Hello Everyone,

Consider I am bored. Consider I've got nothing better to do in such a fine Saturday morning. All my friends must be recovering from last-night’s hangover. The Movie Theater is not open yet, the library is closed and I can’t go out for a walk, unless I am really interested on freezing my butt.

I remember one of the chatters advised me a long time ago – do the cooking. I’ve been surviving upon the junk food so far, and it would be a real break-through for me to cook. Although I can cook, I don’t really want to do that in such a fine Saturday morning. For an Instance, I thought I should make “aduwa chiya”, courtesy to recipe provided by SitaraJyu. On the second thought, I am not a Chiya Guy, not in the early morning when I really want to wake up. I preferred something Strong, Coffee.

I don’t want to go back to bed and take a nap either. I’ve found the most interesting thing some guys want to do is to take a nap at any given time of the day. I can’t simply sleep during the day. Period. There is nothing much you can do, if you are at home, and you don’t want to sleep, and you don’t want to flip channels and you don’t want to stay on the Internet.

So what should I really do? Work out? Well I don’t really want to sweat myself in such a fine morning. I don’t really want to waste my morning cleaning up my messed up room either. My room is really messy, the clothes piled up one over another, the books lying all over the places, undone bed, bunch of CD-R and CD-RW lying all over my desk. There is my guitar, covered with dust, waiting for my attention. I am simply not in the mood. I would have cleaned my room, but I thought it ruined my morning. I even thought about going to get a life, but I don’t really understand the meaning of getting a life. I asked one of my friends, how do you get a life, he replied, “Just go and hit the sack”. Okay.

So now what???
Lets talk about movies.
Watched too many movies in 2002. The good movies like “Adaptation”, the worst movies like “Men In Black 2” and “Kong Pow”.

Some of the movies I enjoyed back in 2002 were,
1. Adaptation: Great movie, great performance, and great screenplay. Hats off to Spike Johnz and the writer of the movie, Charlie Kaufman. It was simply great.
2. 25th Hours: Edward Norton at his best. This movie was like reading a book. A really good book. I’d most probably read this book too. Great tribute to NYC – a silent tribute in each an every frame of the movie. Spike Lee rocked.
3. Minority Report: Always been a fan of Spielberg. I loved this movie – a sci-fi, dark, who-dun-it thriller. It’s dark, as good as the Blade Runner.
4. Catch me if you can: Spielberg again. A simple movie. Don’t expect anything extraordinary in the movie. It has a great photography, a great performance, and it’s so simple – watch it and feel good.
5. Insomnia: Al Pacino and Robin Williams at their best. The screenplay was so good that even I knew the whole story; every scene in the movie surprised me.
6. Road to Perdition: Dark movie, the father-son relationship was worth watching.
7. Panic Room: Another dark thriller, great time pass.
8. Punch-drunk-love: Unlike any Adam Sadler’s movie, this one is a great love story.
9. Transporter: If you like an action movie and you missed this one, then you have missed one great action movie of the year. Fast paced action movie, I found it better than much hyped XXX.
10. Signs: creepy. Silence is much scarier than sound.
11. Bourne Identity: Fast paced spy-action movie. Matt Damon is great, and the girl is hot.
12. Spider Man: Simply the best movie of the year, nothing less than the comic book. Desperately waiting for Spiderman 2.
13. Chicago: Loud, Musical, it has great performance and great presentation. Feels like you are watching a Broadway musical.

I also liked xxx, Die another day, The sum of All fears, Spy Games, Solaris, Gangs of NY, The Piano teacher (uhhh), Unfaithful (sexy sexy sexy), Undisputed, About Schmidt (budha haru ko movie), Blood work, One-hour photo, Blade 2.

I haven’t seen the ring, The Hours, The confessions of the dangerous mind yet though.

Okay times up, it’s almost an afternoon. Gone is my one fine Saturday Morning. I am going out to search the meaning of life.

Prem Pujari.

(Some must be thinking have I gone mad? Well, no not really. Just wanted to write something, which I did. I made myself happy, and I feel happy about it. I think I got life. What say?)

PP ji,
Actually the best thing to pass the time when you want to do no other things to spoil the morning is writing. So, how do you feel after spilling all those rumblings hovering in your mind for so long? Relieved isn't it??
Guitar raicha, yeso
Jindagee kati rangeen cha.......bhandai geet gaye pani ta bho ni.
Hajur ko rini, uhi.

VIVID jyu,
You are right. I am left, unspoken. I am trying hard, but the words won’t come out. I am choking now, everyone’s looking now. And I am friggin’ back to reality. Did I just write that or did I just write that?

Truth about my guitar,

In the year of ’00, one of those precious days when I happen to read newspaper (which happens once in a blue moon), my eyes stuck to this commercial. GRAND OPENING OF MUSICAL STORE – MARS. Best Acoustic guitars for only $100.

Thanks to too many Hindi movies I grew up with, I always wanted to play guitar. I was mesmerized to see how MITHUN CHAKRAVARTHY was inspired to RETTTING guitar in that movie DISCO DANCER – what was the song? Kishne, Dharti pe aaja tuuu…. Aanch. Boy o Boy, Kyaaa guitar reting, my jaws dropped on the floor. (I am getting braces soon, to get that jaws fixed – and I ain’t no lyin’). And there was Govinda, maah hero number 1. Nepali ko jwai hero (his wife is Nepali), Bhinaju bhane ni huncha, if you consider his wife a sister. I call him saadhu dai. Hope he has shaali. J. Anyway, remember the way he carried that guitar upon his shoulder through out the song in “ghar main raam gali main shyaam” movie? I wanted to carry it just like he did, like Hanuman carried his gadhaa (not Ass – Reminding it to myself so that I won’t get confused later on). I wanted to carry that guitar and get a nice photograph taken in Pipal Bot muni ko Photo Center (??). And there was our very own Amitabh Bachchan. Remember his Ganga Jamuna Saraswoti? He played a guitar like no one ever did. He had friggin’ GLOVES on, full glove, and no, he was not playing rhythm with that hand, he was just “grabbing” the fret and the whole six strings. Man, he played like Mozart. (Question of the week, did Mozart ever play guitar? Hell If I know, that’s why I am asking).

So, back to the year of ’00, I went to the MARS store. It was a brand new store, and they had everything – every kind of Musical Instruments and Gadgets and accessories. They had a separate room for Guitars -- Glass room. Everyone in that room was playing with guitar. They had all kinds of guitar, Acoustic, semi-classical, electric, you name it. They even had guitars signed by Slash, Sheryl Crow etc. I thought everyone in that room was as good guitar player as AMITABH. I was Walla PARING guitar STARING… Tulutulu… interrupted by this sales person. I asked him about the guitar on sale for $100, and he gave me a sarcastic look, the room is full of guitars and this dumb bum is lookin’ for the one on sale. Malai ni tyasko look dekhne bittikai rananana rish uthyo. Nepali Blood Boiling. I x-ray checked the money I had earned from DMO job. $600 in my bank. I can spend $500 – Josh aayo!! Maile ni how about uu tyo, showed him one guitar. He asked me, you wanna try it? I said yes – ek, do, teeen, char, paan, che, saat baajai di, eutai string ma. His jaws dropped. He took the guitar from me and he played, some stupid country song. I gave no baal. I said, okay I want this. My $310 gone. He asked me if I want a guitar case, hell yes. The cheapest one was 25 bucks. I grabbed it. There was a hole in the guitar, I asked him what is this, he said you can play it like electric guitar, do you want chord for that? I said hell yeah. $15 for chord. Gone was my $350.

Guitar lyaai ghar ma. Took it out from the case, played “lai bari lai” for 2 days, and since then it’s been lying at the corner of my room, gently weeping. It’s been three years. Heard that MARS store was out of business… and they are selling everything in the store on Sale. I am thinking about visiting it again. Maybe, I get lucky. You never know on Sale.

No I haven’t got the chance to take a picture. Why? I have to go back to Kathamandu, Photo Center ni, so I am waiting for the day I go back to Nepal.

I’ll show it to everyone.

PP ji,
This time, if you really go to that MARS store, look for a harp. At least, if you just place it at one of the corners in your room, it will enliven your room. Also, everynight an angle will descend from thy heaven to sing a lullaby on that harp for you, hoping to increase the boiling point of your blood so that even when you reach an elevated temperature of 50dc you won't spend your earning just for nothing, re kya ajha last ma.
In jest hai, feri mero kamai jasari kharcha garaun na bhannu hola, daarai lagcha bhane, bolyo ki polyo bhanchan, :)

So is there a conspiracy or PremPujari did you also not see Lord of the Rings? I just saw that the Golden Globes were yesterday and the LTR only got one nomination and no wins! How absolutely ridiculous is that. Of course the whole genre is not your mainstream hollywood type so maybe thats why... can't say it was not as good as "Gangs of New York"... not that I saw gangs. But from the reviews it sounded like there were historical inaccuracies and over acting. anyhow, I am disapointed that the Lord of the Rings did not get an award, not that I would have expected Hollywood to recognize talent and great story telling.

I don't know about golden globe, but I've seen LOTR and loved LOTR. Kasari chutyo thaha bhayena...!! I didn't really read what i wrote ni, :) ONE TAKE OKAY ni. Sorry about that, But I consider LOTR all three parts as a same movie. I enjoyed it last year, so Obviously i enjoyed it this year and I'll enjoy it next year. I just forgot to write the LOTR in my list... and there is another great movie I missed "My big Fat Greek Wedding", simple and hilarious, feel-good-movie. hehe.

about Golden Globe,
>>Screenplay: Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, "About Schmidt."
Golden Globe ma tannai budha haru chan jasto cha, Adaptation has way far better screenplay than About S.., Even Insomnia has greatest Screenplay, So did 25th hour... how does About S win it. Tara je bhaeni Mero bau ko ke nai gayo re kyaa ajha laast ma.. hehe

Prempujuri,
Sometime you gotta watch movies that are not so new. Try Rushmore( or sometihing). Its of Bill Moorie( i am sure the last name is spelled wrong). The movie is about a, may be 15 yrs kid, who falls in love with his Teacher. The good thing is Teacher totally understands his feeling. But understand his feeling doesnt mean that she accepts it too. Bill Moorie is that kids friend. I suppose that kid has something for older people. And the story goes on. You might like it.

Yeah, you'd better watch it, Suna.

And chalk up another vote for Girls Who Stay Home ... it's not only the comfort of my own looney bin, it's $3 or whatever versus $7 per person plus a babysitter. Methinks not.

Last thing I saw in the theater was "Attack of the Clones." With the whole gang. Hubby, kid, and in-laws (who don't speak a word of English, but what the heck, they followed the plot anyway.) And at least ONE character had a comprehensible name! Yoda. Think about it.

I'd like to see "Lord of the Rings" on the big screen, though. After the lines shrink a bit.

Multitasking in the loony bin it is!!!... at least for me...

Most unromantic moments: Folding laundry (eases the pain) or reading class notes (numbs the boredom)!

Most romantic moments: Watching cuddled up, red wine.... pillows and throw cushions.... and whatever floats your romantic boats ;)

Would the discerning viewers here please clue me in on just what was so wonderful about Adapatation ?

Before the fans go on the warpath, please accept that its my failing in being unable to comprehend what the whole brouhaha is about. I am not being am being sarcastic or provocative. Just very puzzled.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind has an outstanding performance from its main character, and the supporting cast does a marvellous job too. Sure, the story line has a few holes one can drive a bulldozer through, but still, its the performances that carried the movie. Critics of actors turned directors will eat crow: George Clooney has done a smooth job.

About Gangs of NY..its historically sound, the action and story line are finely scripted. Yes, gory, but realistic. Yes, the world is a dangerous place and civilization is a veneer that can be discared quickly by some.

For lovers of suspense, try out this old one: Death on the Nile, which has Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow and others in it.

Anyone for Peter Sellers ? Try Prisoners of Zenda, again, another old one, but laughs galore.

Wicked ones - A Fish Called Wanda, All of Me, Meet Joe Black, The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox..

Wow chap you explained your whole morning. you said you didn't like to hang on the internet but your explanation said you did.I like the way you described about your whole morning and that's the way life goes through most of us.I have the same feeling sometime.I don't understand what should i go next after.I use to be addicted to songs and spent whole lonesome morning in songs.Sometime i feel so energitic that I thought i could simply run for hour and hour to the seashore in the same saturday morning.

Once i did heard a song can't remember who sing it " I am easy and easy like sunday morning"There's not much different between sunday and the saturday both are consider as a holiday except you want to earn extra for your living.Specially in the summer outch! I donwana memorise those good old days in this chilly winter.Sometime i feel good and so good that I would do anything that come across.I guess its all matter of mood or something.

The movies...............?yes, i frequently see them when i don't get sleep in night.Rarely in afternoon.I am so busy in work sometime i don't think much about them. I use to be a movie lover when i was teenager.Still nothing wrong.Moreorless i have seen the movies the pp jyu explained.GLADIATER,yes it was a good movies about the romans time and how the gladiaters were treated.sixth sense, stigmata, patriot and i can't remember now about whatelse.

Yesterday was the best day. No, I didn’t hit the lottery. No, I didn’t do anything worth praising. Yesterday, all day long, I had the same mood; I was happy – Just happy. Past few days, the weather was so bad, the temperature went south, and cold wind was a killer.
I felt like a-headless-featherless-chicken walking in the freezer, whenever I had to walk to my car. I understood the meaning of frozen to my butt. And there I go; I had a great brand-new original and innovative idea on how to kill yourself -- Just take off your clothes, take off your shoes, stand stark naked outside in that freezing temperature for about 10 minutes, and in 15 minutes you will be officially dead. How does that sound? No, I don’t want to try that yet. I’ll save that until my first wedding anniversary.

Anyway, yesterday I woke up, anticipating the chilly weather was going to challenge me one more time. I was getting used to this kind of weather day by day. So, I got out of my house around noon, well equipped and ready to fight the weather, and to my surprise, it was one pleasant day. Sun was shinning bright, and the temperature rose like Elizabeth Hurly. (I didn’t get it)

I went to watch “the confessions of a dangerous mind”, A movie directed by George Clooney. After I watched the movie, I came home and the first thing I did was, I searched for “Charlie Kaufman”. Charlie Kaufman scripted this movie and he is the same Charlie Kaufman I praised a week or two ago for his bizarre writing in Adaptation. Charlie Kaufman is the former television writer, who has four movies to his credit.
1. Being John Malkovich
2. Human Nature
3. Adaptation
4. Confessions of a dangerous mind.
He wrote four movies, I’ve watched 3 of them, including Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, and I’ll watch Human Nature as soon as possible. Being John Malkovich is a classic, path-breaking movie, and a classic bizarre movie.

Bizarre movies, bizarre in a sense of screen writing.

I always thought screenplay of the movie is the most important aspect in the filmmaking. If one doesn’t have good script, the movie just nose-dives. Why is a director more popular than screen writer? Because director has to bring the whole plot conceived by the writer on the screen, exactly as or even better than a writer thought of it. Remember “A beautiful Mind”? The movie is about a mathematician, and there is the sense of complex mathematical formula through out the movie, either it can be seen on the screen, or heard in the dialogue, or in the background music. That’s where the brain of director works overtime.

Talking about the bizarre movie, those movies which are so unconventional in a sense of screenplay writing. Some of the great movies from that genre are:
1. Pulp Fiction: remember the movie starts from the end I think, and there is the beginning, and there is the ending. But, the movie is totally understood, and everything in that movie makes sense. A classic movie.
2. Run Lola Run: This German movie has one long scene of about 15 minutes. That scene is repeated through out the movie, in a various angle. Everytime it shows that scene again, it opens a brand new door in the screenplay. Amazing and Brilliant.
3. Momento: What can I say about the movie like this, which starts from the end of the story and at the end of the movie, it shows the beginning of the story. This movie is simply a Reverse, the story just moves from the end to the beginning. Yet it is suspense, and if you miss one scene in the movie, it will surely confuse you. To make the matter worse, there is another track of the movie, which goes parallel to the screenplay, which starts from the beginning and moves towards end. This movie is really unconventional – my all time favorite.
4. Adaptation: Why adaptation, because its unconventional. Almost everything in the movie is real. I mean real characters. WHEN ONE WATCHES THIS MOVIE, he/she has to understand that “The Orchid Thief” is a real book by a real writer “Susan Orleans” played by Meryl Streep. Nicholas Cage plays “Charlie Kaufman” and Charlie Kaufman is a screenplay writer. The movie is about a brilliant screenplay writer “Charlie Kaufman”, who is trying to adopt a REAL book “The Orchid Thief”. Every character, everything in the movie is real, except the movie is not real, the story of the movie is not real.
(These are some of the movies on the top of my head right now – Most people probably don’t like it, Rude it may sound, but what I like the most, matters most to me. I am selfish.)

And now, here comes a movie written by same screenplay writer, Charlie Kaufman – “Confessions of a dangerous mind”. The movie is biopic, based upon an unauthorized autobiography by Chuck Barris. Who the CHUCK?? Well, Chuck is the creator of the popular television game shows like The Gong Show and The Dating Game. You can still catch it on the television, on Game-TV, or some other channel, which is known for repeating old television shows like “I love you Lucy”. Okay, what is so great about his biography? Well nothing, except the biography is unauthorized and Chuck has made some tall claims (??) in the biography. He said he has worked for CIA as a hit man, and has killed about 33 people in the various part of the world. Like “Adaptation” is based upon “the orchid thief”, a confession… is based upon Chuck’s biography, and the so-called “TALL CLAIMS” made by him. It may sound like a biopic, but it is not a biopic, and Charlie Kaufman creates the whole screenplay based upon his biography. (Urghhh), Before you watch this movie, understand who is Chuck and who is Charlie Kaufman. This will surely spin your head at the end of the movie. Great Screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, and great job done by a novice director like George Clooney. George is known for his pranks, and he just plays a prank with his viewers through out the movie. (Don’t want to reveal anything about the movie, but there is one scene, a scene from the dating game. This girl, she can’t see the three guys on the other side of the wall, but she can hear them. She has to choose one guy out of 3 for the date. 2 of the guys are Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon, but the third guy, who is average looker, is a real smooth talker, and he is doing all the talking and he impresses girl – It’s just reminded me of the Chat room.) The movie is hilarious throughout. George Cloony uses Symbols through out the movie!

But what shines the most in the movie is, Photography and Camera work. Photography is great, every fame of the movie shines, every frame of the movie looks like an abstract photography. The movie spans from 1940’s till today, and they have used different color to represent each decade. Just notice the color change of the movie. The color of the movie represents the time in the movie. For example, there is a scene from 1940, when Chuck was a kid. This scene is kind of like gold in color. Later, Chuck remembers his parents during the 40’s, and they use the same color.

Camera work is so unconventional; it doesn’t follow the camera work from the old school. Sam Rockwell (The main bad guy in the “char lies angel” movie) did a great job portraying the character of Chuck.

Loved this movie ni!!!

I can't believe what happened yesterday, Superbowl Sunday!!

I was all prepared to watch superbowl, paleti Kashera, holding Budweiser (official beer of superbowl). Around 3 PM, I got a call from work, "Hey Prempujari, wanna work, if yes, report to work by 5". I thought about it for a while -- and made my mind. Since, my TEAM Giants was gone, and Even Jets couldn't make it, I didn't have no favourite in yesterdays game. It was snowing like crazy, and I told myself I should go work and make some money. Hell with Bucs and Raiders!

So I took a shower, put on my clothes, and went to work. As I got to work, everyone was waiting for me. No, it was not my b'day yesterday and I didn't expect any surprise party. As I entered the door, one of my MITHUN colleague asked for 5 bucks and asked me to choose the number. According to him, If the total of buc's and raider's score is what I chose, I'll get the money -- cool $100. I said what the heck, I chose 69 (don't work your dirty mind). Everyone laughed at me. Its a final and it will be a tough game and the score will never reach that high. And say what? the TOTAL was freakin' coool 69. Myaaan I am rich.

Anyway, I got a chance to watch the most part of the game, and they had cool commercials. I got the chance to watch commercials from 4 highly anitipated movies this summer. And those commercial looks coool.... myaan I am waiting for summmer...
Waiting for
1. MATRIX
2. HULK
3. BAD BOYS 2
4. CHARLIES ANGELS

all of those previews looks cooolllll!!! Dyaang!!

Khimberly,
Taking up on your lament about why quality movies don’t get made in Nepal, especially your reference to stories that abound about the Rana-period etc.

Aspiring film-makers and story writers may be interested to know that Disney Studios has on its roster a very talented Nepali who supervises the animation section or thereabouts. Two years ago he had flown into town with Spielberg (Steven, of course) and we were to have a bit of a get together. Unfortunately, due work commitments I was unable to attend.

However, the upshot of that evening was the fellow came up with a proposition : come up with a viable movie theme based on Nepali culture, history, mythology, whatever.

He felt so strongly about the richness of our culture, mythology and history and felt we had really wonderful things to share with the world. Yet when both Disney and Steven both asked him to come up something he came up empty handed.

Movies, Of course my all-time favourite pastime :)

Lord of the Ring... the first based-on-a-book-movie for which I actually liked the movie better than the book.2nd book " The Two Towers " ta jyan gaye padhera sakkauna sakina.Read 70% hola, bich ma kati wota lines, paragraphs ra pages skip gardai.....dherai descriptive bhayera hola, tyo sab ek-ek wota line padhne patience nai bhayena. The movie summarized it all, of course afu le kitaab padhda afnai kisim le imagine garincha tehi pani the movie was great. Eagerly waiting for the 3rd one to come out. Dying to know what'll happen to Frodo... will he die or not ? ...kasaile pyaaccha bhanne haina hai feri :)..sab majja flop huncha. 1st part ma Legolas ko fan , 2nd part ma Aragorn ko fan ma ta .... let's see who will I drool for in the 3rd part :)

Watched " Hot Chick" recently......it was worth the time and money.... hasda hasda theatre ma... my favourite part was the line " Can I see it ? " :D

"A Walk to Remember".... the soundtrack is great, movie was so-so, enjoyed the book better than the movie(as always). Some of my friends actually cried while watching that movie but I guess I have stopped being so emotional these days :)

"Harry Potter" ko series were also good, Okay I know it's supposed to be for the kids but I truly thoroughly loved those books. Movies were quite fun too but they simply can't be compared to the books.

Ahile the Chinese movie "Hero" is out on theatre...saathi haru sab jana le ramro cha bhandai chan. I would have loved to watch it if it was dubbed in English, tara tyo sub-title padhnu paryo bhaney ramrari concentrate nai garna sakidaina. That's why a bit hesitant to go for it.

Talking about Nepali movies, I don't know when was the last time I saw one :(...oh watched 'Caravan' abt 2 years ago, tyo bahek I think Shiva Shrestha ko 'Chino' was the last Nepali movie I watched ages ago!!

Thanks everyone, for replying on my JPT's.

Nepali ma kina ramro ramro movie bandaina???

Nepali Viewers are connected with hindi movies. Nepali movies will never be better until hindi movies are better. unless some Nepali movie modifies the genre. This is unlikely to happen.

How many people would go watch spiderman -- dubbed in Nepali, regardless of the fact that it made $400Million in US box office? Who would watch "An American Beauty -- (I loved this movie so much, that HBO keeps on showing it for me almost once a week :)), American beauty made in hindi -- Nobody gives a damn about its hilarious moments, screenplay and pace of the movie. Where is the "masala", "wohi maar-dhaar, song, dance rape wape--)

One of the Nepali movies I loved was "Paraal ko Aago". It was a hit movie, and simply a classic Nepali movie... These kinds of movie will still survive in Nepali movie industy, A pure and typical Nepali movie. But who's gonna make it??

Paral ko aago, Manko baandh and Kumari are some classic Nepali movies.

Hindi Movie viewers,
watch "Bombay Boys" and "Hydrabad Blues" -- coool movies, without songs and dances, and some big time MITHUNS.
I heard "everybody says I'm fine" is also good.
:)

oscar nominations are out, and i felt like bringing this topic out front. can't believe chicago got 13 nominations -- yes it's a decent movie, but i didn't think it was gonna be this big at oscars. i couldn't help comparing it to moulin rouge, which i thought was just great!! catherine zeta was great, and richard gere not so much..

i thought adaptation was going to a few more - my favorite this year. great work by kauffman on the script, pulling off an incredibly complex work. such a refresher to see an intellegent and engaging work!

(thought i was gonna write more, but...)

Hum-ba-ba,
Thanks for responding.
It’s good to see that I am not the only one who appreciated such a brilliant movie – Adaptation. Yes, the nomination is out, and it surprised me big time.

In the best movie category, they have “Lord of the Rings”. I liked the movie, but there are other better movies, which should have made the list instead of LOTR. For example, Adaptation, The Confession of The Dangerous Mind, Moonlight Mile, Insomnia, Road to perdition, 25th hour, Antwone Fisher, to name the few. Among the nomination, I am sure Chicago will win. How ever, I personally think Gangs of NY should win.

Among the directors, my choices are either Roman Polanski or Martin Scorcece. One of them should win, because they have proved themselves time and again, yet, Oscars never recognized their talent. Chicago has a nice presentation, but I doubt it wins.

Among the best Actors, I won’t be surprised if Jack Nicholson wins for “About Schmidt”. But, he has slim chance to win, since he had already won twice. Although, I haven’t seen “The Pianist” and “The Quiet American”, my choice is Daniel Day-Lewis for "Gangs...". Of course, second choice is “Nicholas Cage” for “Adaptation”. Last couple of years, Oscars hasn’t been fair in this category. In the year 2000, Denzel Washington at his best in “The Hurricane” lost to Russell Crowe for “Gladiator”. In the year 2001, Russell Crowe should have won for such a beautiful performance in “A Beautiful Mind”, and he lost to Denzel Washington for “Training day”. I am great admirer of Denzel Washington’s performance, but he should’ve been awarded where it dues. Performance wise, “The Hurricane” was more powerful than “Gladiator”, and “The Beautiful Mind” was more powerful than “The Training day”.

Among the Supporting actors, Chris Cooper might win for “The Adaptation”. He was great in that movie. My personal favorite is “Christopher Walken” in “Catch Me If You Can”. He was brilliant in that movie, and the restaurant scene with Leonardo De-Caprio is memorable. I’d love if “Ed Harris” won. He’s my all time favorite actor.

Among Best Actress, It’s going to be a tough competition between Renee Zellweger and Nichole Kidman for Chicago and The Hours respectively. However my personal favorite is Diane Lane. She was awesome in The Unfaithful. Nichole Kidman was never a good actress; I was surprised when she was nominated for “Moulin Rouge”. In “The Hours”, I don’t think she acted any better only because she changed her looks and nose.

Among the Supporting actress, only choice is “Catherine Zeeta Johns”. She was awesome in “Chicago” and through out the movie, she was never overshadowed by the brilliant performance of Renee Zellweger and Queen Latifa. She should win; she might win, because she is very powerful right now. Among others, Kathy Bates was good in “About Schmidt”.

Among Best animated feature film, ICE AGE……. Yesss!!!

Among Adapted Screenplays, “Adaptation” and “Adaptation” only. Surprised to see “Confession of the Dangerous Mind” missing from the list, and so was “25th Hour”.

Among the Original Screenplay, I can’t say much cause I haven’t seen “Yu Tu Mama Tambin”, “Talk To Her” and “Far from Heaven” yet. I heard all of these movies are great. Between “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “Gangs Of NY”, I’d go for latter one.

Among Art Direction, It’s amazing to see “Minority Report” and “Confession of the Dangerous Mind” was missing. Even “Catch me if you can” was great – so detailed with 50’s and 60’s. Among the nominees, I’d go for “Road to Perdition” rather than “Gangs”.

Among Cinematography, again, “Confession…” was missing. It was one of the best cinematographed movies made in the recent year. I’d go for “Road to Perdition”.

Costumes and Makeup ko ke kura garaai bho. “Time Machine” made it to the make up and “Star Wars” was missing.

Among best editing, I’d go for “Catch me if you can”. The movie was very simple, and slick editing was really important to make such a smart movie.

Best Original Score, “Catch me if you can”!! The progressive jazz went well with the mood of the movie, and the characters. Brilliant. “Spider Man” for sound and visual effects, and “Minority Report” for Sound Editing.

Very much surprised to see “Moonlight miles”, “Insomnia”, “Confession of dangerous minds”, and “25th hours”, and even “8 mile” missing from the list.

Lets see, Who wins!!!

:)

(damn snow days)

Hey Raju jyu,
I don't mind ke. Mind garne mind nai chaina. I was just wondering when did you say that?
Hindi movies dherai heryaa chaina, latest herya "Kaante" and "Saathiya". "Reservoir's Dog" heryo pachi "kaante" ke herai bho, "Kaante" sucked big time. Althought It was better than other hindi movies. Watched "Saathiya" only for the songs, and the song picturization sucked big time.

HUM-BA-BA jyu,
I'd love to read more from you. Please do write.
hum-ba-ba Posted on 18-Feb-03 01:59 PM

thanks for urging prempujari; i was feeling a little lazy to write. it is certainly disappointing not to see adaptation on the list for the best movie category. it's one of a kind. first there is the book itself, the orchard thief, that is being adapted; then the writer kauffman that is struggling to adapt the book and his opposite-in-every-way brother; then the characters from two different planes are brought together. furthermore, the movie that comes out is the adaptation that the character in the book is shown to be working towards. and all this complex self-referential work comes out amazingly well!(can you tell how much i am struggling to just say that!) i haven't watched the confessions of a dangerous mind, but i can't wait! i liked 25th hour too. it's the first time i have seen new york/ sept 11 in a movie, and done such subtlety! ed norton is great as he is always, but what i loved most was semour hoffman. great coversation scenes at the bar. and how can i forget rosario dawson - she is hot!!

one of the movies that i hated this year was gangs of new york, with all due respect to scorcese(sp?). i started yawning half and hour into the movie, and was a torture to spend 3 hours of gory shit that was going nowhere.(that came out a little harsh) i couldn't believe some of the reviews that praised it so much. and i believe you prempujari, it's probably gonna run with the best director, but this was no way close to some of his goodies.
hum-ba-ba Posted on 18-Feb-03 02:04 PM

and yeah, loved chistopher walken in catch me if you can!
PremPujari Posted on 18-Feb-03 02:36 PM

Damn dude,
you think the same way I think about the movie. It's like listiening to the self-reflection. You are so right about adaptation, It's so hard to tell the feeling that one gets after seeing that movie. I loved that movie. If you liked adaptation, you will love "confession...). It is also by Charlie Kauffman.

Yes, I felt the same way about Gangs of NY. I went to the theater keeping in mind that this movie is going to be good coz all previous Scorcece's movies were awesome. So, through out the movie, I told myself that the movie is awesome, but deep inside, I was like, damn, Scorcece missed the touch. You know what i mean. It doesn't have that "thing", that punch line or some kinda great scene (like "are you talkin' to me" scene in Taxi Driver) that gives you sort of satisfaction. And, yes, I think Scorcece's going to win.

And, Walken was great in "CMIYC". He won for "deerhunter", a classic movie. Now, I hope he wins for this one. That particular scene I was talkin' about just proves that good actors don't need the whole movie to show his mettle. One scene, and he hit the jackpot.

Try "Fargo" dude. It's awesome Movie.

thanks for replying.
hum-ba-ba Posted on 18-Feb-03 02:46 PM

man, loved fargo -- i just watched blood simple from the cohen brother a couple of days back (it's an old flick) - has francis mcdormand, who looks like a baby in it. it's pretty good if you haven't already watched it!
prem charo Posted on 18-Feb-03 08:02 PM

Ya Ya ..keep bla bla blaing. Don't you have anything nice to say about Nepali movie ?
Shame On you guys/girls.
hum-ba-ba Posted on 18-Mar-03 01:55 PM

if your stomach can take gory violence, and if you liked flicks like scarface and godfellas, check out city of god! based on the poverty striken slums of rio de janerio, this brazillian flick traces the life of a young kid that likes photography amongst other desperate young kids that have picked up guns and gangster lifestyles very early. struggles in the gangs of new york seems like a cake walk in front of the struggles that characters in city of god go through. i have to say, i was a little freaked out by the violence, but the story is so real that it mesmerizes you.
PREMPUJARI Posted on 24-Mar-03 04:08 AM

hum-ba-ba,
I am sorry, I missed your reply. I'll try to watch "city of god" in summer!!
Thanks.
PREMPUJARI Posted on 24-Mar-03 05:43 AM

And the winners are official.

The most shocking for me was, Eminem winning the best song from the motion pictures soundtrack category, for "Loose yourself" (8 mile). I was sure that he won't win, but he did. Hats off to him for such a great song. He deserved it.

I was right about most of the categories... Haven't seen "THE PIANIST" yet, for which Adrien Brody won the best actor category (plus, Bonus for smooching Halley Berry on the stage... LOL. Halley Berry was shocked). Roman Polanski finally made it. It was either him or Mr. Scorsese. Polanski is senior to Scorsese, probably thats the reason why Polanski was awarded rather than Scorsese (Both of them have never won). Seems like Scorsese will end up being Hitchcock. Hitchcock never won the Oscar. Probably, He will fetch the special award in coming years (like Otool did yesterday). "Adaptation" couldn't make it to winners list in best adapted screenplay category -- But I still recommend that movie. Conard L. Hall won best cinematography category for "Road to Perdition", best choice. I watched that movie in late summer, and I could feel my feet turning Cold.

So it's finally over. hmmmm.....

My 3 fav movies last year were
Adaptation
Confessions of a dangerous mind
Minority Report.
ehh.

Laterz!@!
hum-ba-ba Posted on 24-Mar-03 08:06 AM

Only caught the last half hour of the oscars, but yeah Brody just went nuts on the stage. Good for him!:) I haven't seen Pianist either - I am very reluctant to watch war flicks. Will have to check it out at least. But I was rooting for Michael Cane. I watched A Quiet American a few days back, and liked it a lot. (even though this one's also set on battlefields) And I did catch Confessions of a dangerous mind, Prempujari, and enojyed it a lot! George Clooney seems to have done a good job on his debut as a director.

too bad michael caine did not get the oscar for the quiet american. definitely a well-done movie and very timely (given america's war on iraq). the symbolism and the metaphors are beautifully presented.

hum-ba-ba and prempujari, definitely agree that gangs of new york had to much "senseless" gore, but i did like the nuances about the power politics of new york and america of that time..things that carry on into present politics. ani, norton and hoffman were amazing in 25th hour.

aside from the oscar, a good movie that i had initially seen at an international film festival and then recently on dvd is merchant-ivory's "the mystic masseur" based on v.s. naipaul's book by the same name and set in trinidad in the late '40s.

and Hero, a Zhang Yi Mou movie didn't get the Oscar either!!

PREMPUJARI Posted on 25-Mar-03 03:34 AM

Iso, have you seen "Hero"?
The clip they showed on the Academy Awards looks interesting.
Is it something like "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"? A great movie with great Action sequences?? Hint paam bro!!

I got to watch that movie.......!!!!

Has anyone seen "The Recruit", with Al Pacino and Colin Farrell?
One of the recent movies I've really enjoyed.
Pure masala movie with perfect direction by Roger Donaldson.
Fast paced, yet the director never loses his grip from the movie.
Pure time pass -- DON'T THINK, just sit and enjoy the joy ride till it lasts!!!!

Bridget Moyhanan, a model turned actress, is HOT in the movie. ummm ummm...

Iso, have you seen "Hero"?
The clip they showed on the Academy Awards looks interesting.

Actually, I am yet to see that movie. Must be good because Zhang's movies are all excellent. Most of his movies make it to the Oscars nominations..

I am hoping that this one is better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because Zhang's movies tend to get more good reviews than those of Ang Li. You should watch Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese movies, they are good dude. Of course, it will tke you some time to really enjoy those "Asian" movies, but you'll get addicted to those even before you realize.

Anyway, here are my top 5 Asian Picks

1. Roshomon Gate (Japanese)- Akira Kurasawa (this is the first asian movie to win the best foreign movie academy awards)
2. The Road Home (Chinese)- Zhang Yimou (Love Zhang Ziyi? You got to see this movie)
3. The Blue Kite (Chinese)- Tian Zhuangzhuang (a story of a true survivor of various misadventures)
4. Three Seasons (Vietnamese)-Tony Biu (A gripping story: An expat, a girl, streets and connections.. must see, highly reccomended)
5. Harakiri (Japanese)- Ozu (A very good movie. You wouldn't regret watching this one)

hum-ba-ba Posted on 25-Mar-03 02:40 PM

after hearing about it so much, i picked kurosawa's seven samurai a few months back. everyone's said it but i'll say it anyways, it's an absolutely fabulous movie. especially people that are into western action shouldn't miss this at all. since then i have picked a couple of others. "ran" supposedly based on one of shakespeare's plays, takes place in japan where warlords are constantly conspiring against each other. we've seen shakespeare in numerous contexts, and this one's another example. and very recently i watched "dersu uzala" - this one's based on a russian story about a russian captian who's set out to draw topographic maps of the russian forest - and a chinese hunter whom he runs into in the forest. this one's a little different in the sense that we dont see samurai or war stuff. but the story again focuses on honorable human qualities like bravery and friendship. the pace of the movie is incredibly slow though. there are numerous silent pauses, which seems like his trademark, but it's a little too much on this one. will look out for roshomon gate!
bhedo Posted on 25-Mar-03 02:58 PM

My 3 favorite movies of last year were
1. Lord of the Rings
2. Spiderman
3. Adaptation
I just hate musicals. Chicago sucked majorly. I still have to watch The Pianist.

Top 10 movies of all time:
1. A clockwork orange
2. Blue Velvet
3. Vertigo
4. Raging bull
5. Taxidriver
6. Goodfellas
7. 2001: A space Odyssey
8. Casablanca
9. Godfather 2
10. American Beauty

Any movies by Scorcese, Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick are worth watching, IMHO. I'm renting "Dr. Strangelove" the next time I visit blockbuster.
Oh, and I really love movies that depict sadomasochism, decapitation, murder, bondage, and mutilation.
So, Ninth Gate was directed by Roman Polansky huh? A wild ride indeed.

I was pretty ticked that Scorcese didn't receive an oscar. How long must he wait? This is his 6th nomination already! Daniel Day Lewis was awesome in Gangs of New York. I am not very familiar with Adrien Brody's acting, but I guess he deserved it. The guy was pretty eloquent when he spoke; it was an extempore speech.

Michael Moore is the bomb. He's the dude who wrote "Stupid White Men".
hum-ba-ba Posted on 25-Mar-03 09:16 PM

bhedo, what did you think about eyes wide shut?
PremPujari Posted on 26-Mar-03 03:21 AM

Somya, "My Fair Lady" is a classic. Few years ago, American Film Institute came up with the list of "100 Greatest Movies of the century". (You can check out the List here). Back in summer of 2001, I watched as many movies as I could from that list. Thanks to the Hollywood Video, public Library and TV channels. I really enjoyed "My fair Lady". Jhandai Audrey Hepburn maathi dil udhya.. hehe. Actually, I never liked Musicals, until I saw "Singing In The Rain". Dayummm that movie shook me up.

Iso, bro le bhaneko movie hernu hunthyo, but I don't think I can find those movies in regular video stores. Chinese ko Store bata lyaaera heryo, bujhinna, "Kaano goru lai aushi na poorne huncha". hehe. "Hero", I am sure Hollywood Video will carry that. I have a long list of movies to watch. These days, I hardly go to the video store and get the movies. Chat le khattam banaayo :D. But the otherday, I was watching "No Mans Land", the one that won Oscar 2002 in the best foreign film category, and that movie was awesome.

Humbaba, I've watched some of Kurosawa's movies. Thanks to BRAVO channel. LOL. They were great. No wonder he is one of the most respectful directors.

Bhedo, I am still trying to figure out the type of movie I like. I don't even know what kind of music I like, but at least I know it depends upon my mood and the environment. Movies? Well, I don't know. It's probably presentation, performance and the pace of the movie. I disliked Mission Impossible 2, But I bought the DVD and I've watched that movie more than 5 times. It's only because of action, that bike-chase sequence at the end of the moive was mind blowing.

Baaki pachi lekhchu.. .. Saturday!!!
isolated freak Posted on 26-Mar-03 04:58 AM

Actually, all those movies I mentioned are available in your nearset blockbuster or Hollywood videos. Of course, if you have a cinema paradiso in your area, the cnances of getting those + other good movies are even more.

hum-ba-ba, I haven't watched Eyes Wide Shut yet, I will soon, but for the weekend, I am renting Dr. Strangelove(Kubrick), Full Metal Jacket(Kubrick) and The Deer Hunter.

Prempujari, mission impossible 2 wasn't that bad ...action movies, IMO, don't really have replay values, but you probably beg to differ, since you watched it 5 times....anyway, I love movies that aren't formula-based. I enjoyed Minority Report, because it wasn't only about special effects; the plot was indeed very good.

My sis wants me to rent memento. Anybody watched it? Let me know please.
PremPujari Posted on 26-Mar-03 06:24 PM

Bhedo,

Momento is an awesome movie. You'll love it if you don't like the formula-based movies.
It is very much experimental movie, one of a kind. I have never seen any other movie like that. The story moves in a reverse order (just a hint). It's really interesting if you can notice almost each and everything shown in every frame of that movie. for example, the scar on the actor's face, blood stain, the writing on the photographs, the writing on his body, everything makes sense as the movie proceeds.

Don't watch it, if you can not concentrate for 90 mins.
isolated freak Posted on 26-Mar-03 06:35 PM

memento is a good movie but as PP already wrote, you just got to concentrate for 90 mins.

After watching Memento, you might want to see, Ten Things I hate About you.. so that Julia Stiles youthful playfulness, natural face and everyting would make you get over Memento.

Any Julia Stiles fan? She is cute, she is natural.. she is just k bahnne..

Endless!!

I checked it. It's not out in the theater around my area yet. Might have to wait for the DVD/video. :(
(Endless knot re? SLip-knot ko bhai ho?? ehh)

Humbaba -- Finally CITY OF GOD hit the theater, and I heard that it's an awesome movie... tara kyaa bore. They are showin' it only 3:40 PM everyday, and I have class till 3:30 PM. chutyo chutyo!!! DVD wait garnu parne hola tyo pani!!!

Anyway, What's happening with the movies these days?? ehh... especially comedy movies... They are not hilarious anymore. How could they spend so much money in the production of the movie, and can't even come up with any innovative screenplay. Just watched "Bringing down the house" and "Anger Management". I giggled couple of times in both movies but I never had a laughter. kyaa boring.

If my memory serves me well, the last time I really laughed out loud watching a movie was "There is something about Mary". Brilliant script... !!! Waiting for "Dumb and dumberer"... and ARE YOU GUYS READY FOR MATRIX YET???

aaaaaaaaaaaanch!!

fight club comes to my mind. even though,it's not a classic tale like godfather and others in that calibre but F.C is an "interesting" concept that david fincher explored.

Prempujari -- i dont see any conflict there, you always skip the class in those situations ;)
but seriously, this one is worth watching.

GUY Posted on 15-Apr-03 11:23 AM

Memento sucked for me........Ummm I saw it 5 years back!!!!.......Fight club's not among the greatest.........but it has it's sequential script....somewhat similar to Memento. These are weird movies..... Wacko.....huh???
Among the recent movies I have made to are..
The Hunted, Bringing down the House, Tears of the Sun, Basic and " Dial M for Murder".... None of the movies carried the charisma.......Most of these movies had plain old gists.....It's a cliche...!!! Basic was a worth the time....after all it's the American Classic actor...John Travolta!!
New Movies are out in theatres....I'll have to stop by pretty soon..
dangggg Posted on 15-Apr-03 11:28 AM

I_F,
Have you heard about filim industry called "hollywood' they also make some jolly good movies ni.

Next time, watch some angreji movies too.

Ocean's 11

(George Clooney runs into his estranged wife (Julia Roberts) in the casino. The movie tells us that George's wife had deserted him, but it never gives the reason why until the half of the movie. The reason is revealed in the form of conversation between George and Julia.)

Julia: "You are a thief and a liar"
George: "I only lied about being a thief, I don't do it anymore"
Julia: "Steal?"
George: "Lie"

ehhh!! Kyaa coool laagya dialogue ... Bihano uthna paa chaina, tyahi dialogue yaad aai raa!! Kina hola? Probably, because ... It's hot outside and I am still wearing my sweat shirt. Everyone is lookin' at me ... ehh.. and I feel like a biggest dumbass in the Earth!!!

uh uh .. i remember that too. no wonder he steals both julia and money from poor andy garcia by the end of the movie.

hum-bab

what did you think of fight club? was it your kind?

PREMpujari Posted on 17-Apr-03 04:13 AM

Okay Fight Club!!

V_soul!!
The first Rule of fight club: "you do not talk about fight club!!"
The second Rule of fight club: "YOU DO NOT TALK about FIGHT CLUB!!"
shhhhh... hush!! hush!! hehe.

Directed by: David Fincher

Made 5 movies so far (feature). Alien 3, Se7en, The Game, Fight Club and Panic Room. He has proved himself as one of the most innovative directors, whose movies are far from cliche.

I watched fight-club, when it hit the theater for the first time. When I came out of the theater, all I had was high praise for his work. I liked it so much that I went to watch it again next week -- and I watched it many times later on HBO.

One thing I knew for sure : David Fincher was very much confident when he made that movie, that he didn't even hesitate to insert the scenes, which had nothing to do with the movie. (I think those scenes were chopped-off in HBO). Remember, there was one scene in the movie where Brad Pitt and Edward Norton starts teaching us about the technical aspect of the movie-making? Like how does the yellow circle sometime pops up on the screen. There is another instance, where they talk about editing, and another one where they talk about how one can make Soap from Fat(human ehh). Now which director in his right mind -- and who is making such a complex movie, would dare to insert the scenes that has nothing to do with the main plot of the movie? David did, and it worked... Those scenes just flow with the movie. He was very much confident about the movie.

Well, the movie was criticized for gore, violence and sex, and also people were concerned about what kind of message it was trying to give to the society and the youngsters. But thats what some people do -- Worry about things that are not worth worrying about. 4 years ago, when the movie was relased, I was younger than I am today. What message did I get from the movie? Nothing. I watched it, and I liked it, and I praised the work of Brad Pitt and Edward Nortan and the Director, as well as the use of special effects to beautify the presentation. That's it. I didn't go around fist fighting and came back home with my nose broken as a so-called effect of the movie.

Like Roger Ebert said ""Fight Club" is a thrill ride ... Kind of ride where some people puke and others can't wait to get on again". I didn't puke -- I got on it again and again. ;)

Remember this? Tyler (brad pitt) says self improvement is masturbation -- self destruction might be the answer... :)

---PremPujariiiiiii

(Oh yeah, btw.. Watch Bulletproof MONK if you wanna see the best example of WORST DIRECTION... WORST ACTING... WORST DIALOGUE.. LAME STORY, SCREENPLAY,... and the WORST action and FAKE special effects ... duhh!!! Why do I waste my money on such a movie?)

Has "MATRIX" fever grip ya yet??? Just got 1 more month, before it hits the theater... ehh!!!

Talk about the movies... just what I wanted to do... middle of the night when on a deadline... shoot myself!
Anyways Oscar came went... how come no one's seen The Pianist yet? Anyways lemme give a brief review about it meself.... and I thought the movie Rocked! It was amazing... engaging from the very beginning to the end... the only constant character in the movie is Brody... and it is long 2 and 1/2 hrs... You really see why he deserved it!
Well the movie is about ofcourse a pianist... who is the world war II holocaust victim and how he survives... good screenplay, good direction and good acting.. just enough blood and violence :) I loved it! (am not good at giving movie reviews!) but Like PP I am selfish about my opinions!
And another movie... how come no one mentioned 'Red Dragon' for 2002... I mean it didn't get much of anything but it was a fabulous movie... prequel to 'Silence of the Lambs'....this was an amazing thriller... with an amazing cast and acting by everyone... Good performances by Ed Norton, Hopkins and Fiennes!
Anyways gotta get started with mah work... Damnnnnn!
