Kathmandu is under curfew right now. The curfew will go on till 5:30 am Tuesday (Nepal time). Still, there are many people on the streets of Kathmandu, shouting slogans against Paras and his father. For good measure, the crowd is also chanting "girija chor desh chod" naaraa. TO BE CONFIRMED: There have been shoot-outs at Gaushala, Maiti Devi and a few other places. Apparently, four protesters have already been killed today. The crowd is fiercely sympathetic and loyal to the late King Birendra and members of his family. In fact, it's been chanting slogans honoring the late King Birendra. People have set up numerous impromptu small shrines -- with pictures/photos of the Late King and Queen and with incense and flowers -- on most streets. The overwhelming PUBLIC moods are that of: a) Outrage: because the news behind the Friday's massacrre has been so sketchy with the government remaining contradictorily tight-lipped. b) Fury: because Gyanendra and Paras -- and not Dipendra -- are widely thought to be behind the killings. People find it hard to believe that Dipendra actually shot his members of his own family in a bizarre murder-suicide. oohi ashu

A friend just reported by email that his cousin's friend died in his arms at Maiti Devi. Our prayers here are with all 23 million Nepalis right now. God save Nepal, and God save our friends and family.

I think it is natural that a nation goes through a pang of transition, esp when it is doing away with the monarchy. I want peace, but the people who are raising their arm against newly installed king also wants peace, as well as fair justice. Another fact is, KTM is mainly a communist bastion. Esp of moderate communists. KTM never liked Girija and Gyanendra both. Now, in this explosive situation, the only people who could calm the nation/KTM are not in power. It makes it all the more difficult to control the situation.
