This was forwarded to me: All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY. Also, please pass this on to everyone you know. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication. Problems were not found in men, but the FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine. The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine: Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or orange) Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Flu Medicine Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Effervescent Alka Seltzer Plus Night-Time Cold Medicine BC Allergy Sinus Cold Powder BC Sinus Cold Powder Comtrex Flu Therapy & Fever Relief Day & Night Contac 12-Hour Cold Capsules Contac 12 Hour Caplets Coricidin D Cold, Flu & Sinus Dexatrim Caffeine Free Dexatrim Extended Duration Dexatrim Gelcaps Dexatrim Vitamin C/Caffeine Free Dimetapp Cold & Allergy Chewable Tablets Dimetapp Cold & Cough Liqui-Gels Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir Dimetapp Elixir Dimetapp 4 Hour Liquid Gels Dimetapp 4 Hour Tablets Dimetapp 12 Hour Extentabs Tablets Naldecon DX Pediatric Drops Permathene Mega-16 Robitussin CF Tavist-D 12 Hour Relief of Sinus & Nasal Congestion Triaminic DM Cough Relief Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head Triaminic Syrup Cold & Aller! gy Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough . I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children: Orange 3D Cold & Allergy Cherry (Pink) 3D Cold & Cough Berry 3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children, PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF! DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are informed. They can then pass it along to their families. OMG!! are you just telling me that I could have had a stoke and died everytime I took those Dexatrim Extended Duration pills? :) I came across this list some time back and had to decide whether what I was going to do with some of pills that were in my medicine cabinet. I thought safe rather than sorry and chucked the bottles. (though once in a while nowadays I think..."dexatrim?" :) Thanks, Sitara.

Wait a sec, the talk paper is dated 11/6/2000. And the newest paragraph was added on 2/20/2002. I bet all products have already been recalled by now. You got an outdated email.

And to think I almost forwarded it to my workmates. Bah, that would have made me look like an ass.

Eeeh, there are some people out there who like to think of outdated drugs as antiques and like to decorate their medicine cabinets with em, if you know what I mean...so who knows, you doing your "duty" might actually be fruitful.

Ke ko apoplexy ni (by the way I had to double click to get the dictionary meaning hai), kya epileptic seizure jasto ni... shaking and foaming at the mouth. hehe:) Actually those drugs mentioned are still in the market, like dimetaap, triaminic, acutrima nd of course, dexatrim. So I say its not really an outdated email.

Hmmmm. I just checked the medicine cabinet to see if anything contained phenylenapolywhatever, and found an interesting (and scary) thing: All ingredients aren't listed. I thought they HAD to be. Silly me. Anyway, there was a bottle of a Safeway generic cold medicine, and I was figuring I might be safe cuz I never buy the name brands, and everything on that List of Baddies is a name brand. It only listed one "active ingredient" and a couple of "inactive ingredients." And I thought, "Phew. In the clear. Good old generic." But THEN it went on to say, "caution phena-somethings, this product contains flubbadoodle." Or whatever. And flubbadoodle wasn't listed. So it does seem like a safe bet to just stay clear of the listed ones--which seem to be the entire inventory of the typical drugstore kid's section, plus Dexatrim (to keep us flabby mommies both slim and wired?) Cuz until the FDA knows what's up--and it's not making much progress, it seems--there's no way to check labels with assurance :-(

Sally, I think the flabbadoodle,phennacraps...etc. are not listed because of budgetary cuts in FDA labeling by Bush's administration. It was a choice between homecabinet security versus homeland security! Apparently, the researches and the findings do not have fundings to publish coherent information and their impact on medicine cabinet safety. You know, kind of like the "No child left behind" policy where the education budget cut supports "axis of evil" management across the world. Reminds me that the policy assures 100% of the children at/above grade level.....including, special ed. children...hmmmmm interesting! Oh bye the way, I did fine Dimetrapp and Robitussin CF in my cabinet. Gave them a swift burial I did...now I am left with Vicks, Tiger balm and noon-chinny-pani....I feel safer from the impending strokes than the holy war! :(

Aaaanch!!! Alka-seltzer ni parecha!!! The thing is that, when I am suffering from sinus or severe cold, cough and Flu, I don't read the active and inactive ingredients. I just read the "uses", and if it matches the symptoms, I'll buy it and gulp it. At that point, getting relief becomes more important than death or any kind of damgage. Scary Scary Sitara Jyu, It's like a cigarette-hazard public-announcement ni. People have to understand it and follow it, but they don't really wanna do it ni. Anyway, Any chances of supplyin' witches brew (gingered) to the market? I am sure they are hazard free. Unless, witch cast some spell on it!! (Pre-coffee syndrome) Prem Pujari!!!
