You would celebrate by taking your priyasi to Ratna Park.

Oh my my! What do I have here!!

If Valentine is "to be celebrated in a very typical and authentic Nepali way, how it should be done? What would be the appropriate Nepali name for it?"

No offense dear light, but this one really knocked me flat. How can you celebrate something in a typical and authentic Nepali way if it is not Nepali to being with? We don't even have a name for it. So there can be no typical Nepali way of doing this...any way you and your special other decide to do the thing is going to be deemed very authentic. As long as you two have a blast, we are all game.

By the way, what you do may also depend on who you are going to do this Santa Valentine thing. If she is an Umrikani or Belayati, she will know all the ropes, you just lay back, relax and she will do all the tricks. Congratulations brother, you are in able hands! But if you are trying to surprise a Gorkheni taruni with this newfangled lob-sob thing, you better watch out! Read on, if the latter case applies...it might be you who ends up with all the suprises while she walks away with the box of truffles!

Many moons ago, I was bitten by the same bug, wanting to do this newy thing with talla ghare thuli kanchi. Gave her a bouquet of roses and box of Belgian chocolates. She smelled the roses and relished the sweets. Then I guided her to the rest of Saint Valentine's 84 commandments. It turned out to be an wonderful evening that stretched long into the night.

So I asked her at the end, "So dear, how do you like our Saint Valentine, isn't it lovely?" She popped the last toffee into her sensous mouth and languidly uttered these words which are still ringing in my ears today:"Aaa, usti usti ho kya! Nepalma pustakari ra titaura le fakaune garchan, yeha chain fool ra chaklet. Natra yesta santa vanta kati gario kati - kahile gothala janda, kahile khetla lagda. Naam matri farak raicha, kaam ta uhi ta ho kyareni!" Talk about cultural relativism.

But let that not deter you, May you all have a swell Valentine special!!

Dear light,
On a serious note, the nearest approximation for Valentine's Day in Nepal would be
a. mela bharne
b. taruni basne
c. rodi dhaune

I think all of the three instances would include a fair amount of singing, dancing and the madal. The rest would be contingent upon how you performed during the dohori. In the case of mela bharne, the aspiring thito is expected to buy some mithai, fanke roti, fruits, and churoos for his sweetheart. In the recent mela I attended, I saw some guys also purchasing new items like coke, biscuits, and chewing gums! It is the globalization thing you know. I went to chat with a bunch of guys who were just puffing cigarrets and eyeing groups of young maidens go by from the side. They all seem to have big a 'LOSER' sign nailed to their foreheads. With a typical sour grapes attitude, one of them told me, "Just as well, who can afford to buy these expensive things anyway?" You are a smart guy, I told him. But from the way he was eying the giggling lasses, I knew he would have cut off a arm and a leg to date a dant fukle ke budhi. Desperation was written all over.

Let us hope we all have better luck than that desperado this Valentine's day and we don't have to resort to such acts of desperation!

Lau jaun Sukrabare Mela!

PPji ko date aaja sahuni ki chori sanga ki blonde sanga ho?
suva chintak Posted on 14-Feb-03 12:08 PM

Congratulations IFji! I gather then that you finally scored big on the dohori contest with Pooji and managed to carry away his sali..oh, what a manly thing to do sir, I am sure Saint Valentine will be most proud of your chivalry. This is the real spirit of Valentine! You are most welcome with your new prize catch. The address is:

Curry n' Kebob
Old Beantown

Dear PP,
No fear of waiter exploitation here sir! I serve the patrons myself, I do a little bit of self-exploitation for esteemed Sajhabasis. Ditto for the lassi, I promise you it will be thicker than the witch's brew. I hope you will give us the opportunity to serve you!

Dear chipledhunga,
I think PP just decided to go out with the other blonde, for reasons cited in my earlier postings. So saauni ki choori is all yours tonight!

Jai Santa Vanta
(the authentic way of saying Jai Saint Valentine)
Dilasha Posted on 14-Feb-03 02:28 PM

Ha ha! suvachintak! that was hilarious! I once went to this Indian restaurant cum grocery store, out of starvation actually. And as I went inside this restaurant where only two people were eating at that time, I tried to locate the host or hostess or whatever they call 'em. Then I saw this kitchen where an old man was cooking something. After noticing me, he came out. "Is there a waiter?" I asked. Then in this typical Indian accent this stout old man in filthy apron answerd back "I yam the waitterr! I yam the cook, I yam the ownnerr." It was so hilarious the way he said it that I couldn't stop giggling. Poor man he must have felt a bit offended. I could imagine how much time it would take for my food to be ready so without ordering anything, I just thanked him and left the place.

So, Suvachintak ji, kahin tapai pani testyai sau ji ta parnu bhayena? Need some more info about Curry n' Kebob then would like to make a reservation for a party of twelve for Saturday night. Could I? :)

cardinal Posted on 14-Feb-03 03:01 PM

"teso bhaye sauni ki chori lai ka lane ta"

I wonder why you all find comments like these funny. To me these all reek of unattended and suffocated male hormones eager to spill out on any possible opportunity.

"managed to carry away his sali..oh, what a manly thing to do sir,"

It would be a shame to Nepalis if nepali men started considering this to be actually a manly thing.

All things might have been said in jest, but appears utterly corrosive and crude to me.
suva chintak Posted on 14-Feb-03 03:32 PM

Mercy, father, for I have sinned!
Vulgarity and crudity is the hallmark of us lay persons, who often deviate from the path of righteousness by giving into temptations of the flesh and mind. Lord, have mercy on our sinful minds and slothful words.

That is why we sinners need the priests and pontiffs to set us straight on the path of god. Cardinal Bernad Law was one such angel who did much to sweep away the crass and the cummy from the Diocese of Sajhapur...Lord bless his soul! He was presecuted, put on the cross, and he resigned for our sins.

Amen!

Dilashaji,
Let me assure you that this is a much reputed establishment that has received regular rave reviews in such magazines as the Boston Globe, Metro, and Spare Change. I wish, but I am not the owner...although I do sometimes double between the kitchen and the wait staff. Just a majoori wala kaamdar (a slight kamchoor as well, as you might have guessed from my postings here). We have the whole Indian menu...from Marathi Samosa to Madrasi Dosa; Muglai keema to Kashmiri raajma. What will be your choice maam? But why on Saturday night, some kind of belated Santa Vanta celebration?
Looking forward to tickling your gastronomical kundalini, with your permission. of course!

(all of this to be read in thick Punjabi accent..)
chipledhunga Posted on 14-Feb-03 04:01 PM

Suva Chintak, no thanks. You can go out with sahuni ki chori :)
Dilasha, good to see you in Sajha again after a long time.
Dilasha Posted on 14-Feb-03 04:30 PM

Ooooh quite an impressive menu Suvachintak ji, although it doesn't make a reason good enough to fly to Boston, I'd love to check it out when I'm there in the future. Hope you don't get a pink slip by then since you claim to be a kaamchor. :) Well, right now, I might just be satisfied wining and dining and dancing in the hip, the hot and the trendy Martini Blu here in the twin cities. For some reason, those "santa vanta" words of yours remind me of being in tarkari bazaar anyways, have a happy santa vanta manta chanta day y'all!! and Chiple dai, thank you!
