Freak, First of all, you have to ask yourself whether your machine is part of a network or a standalone machine. If your machine is part of a network, such as office or school computer, it is extremely easy for anyone using the same network to break into your machine and read all the contents of the hard drive, modify or even delete it. On the other hand, if your machine is a standalone machine, such as your home computer, it is still possible to break into your machine via internet, but it is rather difficult thing to do, and one must have extensive networking knowledge to do so. (of course, unless, someone is physically logging into your machine while you are away). Your computer becomes much more vulnerable to crackers (not hackers) via internet, especially if you are using file sharing programs such as Kazaa sort of things. With these programs installed, you are literally inviting others to break into your machine. Best way to ensure that you are not giving easy access to others to your machine is not to share anything. In the system root’s, ( C: drive) properties, make sure it is not shared. (assuming you are using windows). If more than one person use this machine, do create a different log in password for different users. If you still feel your word documents are being modified, there IS a way to find out when and who accessed them and precisely at what time. For that, you have to enable AUDITING, But that’s another long chapter…. PS: Creating password protected individual files is security at its lowest. There is always a way to get around it.
