Hi all,

Sahadev Poudel, brought up and educated in Hetauda, is one of the most promising young theater talents of Nepal.

In the last three years, I have had the good fortune to be one of his friends and
watch his various plays and dramas (both directed by him and also performed by him)
on various stages of Kathmandu, including at Hotel Bajra's annual Spring productions.

Sahadev used to anchor a children's program on Radio Sagarmatha (FM 102.4),
and the program commanded a pretty wide following.

In addition, together with his long-time friend Saroj Aryal, Sahadev was instrumental in getting a REGULAR children's theater going on at Bal Mandir (Naxal) until last year, before he won a scholarship to pursue theater-related workshops at Vassar College
in upstate New York. (In many ways, Vassar is to theater what MIT is to engineering.)

An ambitious, driven young man with talents to match, Sahadev has been in New York City -- the theater capital of the planet -- for some time now, leveraging his Vassar
connections to get to know American professionals involved in theater, honing
his own theater-related techniques, being exposed to the best of American theater
and also introducing Nepal to his friends.

It is in this context that he is going to put on a one-day-long Nepali-language show
in March NYC's WKCR 89.9 FM STATION as a guest-host.

On one level, this may not sound like a lot to some; but keep in mind that Sahadev has been in the US for only 8 months or so.

Those of you in NYC who want to get in touch with Sahadev, you can email him at: theatre@playful.com

Let's wish Sahadev all the best in this NYC radio venture.

On another note, Sahadev, who's in his mid-20s, is committed to improve the theater-scene in Nepal. In fact, he and I both share a dream, which is also shared by Kanak Mani Dixit who has publicly promised to help raise money build a first-rate hall, to have
a vibrant theater scene in Kathmandu . . . Let's see how things go, one thing at a time, as a part of high-trust-based, multi-skilled teamwork.

Kudos to Sahadev for all his efforts and good work. We need to promote art and culture and make things a little interesting from the mundanes of everyday life.

Ashu, NY is one of the greatest theatre towns in the world but I don't know if it's "theatre capital of the world" as many of the big "broadway" productions actually originate in London.

Vassar--70 miles north of New York City, in Poughkeepsie. It was all girls college till 1969.

Dr. No,

You are right.

In recent years, a number of shows have originated from West End and other places around London. But from what I understand, if your show does well, of all the places,
in New York City, by surviving, among others, the criticisms of the New York Times' theater critic, then, you have earned your credentials in theater.

I guess just as future movie stars flock to Los Angeles for auditions, future theater-actors, or for that matter, future sitcom-actors flock to the Big Apple for auditions
that lead to parts, and then on to name, fame and paisa. :-)

That said, let us wish Sahadev well in his pursuit of excellence in theater.

That should be interesting. Ashu do you know the dates? I would love to tune in. Looks like WKCR has an online live broadcaast, so if we knew the time, we could all listen.

Oh, puh leez!!

There are many, many things I don't know anything about.
Marine biology, for example.

That aside, I very well know what an insufferable idiot or a fool I can be on occasions more than I can care to count. Trust me on this.

Fortunatley, I have a few strong-minded friends who'd rather remain my good friends than turn into fans, and, as such, they never hesitate to tell me like it is and bring me down a notch or two and keep me in place. :-)

On a personal note, ever since, as a student, I struggled to come to terms with the powerful arguments made in a book called "Reasons and Persons" by Derek Parfit,
I have learnt to be my own harshest critic. That's what reading too much philosophy
does to one. :-)
