year's premiership campaign was truely magnificent and only thing Frenchman Barthez could do was to watch it hit the back of the net with a bludgeon. He has netted some outstanding strikes for the Merseysiders in the premiership and have received premiership player of the year couple of times.

I am personally a huge Spurs fan but I have a lot of respect for the Anfield side who beat the Spanish Giants Barcelona in the thriller at Anfield earlier this year when they were going great guns and simply unstoppable. Dutchman Patrick Kuivert's strike early on the match lasted not long when a spectacular volley from Danny Murphy equalized for liverpool and from then on the Football they played was the best I have seen Liverpool produced for atleast a season or two if not more. The Jon Arne Riise's bullet from outside the D-Box put Liverpool ahead and then Michael Owen put them well in front with the clinical strike on the second half followed by a bludgeoning freekick from the German star Hamann. It ended a comprehensive win for Liverpool.

more later..

Thanks, much appreceated Thanks for showing kindness for my liverpool. You know what? when i 've been to liverpool i feel like it's my real home although i am from the endless trail of the mid-western nepal.I always say you good luck for your spurs bur it may hurt you when you saw them always ending-up in the middle of the table at the end of the premiership.

I use to be a mad -fan in the english premiership but now i am cool when i see the liverpool getting down in the middle of the premiership. I hate the premiership now when i saee the sport mag in front of me i wish to chuck it somewhere else.I am quite surprise that you follow the english premiership no matter whichever part of the world you kive in. By the writing of the article I guess that most of them are from the US.I guess mthe nepalese resident fascinates in the superbowl or something like that.

You can see the championship is also the major sport league in the world . Once upon a time there use to be a liverpool everywhere UEFA,championship, premiership or the FA Cup.LIvepool is generated by the name of the bird called LIVER which was used to be found in liverpool.

You can say that manch. utd. will do it but barthez appear to be mad-barthez. You may loose in the end of the day. Arsenal.........! yes, they can do it they have the luck now. Weger is having the better days now although there are some breadth taking team.Owen is haning a deep rest now .

see you later chap . I am quite surprise.
krishna Posted on 21-Jan-03 01:20 PM

ya i follow premiership quite closely....though not always i get to watch the live matches but i keep track with the bbc sport's site...did you watch Celtic vs. Ranger's game.....it was another thriller....one of great scottish premier league matches i have ever seen....it was phenomenal stuff..celtic netted first in only 19 seconds in the clock but Rangers well 2-1 ahead within half an hour with a spectacular equalizer from Dutchman Ronald de boar and then Michael Mols netted the Ranger's second....then they were suddenly 3-1 ahead before the half time....celtic pulled one back through the swedish superman Henrik Larsson, but it wasn't enough...but what an awesome goal scorer he is...he was the top goalscorer in Europe the last couple of season....amazing athlete and equally good finisher..manager Martin O Neal paid him handsomely to buy him from one of the swedish club..and he showed his worth within the first season netting 30 strikes of quality, the most by any player in the SPL and he followed it with 35 the next...he has been consistently scoring for Celtic when they won the SPL last two season but this season Rangers have come back to lead the SPL and looking good to snatch victory from their arch rivals...whatever the conclusion might be...the last two games i have watched these two teams play have been a thriller..the last time it was 3-3 at Celtic Park..this time it was 3-2 Rangers at Glasgow.....

more.....later...
