It’s that time of the year folks when stars twinkle more brightly and constantly; no not the stars up in the sky but the ones that mesmerize us with their razzle dazzle (borrowing from Chicago) performances in the Hollywood hills thus reminding us hey!! It’s OSCAR TIME!! March 23rd is the big night as we all know and I’m all pumped up to watch my favorite stars on the red carpet once again. Not that I am a movie star fanatic but you know once in a while to see stars in real life is indeed a great pleasure, like the time I saw Dustin Hoffman walking on Third Street Promenade and when I called out his name, he waved at me and my friends which was a delightful moment. Anyway, having been bored of seeing the stars in reel life, I was planning to fly to Los Angeles that week especially to see them in real life and was determined to stand on those bleachers they put outside the huge Kodak theater on the D-day but later I was disappointed to hear the news that this year they’re going to limit the no. of fans and have drawings only for the ones who fill out application forms. What a pain! Do I have to go through so much trouble to see a goddamn Hollywood star? Heck no! Or so I thought. :) That just put me off. Hence, I decided that like every year, this time too I would rather sit at home and watch the event on my 65” color television with my friends over some popcorn and pepsi. And believe me I’d rather stand those stupid Miller-lite ads like the one where those two girls are having a catfight in the pool, and the voiceover guy says, “life is best told over a miller lite” or something like that, than standing in the scorching sun outside Kodak. :) Alright enough of my rambling…let me get to the point. I’m sure all the movie buffs know who the nominees are especially in the main categories. So, who do you think will take home the OSCARS this year? This thread is for YOU to pour out your predictions. List your prediction along with who you prefer to win cuz sometimes you kinda feel that who you want to win will not and someone else will. So, here’s mine to begin with. BEST ACTOR (Leading) Prediction: Jack Nicholson I prefer: Daniel Day Lewis (I’ll be helluva disappointed if this brilliant outstanding performance doesn’t fetch the oscar!!) BEST ACTOR (Supporting) Prediction: Haven’t seen the other performances besides Reily and Ed Harris hence I would prefer Harris for this category for his wonderful performance of a depressed writer suffering from Aids. Terrific acting! BEST ACTRESS (Leading) Prediction: Nicole Kidman I prefer: Of course Nicole Kidman! Although I loved Renee Zellwegger’s performance in Chicago, I have a feeling that Nicole will take home the award this time. I haven’t watched Far from Heaven, but people say that Julianne Moore is very good in it and so is Salma Hayek with her portrayel in Frida, whichever way it goes, I personally want Nicole to fetch it. BEST ACTRESS (Supporting) Prediction: Meryl Streep Who I prefer: I think it’ll be a neck to neck comp between Streep and Julianne Moore. I haven’t seen Adaptation but I know she fetched the Golden Globe hence I would guess it will be Streep. BEST DIRECTOR Prediction: Martin Scorsese Who I prefer: Rob Marshall for Chicago. Needless to say that Scorsese is a phenomenal director and he’s just a legendary director and it shows through his GONY that he’s put his heart and soul into it which is a very well made movie but deep down I felt that there’s something missing in it. I don’t know and haven’t been able to find out what it is but there is something lacking in that movie. Whereas Chicago stole my heart! From the beginning till the end, I was so captivated by this musical that I sat through the credits after the ending to see who this genius director is and found out that it was Rob Marshall who not only directed it but also choreographed every dance item. I’m not a huge musical fan but I tell ya, this movie is something different. Even after you leave the theater, the songs and the dance numbers will have a haunting effect on you. BEST PICTURE Prediction: This is a tie for me: Chicago or The Hours Who I prefer: Of course Chicago! For those who haven’t watched the movie, you’ll find out after you do, why I’m hell-bent on this movie. BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY Prediction: Gangs of New York BEST MUSIC (Song) Prediction: Bono and his gang for Gangs of New York Alright, that’s it from me. You can add more categories if you like. Btw, has anyone watched Roman Polanski’s The Pianist? I wonder how it is for it’s been nominated for quite a few categories. |

Dilasha, Nice angle on each category. Liked it. Howz your reporting career going? If I remember it right, u wanted to be involved in Television industry. I remembered from Last year's Sajha awards. I agree with must of your categories except one. Best MUSIC (soundtrack): Nickel Back for Spider man. They are a shoe in. Nicole and Rene were both nominated earlier but never won. Both are viable candidates. Keep it up. |

Heh, who cares about Oscar right now? Grammy is the shitt right now. Talk about Grammy, not Oscar. To put it bluntly, your prediction is a tad early. |

Hmmm....I guess you're right Bhedo ji...seems a bit early to talk about the Oscars and I totally forgot about the Grammmys! Not that I am a die hard fan, in fact I've never watched those, but I guess I'll have to since Czar and I had a discussion about who else but Norah Jones sometime back in some other thread. Ani Czar, did we have some bet on her? :) kya ho khai ta Oscar prediction! same goes with Prem Pujari ji too. I thought you guys were experts like those Roger and Ebert (i'm sorry i think one of em passed away). And thanks DWI. Just an FYI-Spiderman's not nominated and the best music category has two parts: SONG and SCORE and I think Bono will fetch the SONG award for his melodious song "the hands that built America". |

Dilasha jyu, Nice Observation. I have already posted my prediction in the thread Let's talk about Movies. You must have missed it. :D Here are my predictions! BEST MOVIE: will win: Chicago Should win: Gangs of NY (No I didn't like the movie, It's not the kind of the movie I expected from Mr. Martin Scorsese. This movie lacks Mr. Scorsese's Touch. P'bly he should stick to simple movies like Taxi Driver, NewYork NewYork, Goodfellas, Raging Bull etc. But, despite making so many great movies, his movies had never own best picture catagory once. I won't be surprised if it wins, due to the emotions attached to NewYork and 9/11.) BEST DIRECTOR: will win: Either Roman Polanski or Martin Scorsese. should win: Martin Scorsese. (I think its about time Oscars recognised his talent. So many classic movies, and no Oscars, unbelievable. ) BEST ACTOR: Might Win: Jack Nicholson. (Might win, because he has already won for "as good as it gets" and " one flew over...". If he wins, he will be the first actor to win more than two times in the BEST ACTOR catagory, and I hope Oscars avoid that. I think he hardly acted in that movie, he did nothing more than what he did in "as good as it gets".) Should win: Daniel Day-lewis or Nicolas Cage. Daniel Day was awesome in GONY, But can't neglect superb performance by Nicolas Cage in "Adaptation". The best thing about his role in Adaptation is, Nicholas Cage plays a character of Twins. Both of them appear at the same time on the screen. Both have same looks. But through out the movie, one can identify one Nicolas Cage from the other. It is really hard to handle such a role, and Nicolas handles it perfectly. The only minus point for Nicolas is, he is the least liked person in the 2002.) BEST ACTRESS: Renee Zellweger Or Nichole Kidman. Nichole has good chance. Should win: Diane Lane for "unfaithful". She was awesome in the movie. Aru lekhnai alchi laagyo. Got some homeworks. I'll write later... :D I've already written my views on "Let's talk about the movies", you might wanna check it out. About being as expert as Mr. Roger Ebert, there is no one as brilliant as him, who dissects the movie superbly. I love to read his reviews. I am not a review writer, Don't even know how to write nicely. It's only my views, I spit to make myself happy after spending hard earned $9 per movie. Thanks. PS. It's great if BONO wins for GONY, Always been a fan of U2. But, it's great to see Eminem made the list. :D |

Duyaaamn!!! Wrote for one hour, and I posted it, and it showed some error and I lost everything I wrote. Kyaa bore bho!!! Anyway I've already written my predictions on Let's talk about movies thread. You might wanna check it out. About Mr Roger Ebert. He is a genius, I wish I could write better. I love reading his Reviews. (Roger Ebert is one person. I think you are talking about Roger and siskel or something. Siskel died.) I am not an expert. It's only that, I found Sajha as a good platrom to spit my views after wasting my hard earned nine bucks. I don't give a damn if anyone reads it or not (Sorry if I sound rude) About BONO, He should win, he will win. Being a fan of U2, can't say anything more than that. It's awesome to see Eminem made the list. |

Oh, then it must be in Grammy's.... The Hero by Nickelback. For grammy: Best new Artist: Avril Lavigne (not Norah Jones) I wish 50 cents had released his album earlier for a consideration in Best Hip Hop category. |

Dang. Dilasha was right. The reason I took Avril over Norah is coz she has more hit(Sk8er boy, I'm with you, Complicated) than Norah. Tell me are other songs on the record are good as well (as Don't know why). I think, her being the daughter of Ravi SHanker had something to do with it. Do u? Hard to appreciate Jazz as not a big fan, like Dilasha. |

Oh c'mon DWI, now pls don't come up with such lame reasons for her fetching the award! She deserved it man! what are you saying? being a daughter of Ravi Shankar had nothing to do with it. It's an absolutely incredible album for a "debudante". Listen to her songs when you're on a long drive, it's really soothing. Besides "don't know why" I like "cold cold heart", "feeling the same way", "got to see you again" and "7 years" anyway It was fun to watch her win alll those awards, she deserved it. :) |

Dilasha, for real? That's what I wanted to know actually, if her other songs are as good as Don't know why. But knowing she was an estranged daughter of Ravi Shanker does add some mystic, u gotta agree. I am taking your words and trying her CD out. Lets see if I will love Jazz as whole (Is she a mainstrem Jazz?). Till then I am still Alternate, go Coldplay!!! |
