For a write-up on Chautari, do click on: http://www.sarai.net/journal/pdf/010-015%20(martin).pdf Personally, these days, though I do NOT get to go to Chautari as much as I used to (thanks to work and more work at the office!), I, for one, remain humbled by the vast amount of Nepal-related gyan/knowledge and information -- not to mention, first-rate social and professional networks -- that I have been able to earn through the goodwill of Chautari. Though there's plenty of room for improvement at Chautari (and you can say that about every institution worth its name), I would urge all of you, if you are in Kathmandu, to be regulars at Chautari, and interact with various speakers by asking them questions, challenging their thoughts or just absorbing vast amounts of information. oohi ashu ktm, nepal |

Ashu, Completely ignorant about your stake in Martin Chautarai, may I suggest one thing? Try to bring Professor Dhruba Kumar of the Center for Nepal and Asian Studies – at the least as a listener - in "Topic: History Writings in Nepal: The Context of Diplomatic History (Nepal - China Relation) and Regional History" He is an authority in Nepal China Relation. One of the best book in Chinese Diplomacy I have read so far is from Dhruba Kumar published circa 1980. |

Noname, I used to be active in Martin Chautari. Now, because of kaam and more kaam at the office and ghar, I do not get to go to Chautari as much as I used to. But having benefited from Chautari in ways more than one, I remain its ardent well-wisher -- publicizing MC in any way I can. And this is the least I can do -- to encourage others to visit MC and to take advantage of the discussion programs/social networks it offers. I know at least three sajha visitors who have attended MC programs after seeing the postings here. As for inviting Dhruba Kumar, that's an excellent suggestion. But if I am not mistaken, he's already given at least two presentations at MC. Still, you are right: He is a formidable authority on matters of Nepali diplomatic history, and it would be great to have him as a speaker again, especally given the recent change of guard in China. So, yes, I will pass your message on to Bhaskar or Seira @ chautari. oohi ashu ktm, nepal BTW, here's a short intro from: http://www.martinchautari.org.np/ Martin Chautari began as an informal, nameless discussion group in 1991, which allowed development professionals and academics to meet every two weeks to share their insights and experiences. In 1995, this discussion group came under the management of Centre for Social Research and Development, adopting the name Martin Chautari, after late Martin Hoftun, one of the founders of the discussion group. Managed in a cooperative style, Chautari began to hold weekly discussions, and to expand its work into research and advocacy, and other activities to enhance the quality of public discourse in Nepal. In 2002 Chautari became a non-government organization in its own right. Today, Chautari's broad goal is to encourage open and high-level dialogue on matters pertaining to the public interest of Nepali citizens. By encouraging public debate and disseminating ideas in ways that are able to influence public opinion and policy, Chautari works to create the kind of democratic space which can house an engaged and vibrant civil society. Chautari currently organizes public discussions, conducts research, launches advocacy projects, publishes books, and intervenes in the pre- and post-publication processes of book publishing in Nepal. Over the years, the organization has gained high public credibility, and has succeeded in networking with a wide community of civic-minded professionals, researchers, students and volunteers through its activities. Despite the organization's growth over the years, Chautari retains an inclusive, cooperative management style, and a voluntary ethic in its core activities. It is poised, today, to expand its work in sharpening the focus of public debate in Nepal through its research and advocacy work. |
