Mike’s Breakfast: Do you miss your AMPM/711/Danny’s coffee that helped you finish your senior thesis on time? Do you also miss that 2 AM breakfast at Danny’s which was your food for thoughts when you were writing your senior thesis on “advanced neuropharmacological study on the neuron patterns of white rats”? Do you sometimes miss that awfully bad burrito Mexicano of the cafeteria? And last not the least, do you miss that cereal breakfast which you ate once a year (yeah, the day you woke up at 5 AM totally stressed out..)? If your answer is YES to all, and if you are looking to revive those fun college days, head straight to Mike’s Breakfast in Naxal. Mike’s Breakfast is an upgraded/hip version of your school cafeteria. Here, you don’t have to stand on a long line holding a tray and you can get drunk on Carlseberg/Bagpiper/Royal Stag and if you are really making money in Nepal, Red Label any time of the day.. a perfect place to get your breakfast of the champions—cereals with beer and omelets with whiskey, come on isn’t that what you feel like getting every morning you wake up? There are three different sitting arrangements there. Indoor with a fire place, outdoor in the sun or under a thatched roof and in the garden. And in these different sitting arreangements you see different kinds of people, talking on issues ranging from the Bush administration to bush-men/women of the Kalahari Desert. Now, Talking about people, there are four categories: 1. Expats 2. Nepali professionals usually 40+ 3. Nepali students who studied in the US/Europe 4. Lovebirds 1. Expats: Mike’s is the place for the expats of various countries living legally and illegally, doing legal and illegal things. They come for breakfast, eat and talk stuffs that only they understand. Sometimes, you see people who are involved in various projects in Nepal and their talks over breakfast/lunch or just coffee/beer seem to revolve around Nepal-ko bikas. Another group of expats seem greatly interested in the politics of the region.. and if you happen to over hear their conversation in fluent English with Russian/k . k . k . k accent and when they look suspisioly at you and startr speaking in language that even indra ko bau chandra will have hard time understanding, just change you seat. 2. Nepali Professionals usually 40+. : These people come here in groups, its usually for meetings or an office lunch. And needless to say, their talk revolves around the nation’s politics as well as their work-place’s politics—tyo falanako salo ko bhinaju lai yo pali promotion ma pacharnai parcha./ tyo mantralaya koi sachib lai ni yaha lyayera dui char bottle beer khuayera kaam linu paryo.. bhayena ba..sarai dukha diyo sahi nagari diyera…or asti office bata tyo dance restaurant ma ga.. ket ta kya dhamaka rahecha.. are usually what you hear if you happen to sit next to these people. These people are there to make strategies to gain important power position in their work and talk about their “little” or big adventures after work and 3. Young Nepali Students who studied in the US/Europe: These people come here to escape the “bihe gaar” kach-kach at home, revive wonderful college memories and eat the food that kept them alive for 4-5-6-7 years. The people in this group usually come alone or with a friend who is also a amrika returnee. One interesting thing about the people of this group is: Many of them carry backpacks.. If you come across someone in his mid to late 20’s with a backpack, 90% of the time you can tell that this person just returned to Nepal. The lingua franca of this group is Nenglish (Nepali and English) and these people are often heard making plans to change the face of Nepal by building freeways, opening schools that will be at par with the school they went to and of course about the girl/guy whom they came across at the Rox bar the other night. 4. Lovebirds: Usually 20-25 years. These people come sutukka.. tauko nihurayera and look for the corner most seats..they keep on getting the coffee refills, and French fries seem to be the perfec dating snack..If you happen to sit next to them, you are likely to hear… “asti timi kaha phone garda timro daddy le uthako.. kasto ddar lagera maile ta phone nai rakhe.. gharma caller ID cha ki Chaina” or you get to hear plans to make bring some “fun” in their lives.. filim herna jaane? Hoina nagarkot jau.. hoina daaman jane ki.. These people tend to piss off the waiters by asking for coffee refills.. and don’t be surprised if an over-worked waiter after pouring them coffee for the 8th time murmurs.. parsi iniharoo nagarkot jada yo duitai ko bau/aama/ sara santan le red hand samatera yini harooko yo coffee jastai kalo hune garera puja garun..

These people are there to make strategies to gain important power position in their work and talk about their “little” or big adventures after work and just omit the and at the end of the sentence. read ket ta kya dhamaka= keti ta kya dhamaka (bombshell) read this (last para) : get to hear plans to make bring some “fun” in their lives.. as get to hear plans to bring some "fun" .... there could be other errors too, but hey, if you are reading this means that you ahve time to edit my writing as you read...hoina ta?

Oys, plan gajab cha. Najar, remember you owe me a bottle of San Miguel or Tuborg :) IF, yet another gajhjab ko review. Although I have not been to the one in Naxal, I did have an opportunity to enjoy some good breakfast in Pokhara. In a drizzly morning, I had an early breakfast outdoors gazing at the boats docked by the Phewa. I had a hard time sorting out items that did not include beef and opted for a burrito with eggs, bacon, beans and cheese. It turned out to be the best burrito I have ever had, not to mention sips of wonderfully brewed Ilam tea along with it. IF, tyo Indigo Gallery ko pani khub naam suneko ho. Did you go there as well? If so, how was it?

Chiple sathi, thanks much. yeah, i go to Mike's in Pokhara everytime i go there to get a beer.. wtach Fewa taal and revive some good old memories from Pokhara.. its quiet and nice, so its a perfect place to read, think or remember your good old days over some beer/coffee. Since you wanted to know about Indigo: Indigo gallery, situation inside the premises of Mike's in naxal, is a place to watch some great photographs by nepali and bideshi photographers such as R. bhandari, Ian Baker and Tom Kelly. Also, this place has a nice collection of Thangka paintings by both the newar and tamang artists and sculptors and statues. Although everything they ahve for exhibition and sale are the best you can get in Nepal, so far only two pictures I have seen there made me go WWOWWWO. Both by Tom Kelly and priced between (25000-40000 RS). One was a B& W of two people greeting each other and in the process of greeting, tauko thokkira (k bhancah yallai angreji ma). gajjab thyo that picture, but some dude with money bought it. Another one, which is still there is of a dancer on a cliff. Indigo also organzies various exhibitions, among which include, Tibetan woodwork, Himalayan journeys, Angkor Wat and other themes. Be sure to meet James (the founder of Indigo) to get more information on future events.

Chiple, PP 02= PremPujari 2002. The term priceless in the context of sajha was first coined by Prempujari, Kalankisthan at the time to be precise. So i was giving the credit to where it was due :) lau lau pilaan banaam sabai milera.

Funny story about Mike's Breakfast ... My husband and I used to go to the one in Naxal fairly often for a fix of (relatively) affordable quiche, good fresh iodized salad, and big helpings of pie and ice cream. We left KTM in '97, and about 3 years later were in a Nepali restaurant in the US when, what to our wondering eyes should appear, but ... our Mike's Breakfast waiter! He'd served American food in KTM; now he was serving Nepali food in the US. Definitely goes in the Small World category.
