King Gyanendra addresses the nation (Kathmandu, 9:15PM) The newly crowned King Gyanendra addressed the nation in a short speech at 9:00PM local time over state-owned Nepal Television. In the speech, he announced that a three member committee has been formed to investigate the Friday night carnage in the Royal Palace and bring the facts to the public. The committee is to be chaired by Chief Justice Keshav Prasad Upadhyaya. The other two memebers of the committee are to be Tara Nath Ranabhat, the Speaker of the House of Representative (Nepalese Lower House) and Madhav Nepal, the leader of the main opposition CPN(UML). It is noted that the committee is wholly civilian, with no members from the Nepalese Army or the royal family.

Yes, it's a step. And in a perfect world ruled by honest people, Gyanendra would refuse to name Paras as crown prince, and Girija would resign. He wouldn't have to admit any kind of guilt, just announce that it's clear he's a divisive figure and the country needs calm right now. Same with Gyanendra: he should admit his son is too divisive to play a role in the country. Then the monarchy question should be submitted for general election and a constitutional convention should be called. This is the time to reinvent Nepal. And NOT by going backwards. Meanwhile the Nepali people must no longer be treated like mushrooms. As in the T-shirt slogan, "I am a mushroom. I must be a mushroom. Because they keep me in the dark and feed me bullshit." Nepal needs TRANSPARENCY and HONOR.

I hope the investigation committee will function without any kind of pressure from any one. It would have been nice if they can involve some neutral foreign independent agencies. Mabi

It is a smart move by the new king to form a investigation committee. If the committee confirms Dipendra as the killer then suspecions against him and Paras as conspirators will be cleared. Mabi

Not if the question of Paras remains unaddressed. There will still be suspicions that a dead man is being blamed for something the living also participated in. The Paras question has to be dealt with somehow. Even if the truth is that he didn't participate, he's simply too hated to be left as--god forbid--the crown prince.

Well, credibility is certainly an issue here. However, if the committee can come up with facts, show how they came up with the facts with total transparency, we ought to believe it, no matter how improbable it might be. Having said that, a major hurdle facing the committee is the lack of the bodies since they have already been cremated? How can they perform a post-mortem and conclude scientifically if Deependra was indeed shot at the back, if Deependra indeed could have fired on himself, if he was drunk or he was drugged, etc., etc. without the bodies?? When the most damning evidence is gone, all we may have left might be conflicting "eye-witness" reports. What do we do then? BTW, who decided that the bodies had to be cremated in such a haste? Is it a decision by the privy council or perhaps Gyanendra alone? >Not if the question of Paras remains >unaddressed. There will still be suspicions >that a dead man is being blamed for >something the living also participated in. >The Paras question has to be dealt with >somehow. Even if the truth is that he didn't >participate, he's simply too hated to be >left as--god forbid--the crown prince.

It will be another tragedy if this committee fails to come out with the truth. ARE THREE DAYS ENOUGH FOR THE ENTIRE INVESTIGATION? WHAT ABOUT THE INVESTIGATIVE CAPABILITIES OF THE TEAM? MABI

one step in right direction but will it yield the truth? what if (though very likely) they sum up that it was dipendra who did it while the raw facts are never disclosed? Is there a certain comittee in the world that can intervene on behalf of the peple of Nepal? I am saying this with heavy heart because justice doesnt seem to be served in Nepal specially if it concerns royals who are capable murders concerned nepali Bian

I think we shouldn't be so disenchanted and dismissive toward an independent fact-finding committee. After all, if we are not willing to trust the judgment of a Supreme Court Chief Justice and other elected parliamentarians, then I don't know who else we can trust. I fully expect the committee to find out what happened. Even if there is some kind of hindrance in their investigation, they should come out and say so; and I fully expect that they would. Hari
