Curious to know how hard it is for Nepalis to make friends and keep friendships with Americans. My guess is that most Nepalis stay with Nepalis and exclude others from their circle of friends because they do not know what Americans expect from a friendship. Would anyone like to open a discussion on this topic?

From what I have seen, lot of Nepalis do stick to their own kind. Like many others from other cultures and countries, Nepalis too find comfort and stability in other Nepalis. But obviously the groupism inherent in our culture plays a big role in why some don't venture outside the Nepali community. So I would say it probably is not always the case of "excluding others from their circle of friends." Rather I would say that the issues of opportunity, the lack of inclination or necessisity, and the fear of the unknown are probably the most important reasons. It would be interesting to hear from people about their relationships with American friends, but maybe more so about their relationships with other Nepalis, and especially in group settings. How do people experience and negotiate groupism vs. individualism?

Based on my experience: With OTHERS its friendship without obligations and POLITICS. With Nepalese, its friendship with expectations, obligations, and playing one against the other.
