Paschim Posted on 26-Jan-03 05:26 AM

In what appears like frank romantic outpourings by a wimpish lover over unrequited love, Kabi Dipak Kumar Khadka seems to be telling a profound political tale.

Are we to see our past 12 years a systemic equivalent of that wimpish fella -- one who would thunder in isolation, did have a "ghaaghdan" prem katha to tell once, but when the need was to start a fire, he couldn't even pretend to smoke?

Maybe, but all my sympathies are still with the wimpish fella who is now mourning that his girl is hanging out with a naami goonda. Revenge perhaps, part punishment, but in the long sweep of romantic/political history, just not fair, and definitely not right. The wimpish fella would have learnt, corrected himself, and redeemed his love with grace. But fret not, the wimpish fella will be back, improved with vigor.

Of course, being hopelessly poetry-poor, I didn't get all the nuances. But still, ghazal buland chha; one doesn't expect anything less from Kabi Nepte (just rhyming with Kabi Dante from Firenze).

Nepe ji...

Vey nice. Nepe ji le aafno kabita post nagare ko pani nikkai bhayo ni ta. Chittai aru aafna pani share garnu huncha hola bhanne asha cha.

Paschim ji le Faiz Ahmed Faiz padnu bha cha? You will enjoy surely enjoy his amazing gazals and other poems which use the words of love but speak of larger things. Here are a couple of translations, not the best ones I have seen translations, but you get the idea:

Before You Came

Before you came,
things were as they should be:
the sky was the dead-end of sight,
the road was just a road, wine merely wine.
Now everything is like my heart,
a color at the edge of blood:
the grey of your absence, the color of poison, of thorns,
the gold when we meet, the season ablaze,
the yellow of autumn, the red of flowers, of flames,
and the black when you cover the earth
with the coal of dead fires.

And the sky, the road, the glass of wine?
The sky is a shirt wet with tears,
the road a vein about to break,
and the glass of wine a mirror in which
the sky, the road, the world keep changing.

Don't leave now that you're here --
Stay. So the world i-nay become like itself again:
so the sky may be the sky,
the road a road,
and the glass of wine not a mirror, just a glass of wine.

Ghazal

Let the breeze pour colors
into the waiting blossoms
unlock the warehouses
where those colors are stored
Oh Love now return
so the promised springtime may finally begin
There is weeping in the prisons
friends say something
just speak
today
if only for the sake of God
let her name pass through a cage
From the corner of your lips
let the dawn begin
at least for once
and let it be fragrant
the night which will descend
when you open your hair
My heart is poor
it needs no reminding
but it holds all the wealth of longing
on hearing your name
I'll always return
once again become the one
to share your sorrow
Whatever the pain
I endured its every moment but
Oh Night of Sorrow you weren't diminished
my tears made sure
you would remain a legend
even in the afterlife
She goes to the office of desires
to see who's still listed
in the ledger of lovers
we are already there waiting
our shirts ripped to threads
in our hands those threads
(proof that we were faithful)
tied stubbornly into knots
After farewell Oh Faiz
nothing could hold you back
nothing at any stop was worthy of desire
from her street you walked
straight to the district of executions
you climbed the steps to the gallows
lost yourself in the hangman's arms.

Surya, many thanks for that recommendation! Will definitely explore more of Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poems. Heard of him, but never read him (poetry never being my forte). Feri Urdu buzhnu parne hola -- tyes ma ta jhoor chhu!

On Dr. Nepe's kabita again: "Naami goonda sanga dekhiyeki aafni thiti" ko allegory gazzab samaya-sapekchhya laagyo -- jata tankaye pani tankine, jasari padkaye ni padkine!
Nepe Posted on 26-Jan-03 10:59 PM

Paschim,

It is always pleasure to read your sharp comments. I do believe you have captured the major nuances of DKji’s ghazal. DK’s own comment was- “Yo haamro nikat atit, vikat vartamaan ra sanketik roop ma sannikat bhavishya upar vaikalpik tippani ho.”

Since it is a vaikalpik comment, a vaikalpik reading of our contemporary history might be necessary to fully appreciate this ghazal. Paschim, your recent comments on GP Koirala’s reflection strongly indicates you are very close to identify and understand what’s going on in the heart of the protagonist of this poem. Like yourself, I too have faith that this ‘wimpish fella’ will make a come back with a new vigor, wisdom and determination- not only to reclaim the lost old love but also not to put her in a constantly vulnerable situation any more.

For this he has to take care of certain business, the most critical of which is to make sure that not just a ‘maageko filingo’ but the whole ‘aago ko bhungro’ is at their disposal. And should I stretch your recent shocking statement, I may think you are thinking what I am thinking you are thinking re kya ajha last ma !

Surya ji,

What a great honor you brought by bringing the poetry of the great progressive Sayar Faiz Ahmed Faiz. I do not pretend I have read all great Urdu poetry, so I know Faiz by his fame than his works except that beautiful ghazal sung by Asha Bhonsle, ‘Yun sajaa chaand ki jhalkaa tere andaaz kaa rang’

Faiz- a sore to the conservative eyes, a confessed terrorist and a Marxist, yet loved by many including Pablo Neruda had amazing talent to use the rich heritage of classic Urdu metaphor and symbolism to make daring comments on contemporary issues and interests with honesty, grace and beauty (something I will highly urge our socalled ‘pragatishil lekhak kabi’ to learn from). Let’s hope our very own DK is our future Faiz.

And on behalf of DK, thanks to my dear old friends PremPujari, Sitara, Biswo, Oys Cihill, Jira and Najar and new friends Vivid, Diwali and StaredLook for your compliments. A great pleasure for myself too.
