Asmita KC studies in class four at Lotus Academic School, Pokhara. She has exceptional insight for a 10-year-old. You might be wondering why we are reading about her. She is also quite adept at dealing with things with relative ease which most girls her age might find rather difficult. Such qualities eventually impressed the judges who gave all vital points in Asmita’s favour and she was no more an ordinary kid -- she was crowned 'Miss Kid Queen Pokhara-2003'.

“After being selected in the top three from 32 contestants, we were all eager to know the name of the winner in the last and final round. And I was, for a moment, left speechless, when the panel of judges announced my name. I was so happy that I did not know when tears began to roll from my eyes. And for a fleeting of moment, I could not see anything clearly because my eyes were blurred with tears,” recalls Asmita.

Her parents, Jagat KC and Bandana KC, were no less happy, although they seem rather complacent, saying they were sure about their daughter’s success. “We are proud of our daughter. We must say about Asmita that she has been doing well ever since her childhood. She is endowed with some very rare qualities,” share the couple with a broad smile on their faces.

Asmita now aspires to win the title of Miss Kid Queen Nepal, which is scheduled to be held in Kathmandu in the near future. “Besides that, I also want to be a doctor some day; so I can serve people who are discarded by many other commercial doctors for whom money matters more than a patient’s life,” says Asmita emphatically.

If asked to make a choice between the life of a bird or a girl if reborn, which one will she choose? “I would like to be born as a girl in my next life, because I would like to do those works which I could not fulfil in my previous birth.” This was the most fitting answer that impressed the judges.

About the Miss Kid Queen Contest, Asmita says, “Organising contests like this is very good because it provides an opportunity to those promising girls who have lot of hidden talent but are simply unable to show it due to lack of a platform.”

Besides course studies, Asmita is interested in reading storybooks and newspapers. Her best newspaper, in her own words, “is The Himalayan Times and that too Variety section”.

“I am an avid reader of newspaper and story books along with my course books. My best newspaper is The Himalayan Times. I like Variety page very much as it covers a wide range of subjects; but I would like to suggest addition of more funny reading materials for children like us.”

Asmita is a sort of girl who does not want to waste her time. She has joined SSI Computer Academy in Pokhara where she takes higher course in computer science. "English and computers are the most essential part of our life. Every girl must be equipped with the knowledge of computers and English, so that no man cannot dominate them in future," there is a sense of pride in her voice.

One of the members of the organising committee of the contest shares, “So far we have organised Miss Kid Queen in Pokhara, Dharan, Kathmandu, Biratnagar and Hetauda. Now we have planned to organise a grand competition among these winners and runners-up for the title Miss Kid Queen Nepal-2003 in Kathmandu. Young girls aged between 10-14 were allowed to participate in the contest. Although participation was open to all interested girls, most of the boarding schools came forward to join the contest in Pokhara.”

Karna Gurung, founder principal of Lotus Academic School, seems satisfied and relaxed with his student’s success. “I was rather sceptical about the contest at first. I opposed it outright when the organisers first approached me; but it was Mahendra Gurung, principal of Doon Academic School, who convinced me to have a positive outlook about the event. Later I was very happy when I saw the contest, which was, in true sense, a real platform to encourage talented students.”

Although Pokhara Jaycees has been annually organising Miss Pokhara -- a beauty pageant, for the past couple of years, Miss Kid Queen Pokhara was entirely new. The message of Miss Kid Queen is obvious, “Beauty is not skin deep, you also need brains to be really beautiful.”
