King Gyanendra addresses the nation
(Kathmandu, 9:15PM) The newly crowned King Gyanendra addressed the nation in a short speech at 9:00PM local time over state-owned Nepal Television.
In the speech, he announced that a three member committee has been formed to investigate the Friday night carnage in the Royal Palace and bring the facts to the public. The committee is to be chaired by Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyaya. The other two memebers of the committee are to be Tara Nath Ranabhat, the Speaker of the House of Representative (Nepalese Lower House) and Madhav Nepal, the leader of the main opposition CPN(UML).
It is noted that the committee is wholly civilian, with no members from the Nepalese Army or the royal family.
