There are more than a dozen Nepali organizations in USA. I have never heard of any constructive work they have been doing. Take, for example, ANMA, ANA, etc. There needs to be a sociological or political driving ideology behind any social organizations which these pathetically lack. Since I came to USA in 1996 I have been attending all these gatherings regularly except one in chicago in 1997. I have never seen a single constructive work or piece of resolution they have undertaken in any of these meetings. These meetings are good only for those who have become US Citizens and have their family raised here. I saw women come to these meetings to show off, to show how nice their Banarasi Saari is and How expensive their diamond neclace is,because they can't show these items somewhere else and guys coming to show off by talking which fortune 500 companies they work and how much they make, which brand of vehicle they drive and how much they have in their 402 K. Boys coming to watch out girls and vice versa. This is more like a matrimonial place rather than a socially motivated place to further any causes related to Nepal and other nepalis living in this country. I have even met nepalis in those meetings who pretend not to speak Nepali but they well speak Newari or Marathi.
And all these community college gradutes who think they are post graduates from some Ivy League schools are the worst turn offs.I have even met someone who call themselves Ph D where as they are in fact Pizza Home Delivery drivers (PhD)

Biratnagare!!!

Come to London then. We have once a month a BADMASS night. www.badmass.com You don't see sari, nor Phd. Just plenty of tipsy Foster bros and Stella Bahinis in mini's and low cuts (Chaubani Cholo with Nepalese navel base in view). It's total hungama......

If you think this is just against nepali culture then I suggest you go to Jogbani and have some chola & samosa.

P.S its a noble virtue to be able to appreciate people with their flaws and eccentricities.

Hyterica Fantastic quip Sir!!!!
kale_ko_chartikala Posted on 19-Feb-03 09:46 AM

Dear Biratnagare:

Well, for a sec, if we all agree on what you are saying... what do you suggest these guys should be doing? Can you suggest what they should be doing instead of just shoing off.

Can you come up with few constructive things they should be doing?

I have attended few of these conferences myself and I meet new people and listen to their ideas. Just one little example is the "Are you new to US" few paged booklet by Bal K. Sharma that might help many newcomers in US. I can give you many more examples.

Criticism is easy - coming up with constructive ideas is not.
Biratnagare Posted on 19-Feb-03 10:44 AM

what are the good stuffs people are doing? I heard in one meeting that they sent a Pagal boy back to Nepal by collecting donations!
We here can press for investments in Nepal, press for the repatriation of Bhutanese refugees, come forward with some suggestions to the Nepali government on how we can curb the corruption, launch a campaign of awareness that people shouldn't vote for those corrupt politicians, put forth our concerns about Nepali Chelibeti being sold in India.
Work as lobbyist organization, run a cooperative! Few Examples of constructive pice of work.
The only concern I have seen in those meetings are if the collections of donation is enough to eat Dal Bhat and Khashi ko masu!...and at the extreme if we have enough to pay for those sadak chaap artists who get to come here from Nepal.
Wahiyaat!!!
najar Posted on 19-Feb-03 10:59 AM

Biratnagare,

As cardinal pointed out perhaps a little research before writing would have helped you!

I have only been to one convention so far, so can't speak for all but a few are doing siginficant work. ANMF for e.g has completed several projects in Nepal and many are underway. For details visit www.anmf.net
Even America born nepali kids are really keen in working towards Nepal. For e.g an America born Nepali friend will be interning at the US Embassy, Nepal this summer. Several others have worked or are planning, both girls/boys. Some come to the covention to share their experience and not just "watch" each other, may be that too, but i would not say that is the ONLY agenda. As for women wearing banarasi saari and jewellery, what is wrong with that? As you mention they don't get to wear it all that often, so they might as well adorn themselves when they arewith their community. I don't think talking about where men "work" is all troublesome either. If they are working for fortune company, why can't we be proud of them or network with them for internship, and job prospects. And was not for the convention people 1974 band would not have come to the US last year. Weren't you glad to go see them, if you did? :)

Even community college degree is a degree, which requires taking classes and fulfiling requirements. Several people choose community college for financial reasons and flexibility in taking classes. Not everybody get tuition reimbursed or get family support toward their education. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with it and those graduates too deserve to have a pride in completing their degree.

just MY thought.

Moral of the story--please do not generalize! :)

Hello Biratnagare,

First of all, I don't believe at all there's any association, any institution, any school, any college, any samajsewa sastha that is run SOLELY FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS!! swayam sewa nabhaikana samaj sewa garna ali garho huncha :)

Yes, I do agree with you on couple of issues you raised on those associations. However, can't we be thankful that at least there are these institutions and forums like SAJHA that is bringing us closer, helping to bridge our differences. At least, we don't have to rue over and over that there's nothing to bring us closer. IF meeting new people, felicitating writers and achievers, promoting Nepali values is not constructive then what is?

Personally, I have not attended any of those conventions nor will any in future. I know there is always drama and politics behind the scenes, however, at the same time, I also know few of those genuine people who are sacrificing their time and resources just to promote nepali values and to bring the nepalis in pardesh closer and do CONStRUCTIVE THINGS!! and i believe it is only on its juvenile stage!

So, all i am asking for --- a lil bit of appreciation:)

btw, 0u812.................badmass nite??? i hear i hear.......tikas katdine ho??? maybe i might get a few lessons on how to strum the guitar right ;) without making it weep!
Biratnagare Posted on 19-Feb-03 01:39 PM

I think sajha has done the most valuable work by bringing together nepalis. I am not against it, not at all.......and I didn't mean to say these nepali organizations must cease to exist. Please be clear on the issues I have had here that there must be an injection of the spirit of novelty and greater good for all the Nepalis living here and everywhere.
I have not had a feel of something unique that would benifit us all in those gatherings I have attended so far, and would be looking forward to joining them in future as well keeping a hope that we will improve their ideologies or causes.

Biratnagare Mitra:

Now you have listed few really constructive idea such as investments, Bhutanese refugees, lobbyist organization, organiztions to suggest to the Nepali government etc (list may go on).

Next step is to follow on them. I have met and known people who devote 100s of their hours every month in such issues through not-for-profit organiaztions. And most of them I met in conf. like these.

Talk about: lobbying organization - there is an nepali organiztion for that purpose. There is another org. which sole goal is to focus and suggest Nepali government in their policies. (How successful they are? that is a different issue)

There might be some badmas people in those organiztions as well, however young people with desire to do something are out there, trying to acheive what they can for Nepal and Nepalese. (If you are interested, and comiitted, contact me and I will introduce to you such energetic youths working in the area you listed)

Now, in my opinion, conferences of ANA and ANMA are opportunities where you can meet such energetic folks and share your ideas. Once in a while, boys and girls can find themselves meeting opposites --so what is wrong with that? Thus, how I view these conferences, is that they provide a meeting platform for "unsatisfied" folks like yourself. That allows you to meet people with similar ideas and then have a group with enough manpower to implement your ideas.

Trust me, these conf. can not change the nation (or issues) itself but the people who attend them can, only if they try to combine their ideas and work together.

Kale dai le chartikala dekhaisyo :), a real kick! :)) allow me to add a line if i may...haamro kale dai's contribution in bringing together a nepali community from all around is well worth a mention, too. He has taken a full responsibility in resurrecting the nepal digest magazine, which now is actively running. Kudos to Kale dai!

Your witty sense of humor has and continue to entertain us in this unique sajha-island! how can we forget your classic sajha slang "re kya ajha last ma" that had reached to almost every poster's posting! I say that you too have contributed immensely in making us appreciate our language, culture, boli, chali and byabhar that we tend to overlook.

And i am sure you will enjoy meeting kale dai should you happen to run into him!
