Even though the 'beneficiary', as it were, of this whole mess is Gyanendra and his hated son Paras, it appears that Deependra did all the killings last Friday night -- killing first his father, leaving the room, and then coming back to kill others. Nirajan seemed to have died, trying to save his mother, who was shot last. The whole thing, according to sources at the Royal Palace, took about 30-40 seconds to end. Deependra's actions need to be seen in terms of dangerously short-circuited synapses, and NOT to pre-planned consipracy of some sort. True, Gyandra's illiberalism and his professed Mahendra-ism make people wonder whether he or Paras 'staged' this all to claim power for themselves. Added to this is Deependra's own long-standing image of a very likable guy. But the truth seems really bizarre and shocking: Deependra did this all in a moment of blind, murderous calmness before coming to his senses to attempt to take his own life. At any rate, Deependra is now officially dead, and the crowd in Kathmandu is agitated/angry enough NOT to let his body be cremated. Meantime, Paras is UNACCEPTABLE as the Crown Prince, and, forced by these extraordinarily bizarre turns of events, maybe it's time for Nepal to do away with the tradition of monarchy itself. King Birendra was a good King -- a gentleman's getleman. May his soul rest in peace. oohi ashu
