The World Cup Cricket 2003 got underway today with a spectacular opening Ceremony. Newlands cricket ground was surrounded by 4000 performers. The colourful Opening Ceremony is scheduled to last for 2 magnificent hours. 1.4 billion cricket fans around the world are watching the spectacle world wide. I have a hunch that the next few days will produce some of the finest cricket and there is going to be something very unusual when the tournament gets underway with the host playing against the mighty powerful squad of the two times world Champion West Indies in Capetown. What an atmosphere that would be. A total of 54 one day games are scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya over the next thrilling 6 weeks, where host themselves South Africa and the dominant Aussies being the strong favorites to lift the trophy on 23 March. Much of the event build-up has been mired in controversy, with England objecting to playing in Zimbabwe, and New Zealand boycotting their game in Kenya. But fans and organisers alike will hope cricket is allowed to take centre stage on Sunday when South Africa and the West Indies contest the opening game in Cape Town. South Africa and Australia are heavily fancied to dominate their group and with no problem enter the Super Six stage. Most of the best players in the world will be on show, with superstars like Shane Warne, Sachin Tendulkar, Saeed Anwar and Brian Lara recently back from injuries. Co-hosts South Africa are not far behind and veteran stars Allan Donald, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis and captain Shaun Pollock will be quietly confident of home victory. Zimbabwe and Kenya, meanwhile, will just be relieved to get on the pitch and play after weeks of uncertainty surrounding their suitability as co-hosts. My personal favorite Pakistan are best then ever and they will be looking forward to thrashing the Aussies when they take on the favorites in their opening game. It is not a surprise that Aussie Captain Ponting and vice-captain Gilchrist rates Pakistan highly for their unpredictability. With bowling attack the best in the world, spearheaded by Captain Waqar himself and mightily dangerous Wasim Akram and the pace power of the 'Rawalpindi Express' Shoaib Akhtar are all in the peak of their form and when they take on the best batting line up in the World the Australia, its is some encounter and both sides will not go down with a fight. Good Luck to all the nations playing in this beautiful game. So Long everyone, Its Krishna again.. |

It is the Dish Network that has the lone rights to broadcast world cup games in North America. I called them a week back and my..wasn't it expensive. $299 for the whole 54 matches. $250 for super sixes, semifinal and final. $170 for semifinal and final and $75 for the final only. For further info, check out this article, http://www.rediff.com/wc2003/2003/jan/23dish.htm Also please do check out, cricketnext.com. They also have the right to stream world cup matches. It might just be less expensive then Dish Network. Also the article says that Dish network might be showing some matches in the Theatres. But just check out the Dish netwok first and confirm where it is going to be shown. |

Brian Charles Lara sets the World Cup ablaze !!! 116 off 134 balls. To set South Africa a stiff 275, at 5.5 an overs ! First upset of the Cup? Where are you bookmakers. Watch out Tendulkar, Hayden and the Co. Lara's on fire. Would love to hear from those who watched the match live, particularly lara's innings. Followed it over www.rediff.com - which has ball by ball commentary. Did the West Indies slog in the end. Haven't yet checked out websites suggested by Krishna. |

Yes! What a fabolous innings from Brian Charles Lara. The last time he scored a 111 of 94 deliveries against the South Africans in the '96 World Cup, South Africa were back to the dressing room, history repeats itself, doesn't it?? Specially I like the way West Indies paced their runs. Brian Lara pretty much played the anchor roles throughout the innings and with him being in the middle for 3 hours, Windies were sure to post a remarkable target against the host nation. What an upset this would be to pull off for the Carribean side. Chaderpaul, Hooper, Powell, and my favorite Sarwan, all chipped in with good runs for the West Indies and this shows the class they have in the middle order. Speically Powell and Sarwan finished the innings with a blistering thunderblast at the death. Powell finished with 40 of 18 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes) and Sarwan with 32 of 15 (2 fours and 2 sixes), absolutely amazing, Pakistan style finish for the Windies. But hey! don't count your chickens before they are hatches. Mr. Kirsten is there 40 not out and we all know what he is capable of. Kallis signalled his arrival with two magnificent off drive boundaries. So you never know. Lets hope that this cup opener will be just the ingredients a thrlling world cup needs to start off. Krishna, again... |
